ALTERED STATES OF PERFORMANCE: SCORDATURA IN THE CLASSICAL GUITAR REPERTOIRE by COREY JAMES FLOWERS (Under the Direction of Michael Heald) ABSTRACT Scordatura is commonplace in the guitar repertoire, though there are relatively few resources available that explain the approach to its use, either from a performer’s or a composer’s perspective. Through examination of specific selections in the classical guitar repertoire, this document offers an introduction to various alternate tunings for the guitar, beginning with tunings used to transcribe lute and vihuela music, and progressing to modern experimentations found in the literature. Each piece on the accompanying recording provides insight into the use of these alternate tunings by highlighting specific musical characteristics that are made possible, or are idiomatic, in each tuning, such as extended ranges, open string relationships, unique chord voicings, and the ease of introducing contrasting tonal centers across a program. The CD provides a basis for aural comparison of the tunings and is a resource for performers interested in this repertoire. It also provides examples for composers and arrangers wishing to approach writing for the guitar using non-standard tunings. As additional resources, a glossary of terminology is provided, concerning tunings found in the document, as well as tunings used outside of the classical repertoire that may be useful for experimentation. An index of scordatura repertoire is provided as well, offering a broad overview of additional repertoire for further

Guitar tunings Guitar tunings assign pitches to the open strings of guitars, including acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and classical guitars. Tunings are described by the particular pitches denoted by notes in Western music. By convention, the notes are ordered from lowest-pitched string (i.e., the deepest bass note) to highest-pitched (thickest string to thinnest).[1] Standard tuning defines the string pitches as E, A, D, G, B, and E, from lowest (low E2) to highest (high E4). • Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner
Setting Guitar Intonation Using Your Peterson Tuner Before you attempt to tune any stringed instrument, the intonation should be checked and, if necessary, adjusted to the correct position. If you’ve never used a Peterson tuner before, then it is almost certain that your instrument is not yet correctly intonated and will not sound its best until you address it. Now that you have a Peterson, you can achieve professional quality results with the help of the tips below, and the intonation will be the best it can be on your instrument. You’ll need your Peterson tuner, a short guitar cord, a small screwdriver and a set of new strings. Before starting, find a surface upon which to lay your guitar that is free of any objects which could damage your instrument and cover it with a towel or similar soft material. Remember to tune the guitar in the position in which you would normally play it (i.e. around your neck, supported by a strap), but adjust the bridge of the guitar after laying it on a flat surface. If you tune the guitar while it’s laying flat, gravity will affect the tension of the neck and skew the results. If you adjust the bridge while the guitar is hanging from a strap on your shoulder, there is a risk that the guitar’s finish will be damaged by the screwdriver. If possible, take the opportunity to clean the fingerboard after the old strings have been removed. New strings will stay clean and sound good a lot longer if the fingerboard is free of grime and dirt.

Mark Simon's Terraplane Resonator Guitars (index.html) Good Vibrations How Sweet e Sound! Mark Simon and the Terraplane resonator guitar. One hundred years ago, in 1916, the Martin Guitar Company manufactured a new model called a Dreadnought. e most o vious characteristic of the Dreadnought"to this day the most popular acoustic guitar style in America"was its larger ody si$e, meant to help players in their e%orts to e heard amidst the rass and percussive instruments that made up many popular ensem les of the day. Later, in the 1920s, a violin repairman named )ohn Dopyera addressed the pro lem in a di%erent way when he made the *rst resonator guitar for George Beauchamp, a ,audeville lap steel guitar player from Te.as. Rather than rely on the instrument0s wooden top and ody to amplify the sound waves from the strings, Dopyera devised aluminum cones that received the string vi rations through a variety of com inations and con*gurations, producing a sound much louder and righter than that of a traditional acoustic guitar. Dopyera and Beauchamp egan manufacturing tri1cone, metal1 odied 2ational Steel guitars in Los Angeles in 1927. A year later, Dopyera le5 to form his own company with his rothers, naming it Dobro Manufacturing, producing a single, larger resonator cone that sat inverted under a perforated metal cover plate. e Dopyera rothers were a le to eventually com ine oth 2ational and Dobro into one company, while Beauchamp, himself no slouch when it came to innovation, went on to achieve supreme audi ility y developing the *rst electric guitars.
