craft production just because of what it does with sampling technology and that alone. It’s got quite a conservative form and quite a pop form as well just at the moment, in terms of the clarity of the sonics. When those elements are added to hip-hop tracks it must be difficult to make the vocal stand out. The biggest challenge is always getting the vocal heard on top of the track — the curse of the underground is an ill-defined vocal. When I went to bigger studios and used 1176s and LA2s it was a revelation, chucking one of them on gets the vocal up a bit. That’s how we were able to blag our way through Dizzee’s first album. What do you use in Dizzee’s vocal chain? With the budget we were on when I did Boy In Da Corner I used a Neumann TLM103B. When I bought it, £500 seemed a hell of a lot of money for a microphone. Then it goes to my Drawmer 1960 — I exchanged a couple of my keyboards for that. Certainly with Showtime, the new desk improved the vocal sound. It would be interesting to just step the gear up a notch, now we have the deal with XL, and see what happens. Do you have a label deal for Dirty Stank records with XL? I Love You came out first on Dirty Stank on the underground, plus other tunes like Ho and some beats. XL has licensed the albums from Dirty Stank so it’s not a true label deal in that sense, although with our first signings, it’s starting to move in that Nick Cage direction.

  • Eight Comedians; One Chronic Mental Illness
Eight comedians; one chronic mental illness When it comes to depression, everyone’s story is different. But a lot of time, the stories can be pretty similar. In this podcast, there are common themes that rise up in conversations with comedians. There was a pretty specific age range during which most people first felt depression. Some were as young as five, some as old as 21. But for a lot of them, it hit right down the middle: during the cracking voice years, the unexpected hair years. Jake Weisman, standup comic Jake is based in LA and one of the writers and stars of Hampton Deville, an up and coming sitcom on Comedy Central. “The first time I had depression was when puberty hit in seventh or eighth grade. I remember feeling very dark thoughts all the time. Like not wanting to be alive. I remember being kind of an asshole. I hated myself so much. I remember every day, having this layer of sludge over my brain. I felt stupid and unworthy of everything I had and I kind of hated myself. I would be really sarcastic to people.” Awareness of how much you could hate yourself comes up a lot. Also, how much you could detach from the world. Sometimes how much you didn’t want to be there anymore. Another theme that kept coming up was confusion about what was going on. You don’t have life experience to identify it. You’ve never felt anything like this before. Mike Drucker, standup and a writer Mike has worked on Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live, he’s co-writer of an upcoming Bill Nye’s show for Netflix.

  • Andy Richter – Actor, Writer, Comedian and Sidekick of Conan O’Brien
Andy Richter – actor, writer, comedian and sidekick of Conan O’Brien Andy Richter is an actor, writer and comedian. He’s best known for working with Conan O’Brien on three different talk shows over the years. He often plays dumb guys on t-v shows, but he’s super smart. He was born in Indiana but grew up mostly in Illinois. His first inkling of depression came at a very young age and it involved a record player. “My parents divorced when I was four. I remember being a child and listening to Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge over Troubled Water. I didn’t fully understand it, but I would play it over and over. My Dad stayed in Bloomington and my Mom took us to her parents in Illinois. I would play a slide show in my head of Bloomington and of our house and make myself so sad. So I learned this kind of luxuriating in sadness and depression. I must have been deriving some kind of comfort.” Most kids that age don’t act like that. But Andy had an affinity for depression. Along with finding a connection to misery, he found a connection to comedy. It was the Carol Burnett show. “Honestly, it was imitating the Carol Burnett show and making my Grandmother and my brother and my family laugh. And also being an incorrigible smart-ass. As my mother said ‘I get paid for doing what I used to get sent out into the hall for in grade school.’” Andy said as a kid, his depression went from mental state to physical symptom.

  • Team Coco Tablet App Resulted in 40,000 Downloads in the First Few Months, with Usage Continuing to Grow
Team Coco MMA CASE STUDY Tablet App Campaign Summary Many Millennials think of AT&T as a big, impersonal company that may drop their calls. The brand needed to convince this audience that AT&T has the most powerful network in the nation to enable richer experiences in consumers’ lives. To do this, the brand created a yearlong, multi-platform partnership with Conan, Conan O’Brien’s late-night TV show, to demonstrate AT&T’s ability to connect consumers to the things they love. Strategy and Execution AT&T knew the target audience, tech-savvy adults between the ages of 18 and 49, needed to see the network in action in order to understand its power. Since premiering in November 2010, Conan has been a hit with digitally connected viewers. The show’s success extends well beyond its TBS telecasts to include DVR, online and mobile viewing, and extensive online interaction. A true powerhouse when it comes to online activity and engagement, O’Brien has amassed 5,049,000 followers on Twitter — more than any other late-night host. The “Team Coco” tablet app was developed to harness the power of Turner Entertainment’s innovative social TV apps and provide consumers with an engaging content experience. The social TV app tapped into the audience’s desire for a two-way conversation with the show. AT&T had exclusive ownership of the show’s website, TeamCoco.com, while high-impact digital media executions on TBS.com generated engagement for AT&T and promoted the sponsorship. Through an on-air integration for AT&T, O’Brien and his cohost, Andy Richter, demonstrated how the app worked by walking the viewers through the app’s features, creating a stronger connection between the app, the Conan brand, and the AT&T network.

  • Response Submitted by Viacom 18 Media Private Limited On
Viacom 18 Media Private Limited, 36B, Dr. R.K. Shirodkar Marg, Parel East, Mumbai-40012 RESPONSE SUBMITTED BY VIACOM 18 MEDIA PRIVATE LIMITED ON THE CONSULTATION PAPER FOR TARIFF ISSUES RELATED TO CABLE TV SERVICES IN NON-CAS AREAS (Consultation Paper No.5/2010) (“Paper”) Viacom18 is a broadcaster and inter-alia owns channels like “MTV”, “Vh1”, “NICK” and “Colors”. At the outset, we would like to appreciate and welcome the initiative and the effort taken by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (“TRAI”) in compiling the data from broadcasters across genres and other stake holders and for providing a platform for discussion of some issues which are crucial for the development of the television industry in India. Preamble Viacom18 as a broadcaster operate channels in the genres of Music (MTV and Vh1), Kids (NICK) and General Entertainment (Colors). The Paper however categorises genres broadly into GEC -English, Hindi and Regional, News- English, Hindi, Regional and Business, Sports, Movies - English, Hindi and Regional, Kids and Niche category. Further the Niche category has been referred in the paper as channels based on science, golf, infotainment, education etc. Therefore it is not clear in which category our channels MTV and Vh1 could fit into. From the Paper it is apparent that the major roadblock for the growth of television industry in India is under declaration due to lack of addressability and digitization of cable networks. So we urge that the main focus of TRAI should be on the issues of digitization and bringing about addressability. Any regulation including fixation of tariff should only happen in an addressable market if there is unreasonable pricing by any broadcaster due to a lack of competition.
