For immediate- release G-6 BANK DEBITS August 16, 1962 AND DEPOSIT TURNOVER

Bank debits to demand deposit accounts, except interbank and U. S. Government accounts, as reported by "banks in 344 leading centers for the month of July aggregated $280 billion. During the past three months debits amounted to $867 billion or 10.0 per cent above the total reported for the corresponding period a year ago.

At banks in New York City there was an increase of 9-3 per cent compared with the cor- responding three-months period a year ago; at 6 other leading centers the increase was 12.$ per cent; and at 337 other centers it was 9*5 per cent.

Seasonally adjusted debits to demand deposit accounts for 337 centers for the month of July are $112.3, an increase of 3 per cent over the preceding month. The seasonally adjusted Rrmuftl rate of demand deposit turnover at banks outside New York and other financial centers for the month of July is 28.6. Debits and turnover for 337 centers for the first seven months of 1962, averaged 10 and 7 per cent higher, respectively, than in the corresponding period a year ago.
