This is an appeal against the order dated 28.09.2007 of the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court in Writ Petition No. 7987 (W) of 2002. 3. The facts very briefly are that during the British rule, Victoria Memorial Hall was built in the memory of Queen Victoria in Central Kolkata. After independence, this monument continues to be known for its beautiful architecture and green surroundings. 2 To the north of the Victoria Memorial Hall is a huge stretch of land known as ‘the Maidan’ which is covered by green grass and interspersed with a large number of trees, bushes and shrubs. At the end of about 2 kms. of this greenery is the Esplanade where another monument known as the ‘Sahid Minar’ stands, and by the side of the Sahid Minar is a bus terminus. To protect and preserve the Victoria Memorial Hall and its green surroundings, a public interest litigation (Writ Petition No. 7987(W) of 2002) was filed in the Calcutta High Court by the respondent nos. 1 to 5. 4. After hearing all concerned parties and considering the concerned affidavits and counter-affidavits as well as recommendations of expert bodies including the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (for short ‘NEERI’), the High Court inter alia directed in the impugned order that the bus terminus at Esplanade be shifted to a distant place within six months. -

In Calcutta worked as DOP for Mr.Shanti P Choudhury ( Image India Films ) on six documentaries and also for Mr.Chidanand Dasgupta as his DOP for five documentaries before leaving for Mumbai. In Mumbai he shot nearly 120 Ad commercials as DOP, more than 100 documentary films, about 35 Feature films as DOP and Corporate films etc. till date. Some of notable films are, Griha Pravesh , Saaransh,Thikana, Rao Saheb, Mere Saath Chal, Censor,Jana Na Dil Se Door etc., Have done 7 feature films in Punjabi ( Directing two and as DOP 5 ),Bengali film " Anand Niketan" as DOP. Have Directed & Photographed a Hindi Feature film " NAAZUK SAA MODD " ( To be released). He is also a writer and presently co-written two features for Mr.Avtar Kohli Alias Kuku Kohli, maker of "Phool Aur Kante" and many more hindi block busters. Have worked as DOP in the feature films with Basu Bhattacharya, Mahesh Bhatt,Vijaya Mehta,Chetan Anand,Dev Anand,Vijaya Anand,Harpal Tiwana,Priti Sapru,Sujit Guha, Suresh Sharma,Tanvir Ahmed and many more. -

6 Historical Background And Socio-Economic Condition Of Ward No 58 Under Kolkata Municipality Kuhumita Bachhar Assistant Teacher Sanat Roy Chowdhury Institution Kolkata Abstract Ward no 58 is an underprivileged area of kolkata. Where the other part of kolkata is developing from every aspect like culture, literature, behavior, economic condition but this area remains the same. Considering this mysterious situation, small step has taken to search its reason from past and tried to present their recent socio-economic condition, and hope for their betterment. Key word: socio condition, economic condition Introduction-To explore the history of modern Kolkata, we trace back to1698- when The British leased three villages – Gobindapur, Sutanuti, Kolkata from Subarna Roychowdhury for Rs 1300 a year, and incepted our beloved Kolkata. In late 17th century,an Englishman called Job Charnock established Kolkata from three sleepy hamlet – Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kolkata. Kolkata Municipal Corporation was established to improve and run the city properly. Its main work was to build and maintain roads, drains, in proper way. Taxes were levied on housing, lighting, and vehicle. Now the mega city is divided into 144 administrative wards that are grouped into 16 boroughs. Here I am going to discuss about 58 no wards under Kolkata Municipal Corporation. History of original residents – Before discussing about the socio-economic condition of residents of this ward we have to know why their previous generation had come here and started living permanently. The leather industry took roots in the eastern part of Calcutta in Dhapa,Tangra,Topsia and Tiljala. These are marshy areas in which are found a good number of big tanneries as well as small ones. -

PREFACE What prompted us in writing this Book. As the saying goes, truth is the first casualty of war; so is true history, the first casualty of India’s struggle for independence. We, the Hindus of Bengal happen to be one of the worst victims of Islamic intolerance in the world. Bengal, which had been under Islamic attack for centuries, beginning with the invasion of the Turkish marauder Bakhtiyar Khilji eight hundred years back. We had a respite from Islamic rule for about two hundred years after the English East India Company defeated the Muslim ruler of Bengal. Siraj-ud-daulah in 1757. But gradually, Bengal had been turned into a Muslim majority province.
