David Von Burg, Treasurer: a Detailed List, Which Was Approved by the Auditor, Was Handed out to Those Who Wanted One RUGBY NEWS 3/00 Editorial Die Saison hat für alle Mannschaften schon längst begonnen. We’re happy to say that this hope is still alive and kicking. The season kicked off with an NSRV spon- sored 7’s tournament hosted by the Basel Birds on September 2nd. Eight teams took part, including SCN Heidelberg who, until this sea- son, had been German champions 10 years running! It was a good, hard day of rugby with each team playing at least 4 matches. Basel found itself in the running for the Plate in the final game against Bern, the Swiss teams having ceded the cup rounds to the dominating German teams. After 5 games of rugby the seven Basel Birds who entered the tournament struggled against Bern who were able to refresh their lines at half time. It was a close game, but, despite beating Bern earlier in the day, Basel lost heartbreakingly 12 – 10. The day ended in rain, but the tournament was a great success and all the teams were looking forward to the ‘third half’ and returning again next year. Revenge was had the following Sunday, 10th September, when Bern made their way back up to Basel for the first league match of the sea- son. Let it be said that Basel does not like to be beaten on their own pitch. Bern, sporting some injuries from the previous weekend, brought 8 players up to play and once again it was a game of sevens. Basel quickly showed their dominance and pace with some good passing and fast breakthrough running. Nearly every try was scored beneath the posts. The second half started a bit shakily as our erst- while captain was sin-binned for being the third player to do a high tackle, but the Birds rallied well and the final score showed it: 63 - 7. Shannon Bailey was voted Bird of the Match for kicking 9 of 9 con- versions. There was a two week break for us to recover from our bumps and bruises and then Zurich came to visit. Playing Zurich is always a 4 RUGBY NEWS 3/00 challenge and something that we Birds look forward to. Tough, well- fought rugby is always fun and Zurich didn’t disappoint us. Neither team totally dominated the match, each having problems in certain areas. Sarah was once again sin-binned, a penalty which the Basel side vocally opposed, and Zurich was able to pull even with the Birds, tying the game at 17 all. Basel was unable to score in the last minutes and had to settle for the tie. Still undefeated, but much more wary. Lili Hesse was voted Bird of the Match for some hard tackling and good positional play in her first rugby match. Again another two weeks of rest and then it was off to Yverdon on 22nd October. The Birds arrived to find only five Yverdon ladies ready to play. Not ones to waste valuable playing time, the captains settled on a game of eight’s on a half pitch, allowing the teams to work on their ball handling, instead of turning it into a running race. After a bit of panicking and thoughtless play in the opening half, Basel finally got their stuff together and began challenging the Yverdon pack in the rucks and not forcing bad passes. The Birds weren’t totally happy with their performance, but then, you can’t argue with a score of 70 - 25. Karen Ellis was voted Bird of the Match, for the second time against Yverdon, for some slippery running and strong leadership as scrum half. Due to the fact that most of the Birds will be going to Paris to watch New Zealand play France, our game against Freiburg (D) was moved up from 12th November to 29th October. Many of us were still bruised from the previous weeks’ game, but with the return of some players from holiday and injuries and a few new faces to boot, we were all ex- cited to find out that we would be playing 13’s! No more 3 man scrums, no more 2 people in the lineouts. Of course, a 13 a side match also means 35 minute halves, but the Birds rose to the occasion. Freiburg is a very good, hard team and it made for a very challenging match. Two tries were scored in the first half, but it was in the second half that Basel really had them on their back foot, though only one try was scored. Except for the occasional kick off, the ball was never in our half. The match ended in a satisfactory 18-0 victory. Helene 5 RUGBY NEWS 3/00 Goulette was voted Bird of the Match for strong tackling and straight running in her first rugby match. With only one game left for this half of the season, the Birds are hoping to spend the winter break on top of the league table. After the winter break, as well as thinking about retaining their title, there are several Basel Birds who will be hoping to represent Swit- zerland at international level. Switzerland have been invited to take part in the European Championships which will be held in Flanders, France from may 8th until 13th 2001. Didier Micalova is training the squad for these championships and everyone is hoping for a success- ful tournament and that this will be the first step of many on the inter- national ladder for ladies rugby in Switzerland. • From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition
From Chronology to Confessional: New Zealand Sporting Biographies in Transition GEOFF WATSON Abstract Formerly rather uniform in pattern, sporting biographies have evolved significantly since the 1970s, becoming much more open in their criticism of teammates and administrators as well as being more revealing of their subject’s private lives. This article identifies three transitional phases in the genre; a chronological era, extending from the early twentieth century until the 1960s; an indirectly confessional phase between the 1970s and mid 1980s and an openly confessional phase from the mid-1980s. Despite these changes, sporting biographies continue to reinforce the dominant narratives around sport in New Zealand. New Zealand sporting biographies have a mixed reputation in literary and scholarly circles. Often denigrated for their allegedly formulaic style, they have also been criticised for their lack of insight into New Zealand society.1 Representative of this critique is Lloyd Jones, who wrote in 1999, “sport hardly earns a mention in our wider literature, and … the rest of society is rarely, if ever, admitted to our sports literature.”2 This article examines this perspective, arguing that sporting biographies afford a valuable insight into New Zealand’s changing self- image and values. Moreover, it will be argued that the nature of sporting biographies themselves has changed significantly since the 1980s and that they have become much more open in their discussion of teammates and the personal lives of their subjects. Whatever one’s perspective on the literary merits of sporting biographies, their popular appeal is undeniable. Whereas the print run of most scholarly texts in New Zealand is at best a few thousand, sporting biographies consistently sell in the tens of thousands.
