An annotated list of Italian Renaissance humanists, their writings about Jews, and involvement in Hebrew studies, ca. 1440-ca.1540 This list, arranged in chronological order by author’s date of birth, where known, is a preliminary guide to Italian humanists’ Latin and vernacular prose and poetic accounts of Jews and Judaic culture and history from about 1440 to 1540. In each case, I have sought to provide the author’s name and birth and death dates, a brief biography highlighting details which especially pertain to his interest in Jews, a summary of discussions about Jews, a list of relevant works and dates of composition, locations of manuscripts, and a list of secondary sources or studies of the author and his context arranged alphabetically by author’s name. Manuscripts are listed in alphabetical order by city of current location; imprints, as far as possible, by ascending date. The Oceanographic Achievements of Vito Volterra in Italy and Abroad1
Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies- Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 251-266 The Oceanographic Achievements of Vito Volterra in Italy and Abroad1 By Sandra Linguerri The aim of this paper is to introduce Vito Volterra’s activity as a policy maker in the field of oceanography. In 1908, he was the promoter of the Thalassographic Committee (then in 1910 Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee), a national endeavor for marine research vis-à-vis the industrial world of fisheries, which soon internationalized. Abroad it was affiliated with the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea, led by Albert I, Prince of Monaco (1919-1922) and then by Vito Volterra himself (1923-1928).1 Keywords: History, International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea, Oceanography, Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee, Vito Volterra. Vito Volterra and the Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee Vito Volterra (1860-1940) (Goodstein 2007, Guerraggio and Paoloni 2013, Simili and Paoloni 2008) is generally considered one of the greatest mathematicians of his time. His most important contributions were in functional analysis, mathematical ph‟ scientific activities, rather it will focus on his contribution to talassographic (or oceanographic) studies, and especially on the creation of the Royal Italian Talassographic Committee (Linguerri 2005, Ead 2014). In 1900, after teaching in Pisa and Turin, Volterra was offered a chair in mathematical physics at the University of Rome, where he was invited to give the inaugural lecture for the new academic year entitled Sui tentativi di applicazione delle matematiche alle scienze biologiche e sociali (On the attempts to apply mathematics to the biological and social sciences), which demonstrated his great interest in the application of mathematics to biological sciences and to economic research. -

RAFFA, The University of Texas at Austin The approach of the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death is a propi- tious time to recall the events that drove him from his native Florence and marked his life in various Italian cities before he found his final refuge in Ra- venna, where he died and was buried in 1321. Drawing on early chronicles and biographies, modern historical research and biographical criticism, and the poet’s own writings, I construct this narrative of “Dante’s Political Life” for the milestone commemoration of his death. The poet’s politically-motivated exile, this biographical essay shows, was destined to become one of the world’s most fortunate misfortunes. Volterra Volterra, Known to the Ancient Etruscans As Velathri Or Vlathri and to the Romans As Volaterrae, Is a Town and a Comune in Tuscany
Volterra Volterra, known to the ancient Etruscans as Velathri or Vlathri and to the Romans as Volaterrae, is a town and a comune in Tuscany. The town was a Bronze Age settlement of the Proto-Villanovan culture, and an important Etruscan centre, one of the "twelve cities" of the Etruscan League. The site is believed to have been continuously inhabited as a city since at least the end of the 8th century BC. It became a municipium allied to Rome at the end of the 3rd century BC. The city was a bishop's residence in the 5th century, and its episcopal power was affirmed during the 12th century. With the decline of the episcopate and the discovery of local alum deposits, Volterra became a place of interest for the Republic of Florence, whose forces conquered it. Florentine rule was not always popular, and opposition occasionally broke into rebellions which were quelled by Florence. When the Republic of Florence fell in 1530, Volterra came under the control of the Medici family and subsequently its history followed that of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.4 The Roman Theatre The Main Sights 1. In other instances he is able to bring to the English version qualities which mirror the source text, such as "freely-given" to render and to echo the dieresis of "grîizïoso" (Sonnet 31) or "bound from bough to bough" to reproduce the alliterative effect of "de fronda in fronda" (Sonnet 6), with the felicitous addition of the verb "bound" to give greater relief to the line's rhythmic quality. In working at the macro-level. Di Tommaso himself discusses the type of strategies necessary in order to render the sense and the aesthetic essence of the source text, in short, in order to convey the text's ideolect in another language: "At times the translation achieves an effect which was not intended in the original, but which seems appropriate and worth retaining. The last stanza of the fourth sonnet, for example, begins and ends 'with her,' thus embodying in its form the inherent Petrarchan platonism of the poem and the idea of the cyclical return of the Golden Age which the poet identifies with the Lady's appearance on Earth" (ix). Although, as he says, the original does not intend the effect which the translation gives, the translation successfully signals to the reader the- matic dimensions and poetic structures which are fundamental to the collection in gen- eral. And Di Tommaso concludes: "In the course of juggling such elements, I have in- voked Accuracy . and Readability as my muses" (ix-x). In this regard, his accomplish- ments have been considerable. The translation is prefaced by a very useful introduction to Boiardo's canzoniere, both in the context of the literary tradition which came to the fifteenth-century poet from the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance and in the socio-cultural context of the courtly environment of Quattrocento Ferrara. -

EnterText 2.3 MICHAEL G. CORNELIUS Conradin, Hawking This is not a true history of the short and tragic life of Conradin of Sicily. Much of what I write here is found in chronicles of the day, and the information presented is to the best of my knowledge true, but I have taken some liberties, in accordance with the wants of my discourse. The different and various accounts of the short and undistinguished life of Conradin of Sicily agree on very little, save for the bare facts of his case. Was he held in a palace, as one modern historian asserts, or the same stinking dungeon as his Uncle Manfred’s family? Did he sleep at night beside his beloved in an opulent bed of silk and cherry wood, or on a pile of straw listening to the cries and screams of Beatrice, Manfred’s only daughter? We will never know. What is the value, anyway, of one singular life, of a footnote to the vast encyclopedia of history? Should we care about Conradin, about his love for Frederick of Baden, his unjust and cruel death at the hands of Anjou? Should we care about two men who share such a depth of love that one willingly joins the other on the scaffold, rather Michael G. Cornelius: Conradin, Hawking 74 EnterText 2.3 than be left alone? Or is this just another moment in history, largely unknown and forgotten? Perhaps Conradin’s life had no real value, or no more value than the life of any other man or woman.
