Abstract: Despite the important effort of knowing the Ophiuroidea diversity in the Mexican Pacific, some mis- takes in the taxonomic nomenclature have pervaded through time. In order to clarify the latter, a checklist based on literature review of brittle stars from the Mexican Pacific is provided. We reviewed a total of 105 references that in total summarized 125 species of brittle stars from the Mexican Pacific (112) and the Gulf of California (97), belonging to two orders, 16 families and 50 genera. These records are higher than those reported on previ- ous studies carried out in the area. -

MacGinitie in the vicinity of Point Barrow, Alaska. His work on the invertebrates of the region (see G. E. MacGinitie, 1955j was spon- sored by contracts (N6-0NR 243-16) between the OfRce of Naval Research and the California Institute of Technology (1948) and The Johns Hopkins L^niversity (1949-1950). The writer, who served as research associate under this project, spent the. periods from July 10 to Oct. 10, 1948, and from June 1949 to August 1950 at the Arctic Research Laboratory, which is located at Point Barrow base at ap- proximately long. 156°41' W. and lat. 71°20' N. As the northernmost point in Alaska, and representing as it does a point about midway between the waters of northwest Greenland and the Kara Sea, where collections of polar fauna have been made. Point Barrow should be of particular interest to students of Arctic forms. Hemichordates possess several important morphological structures in common with chordates, and they have been fixtures in hypotheses on chordate origins for over 100 years. However, current evidence points to a sister relationship between echinoderms and hemichordates, indicating that these chordate-like features were likely present in the last common ancestor of these groups. Therefore, Hemichordata should be highly informative for studying deuterostome character evolution. Despite their importance for understanding the evolution of chordate-like morphological and developmental features, relationships within hemichordates have been poorly studied. At present, Hemichordata is divided into two classes, the solitary, free-living enteropneust worms, and the colonial, tube- dwelling Pterobranchia. The objective of this dissertation is to elucidate the evolutionary relationships of Hemichordata using multiple datasets. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to Hemichordata and outlines the objectives for the dissertation research. Chapter 2 presents a molecular phylogeny of hemichordates based on nuclear ribosomal 18S rDNA and two mitochondrial genes. In this chapter, we suggest that deep-sea family Saxipendiidae is nested within Harrimaniidae, and Torquaratoridae is affiliated with Ptychoderidae. -

Box 9370, Stn B, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada A1A 2Y3 Abstract A review of the existing literature on marine benthic molluscs (Amphineura, Bivalvia, Gastropoda) in the Newfoundland-Labrador region indicated that at least 158 species, representing 69 fami lies, have been referenced in reports of scientific investigations. Less than one-third of these reports have appeared in the primary literature, while the remainder exist as manuscript reports and university theses. Several species (e.g. Mytilus edulis and Placopecten magellanicus) have been studied intensively, but most species have received only very cursory attention. Specific inventories of molluscs are rare. Most zoo benthic surveys which include molluscs fall into one of three categories: fisheries-related investigations, resource assessment studies, and environmental impact studies. Additionally, the literature contain numerous academic (university) studies. Analysis of the geographic distribution of research effort indicated that most of the work was concentrated in southeastern Newfoundland (Avalon Peninsula) in proximity to the major institutions at SI. G.Atkinson Arctic Biological Station, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, 555 St. Pierre Boulevard, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec H9X 3R4,Canada ABSTRACT: Calonc values were determined for 121 species of cold-water benthic invertebrates, 109 of which are representative of a soft bottom community in Frobisher Bay, Northwest Territories (Canada). The mean calonc value for the community was 5.424 kcal g-' ash-free dry weight (SD f 0.403). This is not significantly different from values from lower latitudes, as has been suggested for planktonic communities. With one exception, the Ascidiacea, there were no significant differences in mean caloric value among major taxa. The lnterspecific distnbution of AFDW caloric value is discussed; present data support the growlng evidence that the natural pattern is symmetrical with values concentrated about a mean of 5.4 to 5.7 kcal g-' AFDW for benthic invertebrates. Caloric equivalents for biomass estimates and large-scale community comparisons may be derived from the regression of dry weight caloric value on percent organic content (dry weight): Y (kcal g-' AFDW) = -0.3897 + 0.0605 X (% organic content). when the organic fraction is determined directly. They were identified as Gorgonocephalus eucnemis (Müller & Troschel, 1842), belonging to family Gorgonocephalidae of order Euryalida, which was new to the Korean fauna. Their molecular analyses were done with newly intended COI primers of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene for the accurate molecular identification. The Korean G. eucnemis was coincident with this NCBI species as a result of Blast analysis, which showed the 99% similarity. In the current study, three Gorgonocephalus species have been report- ed from Korea.
