The objective was to determine the characteristicof the maintenance of Gossypium barbadense in the Central-West Region of Brazil, with the aim to foster the conservation of the species. Expeditions were conducted in 2014-2015 in Southeast Goiás, where cotton collection has not been reported before. Data from previous collections in Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Distrito Federal available in Albrana database were considered this study. In the Central-West Region of Brazil, 466 accesses of G. barbadense were recorded, found most frequently in backyards (91.4%), but also spontaneous plants (7.5%), farm boundary (0.8%) and commercial farming (0.2%) have also been found. The main use indicated by VDU was as medicinal plant (0.66), therefore this is the main reason for in situ preservation. -

Non-cultivated plants may be as susceptible as crops to aflatoxin contamination. Concentrations of aflatoxins in commonly consumed wild fruits from markets and characteristics of associated aflatoxin-producers need to be determined to assess the aflatoxin risk posed by handling, processing, storage, and consumption. Samples of Schinziophyton rautanenii (n = 22), Vangueriopsis lanciflora (n = 7), Thespesia garckeana (n = 17), Parinari curatellifolia (n = 17), Ziziphus spp. (n = 10), Adansonia digitata (n = 9), and Tamarindus indica (n = 23) were assayed for aflatoxin using lateral-flow immunochromatography from 2016 to 2017. (Malvaceae, Malvoideae) cultivadas en España © 2008-2019 José Manuel Sánchez de Lorenzo-Cáceres www.arbolesornamentales.es El género Alyogyne Alef. comprende arbustos perennes, con indumento denso o de pelos esparcidos, con las hojas alternas, pecioladas, enteras, palmatilobadas o muy divididas, con estípulas diminutas y caedizas. Las flores son solitarias, axilares, sobre pedicelos largos y articulados. El epicáliz posee 4-10(-12) segmentos unidos en la base; el cáliz consta de 5 sépalos, más largos que el epicáliz, y la corola es más o menos acampanada, regular, formada por 5 pétalos obovados de color blan- co, rosa, lila o púrpura, adnatos a la base de la columna estaminal, cubiertos de pelos estrellados externamente. El androceo posee numerosos estambres (50-100) dispuestos en verticilos, con los filamentos unidos formando una columna que rodea al estilo, y las anteras uniloculares, dehiscentes por suturas longitudinales. El gineceo posee un ovario súpero, con 3-5 lóculos, cada uno de los cuales encierra 3-10 rudimentos seminales. Los estilos están unidos casi hasta el ápice, dividiéndose finalmente en 5 estigmas. El fruto es una cápsula dehis- cente por 3-5 valvas, conteniendo numerosas semillas (3-50) de pequeño tamaño, reniformes o globosas, glabras o pelosas. El nombre procede del griego alytos = unido y gyne = mujer, en alu- sión a los estilos unidos. Según Lewton (1915), el nombre debería ser Allogyne, del griego állos = otro, diferente y gyne = mujer, hembra, en alusión a la diferencia con Hibiscus en cuanto a los estilos. Realmente esta es la gran diferencia con el género Hibiscus, donde los estilos se separan por debajo de los estigmas, mientras que en Alyogyne están unidos justo hasta llegar a los estig- mas, momento en que se dividen. -

College, Barasat, Kolkata- 700124, West Bengal, India *Author for Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT Epicalyx, staminal tube, stigma and trichome morphological characters have been used to characterize some common members of Malvaceae s.s. These characters have been analyzed following a recent molecular phylogenetic classification of Malvaceae s.s. Stigmatic character is effective for segregation of the tribe Gossypieae from other tribes. But precise distinction of other two studied tribes, viz. Hibisceae and Malveae on the basis of this character proved to be insufficient. Absence of epicalyx in Malachra has indicated an independent evolutionary event within Hibisceae. Distinct H-shaped trichome of Malvastrum has pointed out its isolated position within Malveae. Staminal tube morphological similarities of Abutilon and Sida have suggested their closeness. A key to the genera has been provided for identification purpose. ROCK Consulting Botanist, Board of Agriculture and Forestry HONOLULU: HAWAIIAN GAZETTE CO., LTD. 1913 ALPHABETICAL LIST OF HAWAIIAN NAMES OF PLANTS. The following list of Hawaiian plant-names has been compiled from various sources. Hillebrand in his valuable Flora of the Hawaiian Islands has given many Hawaiian names, especially of the more common species; these are incorporated in this list with a few corrections. Nearly all Hawaiian plant-names found in this list and not in Hillebrand's Flora were secured from Mr. Francis Gay of the Island of Kauai, an old resident in this Terri tory and well acquainted with its plants from a layman's stand point. It was the writer's privilege to camp with Mr. Gay in the mountains of Kauai collecting botanical material; for almost every species he could give the native name, which he had se cured in the early days from old and reliable natives. Mr. Gay had made spatter prints of many of the native plants in a large record book with their names and uses, as well as their symbolic meaning when occurring in mele (songs) or olioli (chants), at tached to them. For all this information the writer is indebted mainly to Mr. Francis Gay and also to Mr. Augustus F. Knudsen of the same Island. The writer also secured Hawaiian names from old na tives and Kahunas (priests) in the various islands of the group.
