ELECTORAL HISTORY – STEPS TOWARDS DEMOCRACY

1.11 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF PRIMARY SOURCES

NB For all secondary sources, see notes within each section.

This bibliography of primary (pre-1914) sources distinguishes between manuscript and printed sources, incorporating all materials used in the creation of the LED in 1.11.1-7. In addition, metropolitan elections always generated numerous publications in the form of pamphlets and other literature, which have been used for contextual interpretation. These are too numerous to survey in complete detail here. But many sources have been incorporated in 1.11.8-10, as a guide to the range of materials available, including: caricatures, contemporary electoral histories, diaries, electoral propaganda, letters, maps, parliamentary papers, public speeches, and songs. A final section 1.11.11 indicates key electronic primary sources, whose number is growing daily with the advance of digitisation. The main headings are as follows:

MANUSCRIPT PRIMARY SOURCES USED IN LED 1.11.1 Ms poll books 1.11.2 Rate and tax assessments 1.11.3 Other Ms lists 1.11.4 Contemporary papers

PRINTED PRIMARY SOURCES USED IN LED 1.11.5 Printed poll books 1.11.6 Other printed lists 1.11.7 Parliamentary papers

1.11.5 Printed poll books

John Sims’ Handlist of British parliamentary poll books records 11 poll books for Middlesex, 16 for the City of London, and six for Westminster. The LED project has been able to make some additions to this bibliography of contemporary printed editions from parliamentary elections, noted below as being ‘not in Sims’: see E.M. Green, ‘New discoveries of poll books’, Parliamentary History, 24 (2005), 332-67. Many of these are variant editions. This section includes all printed parliamentary poll books from within Middlesex, together with a solitary Southwark poll. It also includes printed non-parliamentary polls for civic office. ESTC numbers have been given where possible; and locations have been given for non-ESTC items. Many poll books are also available in photocopy at IHR. Manuscript poll books and marked electoral registers have been noted in 1.11.1 above.
