www.lwd.com.au ADT update a Garry Stewart Thinker in Residence at Deakin University Next week our Artistic Director Garry Stewart will be heading off to D take up a spot as 'Thinker in Residence' at 's prestigious m Deakin University. The Thinkers in Residence initiative is aimed at stimulating innovative research, establishing global networks, creating a vibrant research culture and ensuring that Deakin keeps pace with exciting research developments and knowledge creation. It provides an opportunity for highly-ranked researchers from around the world & a range of fields to engage, develop and invigorate the Deakin research community. Volume 3 July 2012 Garry (pictured right) will commence the project at Deakin in July, and then head back later this year with three ADT dancers - Daniel Jaber, Kimball Wong and Scott Ewen. He will be researching technology in performance, firstly undertaking theoretical research, and then later practical with the dancers. The project will run for three-years in total, Garry travelling to Melbourne for a total of two months of each year. Garry Stewart, Photo: Chris Herzfeld

This is a very exciting project for both Garry and the company. Garry will apply his findings from Deakin, at ADT, in the development of new dance works - you can expect to see an exciting combination of 3D and live performance in the future!

In the Studio - Nought Development Daniel Jaber is back in the studio, ready to continue the development of his ADT-commissioned work, Nought. This is the first time ADT has commissioned an ADT dancer to make a full-length work for the company.

"This is an incredible opportunity to work with an amazing ensemble of dancers under the guidance and mentorship of one of Australia's most influential choreographers - Garry Stewart," Daniel commented.

"Nought is an investigation into compositional complexities using numerological logic and formal structuring devices, the work is inspired by Michael Serres writings on the dancer as a number a calculator and that of vein blank, naked, non existent and possessing the body of the possible."

Daniel and the ADT dancers will be busy working on Nought whilst Garry is at Deakin. There will be an infor- mal showing of Nought in September in Adelaide (details to come), and the work will make its world premiere in 2013, also in Adelaide.

From The Ground Up

Restless Dance Theatre will soon be starting an exciting long term residency at the Riverland Special school in Berri called: From The Ground Up. This follows on from a highly successful residency conducted with the school in 2009/10. In this strand the young people will access the new technologies in the creative industries which drive their interest in online media, advancements in social media and networking. They will be creating moving images (cartooning), and exploring the potentials of generating dance movement for film.

The Restless team will be led by dance artist Emma Stokes who will be assisted by Restless tutors: Lorcan Hopper and Matthew Shilcock as well as by RYT dance artist Lena Olds. Restless Interim Artistic Director Roz Hervey will provide leadership for the team.

TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM www.qv-creative.com/thevaudevilleclub MEMBERS NEWS - Lina Limosani A Delicate Situation - InSPACE development After a long absence from Adelaide, Lina Limosani returns with her international collaborators to do a second a stage creative development on a piece drenched in Malaysian folklore and chilling urban horror. A Delicate Situation is a dance theatre work that seeks to explore the nature of D humanity’s approach to superstition in death, dying and the afterlife. By examining both m the omnipresence of death and death lore across cultures, working with the idioms of dance and theatre, A Delicate Situation sets out to demonstrate how these are inter- preted according to the beliefs, values and taboos prevalent in each particular culture.

To convey this analogy, the work explores Malaysia’s obsession with the supernatural and the folklore related to death and dying that continues to inform its cultural belief systems. Set on Malaysian territory, A Delicate Situation is the story of a Western woman’s struggle to come to terms with death whilst surrounded by a culture saturated in legend, myth and superstation. Utilizing Malaysia’s occultism, the distinctive vision for this work is a highly visual stage work in Volume 3 July 2012 which dance, physical theatre and costume are the primary creative tools.

Lina intends to use her extensive experience in the field of dance to continue creating a performance work that whilst drawing on dance techniques, is fundamentally dramatic in nature. The themes and concepts of A Delicate Situation are suited to a purely visual theatrical interpretation and with a bold collage of characters, music, set design and lighting. A Delicate Situation aims to be intensely cerebral and the experience of watching it to be visceral, haunting and compelling. Dance, theatre, sound, puppetry, shadow play and traditional crafts will be used as a means of providing new insights on the past and present and to communicate the myths, tales and contemporary stories.

Choreographer / Director: Lina Limosani Set / Costume: Eve Lambert Performers: Carol Wellman Kelly and Suhaili Micheline Sound: Hardesh Singh Lighting: Ben Flett

History of A Delicate Situation A Delicate Situation was first presented through a choreographic residency at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre in December 2008 with the support of MyDance Alliance, Rimbun Dahan, and Asialink. With a cast of four Malaysian dancers and Sound Designer the work investigated Malaysian superstition through the story of the Pontianak; a female vampire ghost believed to have died at childbirth. It received an enthusiastic response (seen by its nomination for three awards in the Boh Cameronian Arts Awards Malaysia),

In 2009 a self-funded creative development period in Adelaide was a personal investment for the progressive growth of the work. Teasing out the strengths of the ideas whilst exploring western attitudes towards the subject matter. The aid of Eve Lambert, two Australian artists and Australian Dance Theatre, provided the opportunity to broaden the works cultural foundation, begin reconstructing it to address theoretical and conceptual weak- nesses, and focus on drawing out and extrapolating its strengths.

In May 2012, A Delicate Situation was invited to return to Rimbun Dahan to expand upon the initial premises of the work, incorporating into the original concept the significant advances that arose from the 2009 development period and to prepare for the production stage in July.
