SogniSogni RubatiRubati © Di Jeff Hawkins, 2008. -

Uncovering the Anti-Queer Sentiment in the Dianetic Perspective At present, there is a groundswell of public sensational interest in the subject of Scientology; and, in fact, in the time since I began this research paper, a nine-episode documentary series has premiered and reached finale on A&E titled “Scientology and the Aftermath”— a personal project hosted by sitcom celebrity, ex-Scientologist, and author of Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Leah Remini.1 I could not begin to enumerate the myriad exposés/memoirs of ex-Scientologists that have been published in recent years nor could I emphasize enough the rampant conspiracy theories that are at the disposal of any curious mind on what many have termed “the cult” of Scientology. -

Interview with Dr. Andre Lee Total Runtime: 58:29 [[00:00:00]] PG WATKINS: So… recording. Great! So, yeah, I’m here, I’m PG. I’m the director and co-founder of Black Bottom Archives, erm… here on this Zoom call on September 17 with Dr. Andre Lee, and really looking forward to our conversation. So, er… as I shared before our call last week, just, you know, these interviews are usually pretty informal for the most part, you know? Just an opportunity to share whatever stories you have that you wanted to share. I know you have a lot of family connections to Black Bottom, and so… really wanna just make space for whatever it is you’d like to offer, to share with us… erm… DR. ANDRE LEE: OK… PG WATKINS: To put down in our digital archive. But… DR. ANDRE LEE: OK… PG WATKINS: …let’s start off with the basic questions, you know what I mean? Just… if you wanna share… DR. ANDRE LEE: Mmm-hmm… PG WATKINS: …erm… your initial relationship with Black Bottom. If you lived there or had family that lived there. DR. ANDRE LEE: I grew up, lived there. I wasn’t born there, but, er… I lived there. I was born in Trinity Hospital, which is located at where Gratiot and 375 came together. OK? And, er… I grew up at Gratiot and Mack on Elmwood. OK? And I went to school in that area, and so… During the time I was there, there were a lotta… lotta gangs. It was all Black… and a lotta gangs. -

Surviving with Spirituality: An Analysis of Scientology in a Neoliberal World Abstract The neoliberal system has expanded fertile ground for markets to produce and distribute spiritual commodities. This paper examines how the Church of Scientology profits by selling spiritual goods to the modern neoliberal consumer. To accumulate data, I conducted interviews and participated in various rituals at the Church of Scientology in St. Paul, Minnesota. I outline and examine the data in four sections: the initiation process of the latent member, their consumption patterns in the Church, social interactions between members, and how these interactions bridge the Church into the public arena. I conclude that the Church is a market institution that promotes neoliberal ideology. Introduction “God is dead!” Friedrich Nietzsche declared in a narrative about a madman preaching in an 18 th century marketplace (1954: 95). -

The Gnostic L. Ron Hubbard: Was He Influenced by Aleister Crowley?
$ The Journal of CESNUR $ The Gnostic L. Ron Hubbard: Was He Influenced by Aleister Crowley? Massimo Introvigne CESNUR (Center for Studies on New Religions) [email protected] ABSTRACT: Scientology was defined by its founder himself, L. Ron Hubbard, as a “Gnostic religion.” In 1969, however, a Trotskyist Australian journalist and an opponent of Scientology, Alex Mitchell, disclosed in a Sunday Times article that Hubbard had been involved, in 1945–46, in the activities of California’s Agapé Lodge of the Ordo Templi Orientis, an occult organization led by British magus Aleister Crowley. The article generated a cottage industry of exposés criticizing Hubbard as having been a member of a “black magic” organization. Some scholars also believe Hubbard to have been influenced by Crowley in his subsequent writings about Dianetics and Scientology. While conflicting narratives exist about why exactly Hubbard participated in the activities of the Agapé Lodge and his leader, the rocket scientist Jack Parsons, the article argues that Hubbard researched magic well before 1945, came to conclusions about the role of magic in Western culture that are largely shared by 21st century scholars, and created with Scientology a system that is inherently religious rather than magic. KEYWORDS: Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, Babalon Working, Aleister Crowley, Jack Parsons, John Whiteside Parsons, O.T.O., Agapé Lodge. Scientology and Gnosticism Some weeks ago, I was visited by a leading Chinese scholar of religion, Zhang Xinzhang from Zhejiang University. Zhang is a scholar of Gnosticism and a critic of movements the Chinese government identifies as xie jiao (“heterodox teachings,” sometimes translated, less accurately, as “evil cults”). -
