Pros: The main narrative is interesting and gets even more interesting as it progresses. The writing is smart and makes the characters even better. The entire volume is an important piece of Marvel history. The artwork looks good and suits the story well. This volume tells an awesome story, centers around a great villain, and has some solid artwork to back it all up. Plus, it refines Marvel Comics in Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos way that goes on to have a huge impact on stories from this point forward. Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanosby , is an awesome collection that has a lot of positives going for it. The story is immediately captivating and stays this way as the narrative becomes more and more intense. Thanos ends Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos being a perfect villain for the volume and the evolution he undergoes here is excellent. There are some weird pieces of the story that might not appeal to everyone but even these are charming in their own way. Overall, this is a great book that works in plenty of different ways. After being defeated in the past, Thanos is brought back to life by Death itself, who grants him more power and tasks him with eliminating half of all life in the universe. He is Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos by the Silver Surfer, who is foretold to be the only being able to stop Thanos in his plans. First, it pits him against the Silver Surfer in a few well thought-out encounters. Thanos proves that he is not just more powerful than the Surfer, he is also more clever. By the end of their battle, Thanos has made progress in his plans and faked his own death, thus throwing the Surfer off his trail. Later on, this trend continues as Thanos is pitted against the Elders of the Universe. Each encounter with an Elder is tense and has Thanos use a different method to defeat his foe. In general, this entire collection does a fantastic job in setting up Thanos as an awesome villain and managing to entertain Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos doing so. Another aspect of this volume that really ups its appeal is the historical importance of what happens within this collection. This collection contains the third major appearance of Thanos and starts him on a road that will quickly lead to the Infinity Gauntlet event. It also refines Thanos as a character, deepening his connection to the personification of death and introducing a concern for the overpopulation of the universe. Meanwhile, the Soul Gems are turned into the Infinity Gems and are modernized in a way that will have a massive impact on the Marvel Universe from this point forward. Seeing all this evolution was a treat for me and will likely be a treat for anyone else with an interest in Marvel history. The only contentious part of the collection comes from some of the more out-there chapters. The artwork in Rebirth of Thanos is a great complement to the story being Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos here. They allow the heroes to look powerful, the villains to look intimidating, and the depths of space to look strange and Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos. The pages throughout this volume have varied and unique panels that look different throughout the volume. In some places, a lot of panels are used in quick succession to show an emotional change or convey a lot of information; in other places, a much larger spread is used to highlight an important moment. All in all, the visuals in this collection add to the reading experience and suit the story being told. All Silver Surfer Reviews. Next Volume Review. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Even non-comic book readers will associate the Mad Titan with his iconic Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanosthanks to the MCU's adaptation of the comic book epic. The Mad Titan constructed a synthetic soul stone which he used in an attempt to extinguish the stars. Warlock was physically killed by Thanos, but his essence remained trapped within the stone. Bursting with cosmic energy, Warlock turned Thanos to stone. Although the Mad Titan worshipped Death, Warlock made it so that part of Thanos' consciousness remained trapped within his stone form, denying him a true death. This resurrection was performed by Mistress Death, the very object of Thanos' desire. Additionally, Death significantly increased the Mad Titan's power levels, since she would need him for her Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos goals. Indeed, Death resurrected Thanos in order to help her correct an "imbalance" in the universe. Since there were more people currently alive than dead, Thanos was tasked with wiping out half of all life. Specifically, Death tells Thanos that the only one currently standing in his way is the Silver Surfer. She's correct here, as much of the storyline focuses on the Surfer's preparation to confront Thanos. The Mad Titan initially approaches the Surfer and attempts to Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos the Sentinel of the Spaceways to join him in his mission. Ultimately, Thanos fails to convince the Surfer, although he is able to toy with the hero quite easily. For example, at the end of the storyline, Thanos manages to fake his own death quite convincingly. The Mad Titan leaves behind a body that is similar enough to his own so that the Surfer believes he Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos beaten Thanos. Finally able to continue his quest undisturbed, Thanos proceeds on a mission to find all six of the infinity gems. Still, there is plenty of crucial build-up to this incredible story, which unfortunately goes unnoticed. Nabeel Gaber is a longtime reader of a plethora Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos comic books. Death has determined that the universe is becoming Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos, possibly leading to total extinction, and charges Thanos with killing half of its inhabitants as a culling measure. Naturally, the Surfer opposes this plan. Eventually, Thanos creates the Infinity Gauntlet out of the stolen Infinity Gems and prepares to begin the culling. A useful lead-in to Infinity Gauntlet, showing some background on the return of Thanos, his new mission, the full story of his acquisition of the Gems from their guardians, and some of the characters featured in the next part of the story. Considering most of the background provided feels essential, it seems like it should have been a part of the Infinity Gauntlet miniseries. Catching up with the Surfer was entertaining and encounters with the Impossible Man and Drax the Destroyer provided a little levity in the Surfer's quest. View all 4 comments. I wish I had re read this before reading The Infinity Gauntlet. This is, after all, the direct prologue. In the pages of Silver Surfer, Thanos is resurrected. Then, in a story originally published as the two part Thanos Quest, he goes on a mission to collect all six infinity gems. I am convinced that I read Thanos Quest Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos. I really liked it then, and I liked it every bit as much now. It's narrated by Thanos, a job I think few writers could pull off. How to make him just over-the-top enough I wish I had re read this before reading The Infinity Gauntlet. How to make him just over-the-top enough to be amusing, without lapsing into Dr. Evil territory? It's a tough balance, but he manages it. He's very good at that. Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos also good Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos giving a truly cosmic feel to his stories. A fitting prelude to Infinity Gauntlet, which is one of the better crossover storylines from any company. Sep 21, Anthony rated it really liked it Shelves: digital. I read this on the iPad. I really enjoyed it. Ron Lims art holds up really well and Stalin writes a good Silver Surfer. Aug 20, Tiago rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novelsmarvel-space. All the issues were really fun, with the story building up to the Infinity Gauntlet, Starlin was on top of his game here. Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos 18, William Thomas rated it really liked it. Damn, this book brings back some great memories. Mostly of a time when Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos wasn't publishing a separate miniseries for every prologue to a major crossover event. Marvel's cosmic books have always been underrated and undersold. Anyone reading those books these days see Abnett and Lanning as the supreme architects of outerspace stories, but for decades, it was Jim Starlin. And then he proceeds to write a prologue to what is arguably the greatest Marvel story in 30 years with the Infinity Gauntlet. Although this proceeds the Gauntlet, it really isn't worth much more than a quick reading to find out where the major players come in. Drax comes back, Thanos is reborn. The Silver Surfer fights the Impossible Man. It's great because it'll pump you up before you read IG, but I was sorry not to see Adam Warlock here. As for art chores, Ron Lim is at best a competent artist. He's in no way the best suited for this book, but he gets the job done. Basically, he's me.
