The Documentary Handbook
The Documentary Handbook The Documentary Handbook takes a thematic approach to documentary, including chapters on the many myriad forms we watch today – from the cinematic releases of Michael Moore to low-budget internet efforts like Video Nation, from ‘shock docs’ to reality television. The Documentary Handbook is a critical introduction to the documentary film, its theory and changing practices. The book charts the evolution of the documentary from screen art to core television genre, its metamorphosis into many different types of factual TV programmes and its current emergence in forms of new media. It analyses those pathways and the transformation of means of production through economic, technical and editorial changes. Departamento de Comunicação Social TELEVISÃO E REPRESENTAÇÕES DO CONSUMO: REALITY SHOWS E PRODUÇÃO DA SUBJETIVIDADE NA CULTURA CONTEMPORÂNEA Aluno: Patrícia Schwingel Dias Orientador: Everardo Rocha Introdução Este estudo procura analisar uma nova tendência de programas de televisão transmitidos nos canais abertos e fechados - os reality shows, programas que enfocam a vida real. A análise desses programas nos mostra a influência que eles procuram exercer nos processos de produção e de transformação da subjetividade na cultura contemporânea. Partindo da pressuposição de que os indivíduos só podem ser felizes e realizados quando se enquadram em modelos predeterminados e idealizados pela mídia, esses programas pretendem oferecer ao telespectador a oportunidade de assistir a alguém procurando ter um corpo perfeito, uma casa bem decorada, as melhores roupas, um rosto mais bonito e um comportamento condizente com o que é socialmente desejado, ou ter ele mesmo tudo isso. Para tanto, os participantes passam por inúmeras transformações, desde a simples reforma do guarda-roupa até a radical intervenção proporcionada por uma cirurgia plástica no rosto e no corpo, passando por lições de comportamento, remodelação da casa ou modelagem do corpo através de regimes, exercícios e emagrecimentos. Todos esses esforços de transformação da subjetividade visam a atingir um modelo estético idealizado pela mídia e capaz de satisfazer o desejo do participante, da produção do programa e do telespectador. É perceptível uma nova tendência mundial nas televisões aberta e paga de dar mais espaço a esses programas que enfocam a vida real. Esse estilo teve um de seus pontos altos com o sucesso do reality show Big Brother , que em pouco tempo já tinha diversas edições em mais de 30 países, entre eles o Brasil. -

The research included an examination of the shift to self-legitimation, the increased importance of reflexivity and the decline of class proposed by the individualisation thesis.2 We focused on self-transformation “reality” television programmes as public examples of the dramatisation of individualisation. The over-recruitment of different types of working-class participants to these shows and the positioning of many in need of transformation, enabled an exploration of how certain people and cultures are positioned, evaluated and interpreted as inadequate, deficient and requiring improvement. -
