No-sew overlays top breathable mesh to help deliver a secure fit. Striking materials and colors give this iteration next-level aesthetics. Available now at ASP stores! What is Fibrosis and what does it have to do with me? If you look it up, fibrosis is defined as excess fibrous connective tissue as a result of healing or a reactive process. You may have heard of it under different terms.

Scar tissue is fibrosis The scars one has from a surgery or an injury are fibrotic tissue. This includes the scar tissue in and around joints that limit their movement. Uterine fibroids and fibrocystic breasts are made up of this fibrotic type tissue. There are many examples of fibrotic tissue growing and effecting internal organs. Lung conditions like COPD and Emphysema are marked with fibrotic tissue growing and restricting normal function. In the circulation fibrosis forms a spider web sort of matrix that then gets filled in with cholesterol and calcium into what you know as plaque lining the arteries. Many times this repair process is needed to occur. Other times it becomes pathological and ‘repairs’ too much. Imagine the symptoms that can come from an overgrowth of fibrosis. Stiffness, tightness, chronic pain, and fatigue is a short list.

Why does this stuff overgrow in the first place? Remember when you were young and got a cut? It healed quickly and the scar was smooth and pretty much unnoticeable after a while. As we age, a cut and the eventual scar is a whole different experience. It is typical that the scar is bigger, bumpier, and more noticeable. The difference in the young you and the older you (older than 30) is that you don’t have the enzyme supply you used to have. Enzymes (in this case of fibrosis, proteolytic enzymes) are catalysts that can cause many different chemical reactions to occur faster. They have the ability to break down protein (fibrosis in this case). According to enzyme theory, we have a finite amount through our lifetime. When we are young we have plenty but by the time we reach 30 our body starts rationing our enzyme supply. That is why you see signs of fibrosis happening when we get older. There isn’t an abundance of enzymes to keep the scar tissue smooth and efficient. A runner who wants to keep running, who wants to improve their times, who wants to get rid of that nagging injury and wants to be healthy and energetic, I suggest they try systemic enzymes. I suggest this because fibrosis can affect all of the above. Systemic Enzymes are enzymes in a supplement form. You would supply your body with enzymes that do have the ability to break down fibrotic tissue. Studies have shown that systemic enzymes improve healing time, reduce pain levels, improve joint mobility, and aid in detoxification and cardiovascular support too.

They do have a long list of benefits, kind of like vitamins. By the way, do you take vitamins? I’m guessing, yes. Do you know the other name for vitamins? The other name for a vitamin is a ‘co-enzyme’. Vitamins exist to help enzymes do their job over and over. For me, this answers the question: Why do vitamins work super well in some people and not so well in others? If they don’t have the enzyme supply for the vitamins to support, there will be little to no affect. We blame it on the vitamin not working, but maybe there was low supply of enzyme. Fibrosis is a normal process in our body that can get out of control. It can get out of control if there are not enough enzymes to keep it in check. The list of health problems that could be helped by enzymes is very long. I tried to focus on scar tissue problems that a runner might understand and be experiencing. In my office I have several tools that I use to help breakdown fibrosis from the outside. I like the idea of enzymes breaking down fibrosis from the inside. There are several products available in stores and online. Just like most things there are levels of quality. I carry a brand in my office called Fibrenza (you can find it online too). I did my research and thought this was on the top of the quality pile. If you have any questions regarding this article, I would be happy to hear from you and do my best to answer your questions. If you do take an enzyme product I would like to hear about your results.

As the current pres ident, I thought I should contribute something to the Newsletter. So here it goes.. OLD NEWS : Thanks to Rod Robey and the rest of the club officers for 2017. They did a great job. Also, thanks to Bob and Faith Morris and all their volunteer helpers for putting on another excellent “ Gala”. It was a blast, as usual. CURRENT NEWS: It looks like participation in our Wednesday night fun runs around Mile Square Park and at our monthly meetings is picking up. The more t he merrier and it also means that it is easier to have someone to run with. If you have friends or relatives who are interested in running, invite them to join us. Membership is not required, but hopefully we can generate some new members when they see how much fun we have as a club. FUTURE NEWS: Several events are coming up in the near future. The always fun Hash Run is on April 22 (I highly recommend this family friendly event put on by Pat Copps) (or is it Kopps?) On April 29, a new event is planned at Coastal Peak Park; a hike/run along the trails of El Moro. That is a really cool place to hike or run (optional). If you have never been there, come check it out. May 20 will be the 27th Ekiden Relay in Huntington Beach Central Park. Fun and free. While our treasury isn’t desperate, the officers and I decided to try a couple of fun d raisers this year. A garage sale and a poker run are in the planning stages. So if you have a nything you want to clear out of your house or garage, save it up for the garage sale. These are both going to be fun events. Ok, so that’s all for now. The word “fun” has popped up several times in this article. That’s because Rod and his fellow officers did such a good job last year that or motto this year is “Keeping it fun.” Fountain Valley Chapter News Fountain Valley Chapter News
