ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 a Publication for the Alumni, Parents & Friends of Junipero Serra High School a Message from the President Dear Serra Community JUNIPERO SERRA HIGH SCHOOL A CATHOLIC COLLEGE PREPARATORY ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 A publication for the alumni, parents & friends of junipero serra high school a message from the president Dear Serra Community, Serra offers extraordinary programs, exceptional faculty and staff members, and unparalleled educational experiences for our Padres. Our ability to educate these young men to become leaders with a deep commitment of service is made possible by the generosity of you and our entire Serra community. It has been another remarkable year at Serra High School. We recently introduced the new Mission and Brotherhood Program, which explores modern social issues and guides our Padres to become men of integrity and inclusion. Our juniors participated in the Kairos retreat, which was led by Serra seniors. They were encouraged to look inward while strengthening their ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 relationships with God. Our performing arts students delighted audiences of all ages with their brilliant stage production of 5 30-32 42-43 Radium Girls, and our football players capped the fall season by winning WCAL and CCS titles. Having been the oldest living bishop in the United States, he experienced many of the great achievements as well as tragedies in the Catholic Church and world. My earliest memories of Bishop Quinn were while I had already entered the seminary. Although he was bishop at the time of my confirmation, I was confirmed by Venerable Alphonse Gallegos, Auxiliary Bishop of the diocese at that time. Yet, even I, in my innocent (or rather ignorant) twenties, was well aware of the reputation of Bishop Quinn. Well known for his humility and out- reach to the poor, he was an encouraging presence for my initial interest and continued path towards priestly ordination. I can ’t say I was close to Bishop Quinn. I wanted to be. I admired him greatly for his wisdom and sense of humor, but I ’ve never been a person to press my- self onto the lives of others and the Spirit did not lead us to intersect often. It was always an honor to have him speak to me, but he was a popular personality who de- served his space. I ’ve always felt, however, that he knew me far better than I knew him.

This was not a decision that was made in haste. As early as the mid-1970’s, the Brothers had written of anticipating such a conversion. But, one would have to think that the impetus for the timing of the change was the concern over the imminent closure of Bishop Manogue High School and how to properly consider the needs of the young women who would soon have to find a new school. Much in the way of preparation for the anticipated transition had taken place in the years leading up to Manogue’s closure. A formal agreement was reached between the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento and Christian Brothers High School regarding the hiring of Manogue faculty where possible and the continued involvement of the Sisters of Mercy.

    SACRAMENTO DIOCESAN ARCHIVES Vol 3 Father John E Boll, Archivist No 21 FATHER CHARLES BRADY Native Son of Arva, County Cavan, Ireland Priest of the Diocese of Sacramento Pastor Emeritus of Holy Spirit Parish, Sacramento October 2015 1 Charles Brady was born on July 12, 1930 in Arva, County Cavan, the third of eleven children born to Thomas Brady and Kate Leddy. Of the eleven children, two are priests, two farmers, two veterinarians, two nurses and three auto agents for Mercedes and Volkswagen. The nine siblings who married provided Fathers Charles and Vincent 54 nieces and nephews of whom they are very proud. Charles Begins his Education Charlie attended school at Killygarry, County Cavan. When he was 10 years of age, he went to live with his Aunt Mary and Uncle Peter who had no children. He stayed with them for 9 years while he attended St Patrick College/high school until he entered the seminary in 1949. Charlie rode his bicycle to high school from his aunt’s home five days a week, a 10 mile round trip. After high school, Charlie thought about entering to the seminary so he consulted his local parish priest. Father Smith told Charlie that he should give it a try and “if they don’t fire you,” he said, “you can become a priest.” Seminary Years In 1949, Charles Brady entered Saint Kieran’s Seminary, County Kilkenny, where he began his college studies and completed his course work in theology. The brother of Charlie’s mother, Father Patrick Leddy, was a priest of the diocese of Monterey-Fresno for many years.

    SACRAMENTO DIOCESAN ARCHIVES Vol 5 Father John E Boll No 40 Father Keith Bernard Kenny Native Son of Omaha, Nebraska Priest of the Diocese of Sacramento Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Sacramento January 2, 1925 – December 20, 1983 Keith Bernard Kenny, son of Thomas F Kenny and Verva V Heide, was born on January 2, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. He had a brother Thomas and a sister Margaret. Keith was baptized later in January at Saint Adelbert Church in Omaha. BEGINS HIS EDUCATION Keith began his education in 1930 at Sacred Heart Cathedral School in Omaha. The Kenny family then moved to San Antonio, Texas where he attended Saint Gerard parish school. His next school was Saint Paul Cathedral School in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The family then moved to California where Keith continued his education at Saint Francis parish school in Sacramento, graduating from grammar school in 1938. He then began high school at Christian Brothers School on 21st and Broadway in Sacramento, graduating in June 1942. Photo from Christian Brothers Archives Christian Brother High School, 21st and Broadway, Sacramento Keith then entered the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California from June 1942 to December 1943. He became a deck officer in the US Merchant Marines and was a licensed Second Mate for all oceans and tonnages. He served in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans, visiting Persia, Australia, India, Okinawa, Guam, Hawaii, Chile, Colombia, Cuba and many Pacific Islands. 2 BEGINS CLASSES AT SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE In the fall of 1945, Keith began classes at Sacramento City College, majoring in arts and science.

After the 8th grade, he entered Mt Angel Minor Seminary in St Benedict, Oregon for high school and two years of college. In 1957 he transferred to St Edward Seminary in Kenmore, WA for his final two years of college, graduating with a bachelor degree in philosophy. He continued his theological education at St Thomas Seminary where he earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1963. He was ordained a priest on May 25, 1963 by Bishop Sylvester Treinen at St Mary Church in St Maries, Idaho for service to the Diocese of Boise. After his ordination he was named parochial vicar of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Lewiston, ID for a year and then to St Mary Parish in Boise for a year. In 1964 his bishop appointed him chancellor and vice-officialis of the diocese, a post he held until 1968 when he left Boise to serve the diocesan mission parish of St John the Baptist in Cali, Colombia, South America.

Older brother Donnell who lives in Fairfield and Francis are the sons of Frank Quinn and Anne Chierici. Francis' father came from an Irish family and his mother from an Italian family. Francis' father Frank was a superintendent of the Scully Brothers Glove Factory but after his premature death in 1927, Anne Quinn worked for a quarter of a century as a seamstress for a shirt manufacturer to support herself and her two sons. According to Anne, Francis was “very quiet and studious as a child.” He carried newspapers for the Napa Register and sold subscriptions to the Saturday Evening Post. Francis attended St John Parish Parochial School in Napa and then, at the age of fourteen, entered St Joseph Seminary in Mountain View to begin his studies for the priesthood for service to the Church of San Francisco. Upon completing his theological studies at St Patrick Seminary, Menlo Park, Archbishop John Mitty ordained Francis a priest on June 15, 1946. After a couple months in parish ministry, the newly ordained Fr Quinn was sent to the Catholic University of America where he earned a Master's Degree in education. Returning to San Francisco, Fr Quinn was assigned to Serra High School in San Mateo where he taught for three years.
