Description and Sources Description Trial excavation in 1967 on the site of a proposed telephone exchange, 65yds. NE. of the Roman building found in 1832 (see 0530), distinguished 3 successive phases of timber construction: a substantial palisade running across the site from NE. to SW.; a rectangular building of two rooms with thatched roof, perhaps a workshop, in use in the late C3 and burned down not later than 310; a structure of wattle and clay on a different alignment.{1} Black suggests that the palisade may have deliminated a temenos associated with a possible temple nearby (see 0531).{2}ü Activity Reference - 1 = WS450 Sources (1) Excavation archive: Rule M. 1968. Description and Sources Description The archbishops of Canterbury possessed an ancient park at Slindon, given to the see by Henry I. It was exchanged with the crown in 1543 and granted to Sir Thomas Palmer in 1553.{1}{2}

The Archbishops of Canterbury possessed an ancient park at Slindon. It was given to the See by Henry I. It was exchanged with the crown in 1543 and was granted to Sir Thomas Palmer in 1553. By 1962, a large proportion of the old deer-park pale remains in good condition extending southwards and westwards from SU95790855 to SU96160797. Elsewhere it has been destroyed. It comprises a strong, broad bank with inner ditch. The park is now owned by the National Trust. By 1972, it was noted that the perimeter feature on the north side on a north facing slope is different in character as it comprises, in places, three scarps separated by terraces or silted-up ditches. Though undoubtedly the remains of the pale, there is the suggestion of an earlier feature, and the configuration is not unlike the linear earthwork of unknown age and purpose some 1600 metres to the east.{3} Sources (1) Bibliographic reference: Shirley. 1867. Monument Types and Dates BOUNDARY MARKER (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD) Evidence DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE PARK (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD) Evidence DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE

Description and Sources Description To the N. of Arundel Castle is the 'Little Park' (now the Arundel Castle cricket pitch), on the N. of which is the great or New Park. The Medieval park, with the Ruelle wood which belonged to it, was situated further to the W., and though contemporary with the castle, had no immediate communication with it. After the new park was formed, 1797, the Medieval park was converted into a farm.{1}

The park is shown conventionally on maps of 1646, 1724, 1778 as well as on one of late C18.{2}{3}{4}{5}

To the north of Arundel Castle lies the"Little Park," on the north of which is the great or New Park (late 18th century). The ancient park, with the Ruelle wood which belonged to it, was situated further to the west; and though contemporary with the castle, had no immediate communication with it. After the New Park was formed, 1797, the ancient Park was converted into a farm. The Park Pale follows the north side of the road from TQ013069 to SU 978080, turns north to enclose Rewell Wood, ceasing about 997098. Eastern limits not determinable. Conventional portrayal of park. Bugdens map of 1724 suggests the park boundary excluded Ruelle Wood to the west, and its eastern boundary ran to the west of the old London Road. A document of 1635 referring to"the great Park Pale" supports this. Certainly the parks southern boundary was immediately to the north of the Arundel-Chichester road. By 1972, there was no trace of a pale defining the perimeter of as shown on Yeakell and Gardner's map, with the possible exception of a bank and inner (north) ditch overlaid by a modern bank, extending from SU 99240742 to SU 99480741. {6}

The park is mentioned in documents from 1299 onwards. {7} Sources (1) Bibliographic reference: Ellis WS. 1885. Parks and forests of Sussex. 7 (2) Map: Jansen. 1646. (3) Map: Bugden. 1724. A park attached to the manor at Aldingbourne is noted in 1225 and mention is made of its paling in the same century. Most of the large timber had been felled before the mid 17th century and the whole was disparked about that time. In 1962, no traces of the park were found during fieldwork. Air photographs taken at the time of excavation of Tote Copse failed to reveal any signs of the Bishops Palace. In 1971, there was no ground evidence of the Bishops Palace or the park. A crop mark on the RAF aerial photograph, running in part along the parish boundary at SU 91600418 could be the course of a park pale, but nothing remains on the ground. {2}

Description and Sources Description Kill Devil Copse appears to be surrounded by boundary banks. {1}{2} To the west the bank is 0.3m high and 0.5m-2.0m wide, not very straight, the new fence line follows it approximately. At the eastern end it is 0.5m high and 2.0m wide. It appears to be older than the western portion, with older trees (pre 1795) planted on it, they consist mainly of beech clearly planted at intervals, some are pollarded and some are open grown. There is no smallholding or sub-division inside it. {3} To the west there are three terraces on a short south facing slope, the lowest is 30.0m long and 2.0m high, this is also the shortest one, it is a warm area, ideal for cultivation. {4} Sources (1) Map: 1840. Monument Types and Dates BOUNDARY MARKER (Post Medieval - 1700 AD to 1899 AD) Evidence STRUCTURE

Description and Sources Description The boundary around Slindon Estate was marked out in the 18th and 19th centuries by the establishment of a chain of boundary markers bearing the initials of the owners either side of the border. This type is made of cast iron with the initial 'F' for Fletcher (then owner of the neighbouring estate) and 'L' on the Slindon estate side. This refers to Colonel Charles Leslie (1788-1870) who on the death of the Old Countess of Newburgh in 1861 took possesion of the Slindon estate. There are several, at least three, whose location is known but have disappeared, and some are becoming submerged in vegetation. All the remaining posts have been neglected. {1} Posts are located at: SU 9899 1390, SU 9846 1355, SU 9842 1332, SU 9832 1321, SU 9813 1287, SU 9808 1280. Description and Sources Description The boundary around Slindon estate was marked out in the 18th and 19th centuries by the establishment of a chain of boundary markers bearing the initials of the owners either side of the border. This type is made of stone and inscribed with the initials 'G' and 'T'. It has a metal pin banged into the top of it presumably for surveying purposes as a bench mark arrow is curved into the stone next to the pin. It is possible that the initial 'T' inscribed on the stone refers to one of the female members of the Kempe family, owners of the estate from around c1560 until 1753, who later became Lady Titchbourne. Alternatively the 'G' could refer to the name 'Green' who is the current recent owner of the neighbouring estate. There are several, at least three, whose location was not known but have disappeared, all the remaining posts have suffered from neglect. {1} Activity Reference - 1 = WS50 Sources (1) Bibliographic reference: Whitfield C. 1994. Monument Types and Dates BOUNDARY MARKER (In Use, Unknown date) Evidence Cartographic Evidence

Description and Sources Description 'Old Hundred Boundary' is shown at this location on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map (dated approximately 1869-1875). On the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey Map (dated approximately 1895 - 1898) and the 3rd Edition Ordnance Survey Map (dated approximately 1909 -1912) allotment gardens are shown to the south of the boundary. By the 5th Edition Ordnance Survey Map (dated 1957) there are large detached houses on Horsham Road (with driveways cutting through the boundary) but the presence of hachures suggest that the boundary was still recognisable as a bank post WWII and may continue to this day . {1} {2} {3} {4} {5} Sources (1) Cartographic materials: Ordnance Survey. 1869-1875.
