NE. of the Roman building found in 1832 (see 0530), distinguished 3 successive phases of timber construction: a substantial palisade running across the site from NE. to SW.; a rectangular building of two rooms with thatched roof, perhaps a workshop, in use in the late C3 and burned down not later than 310; a structure of wattle and clay on a different alignment.{1} Black suggests that the palisade may have deliminated a temenos associated with a possible temple nearby (see 0531).{2}ü Activity Reference - 1 = WS450 Sources (1) Excavation archive: Rule M. 1968. It was exchanged with the crown in 1543 and granted to Sir Thomas Palmer in 1553.{1}{2} The Archbishops of Canterbury possessed an ancient park at Slindon. It was given to the See by Henry I. It was exchanged with the crown in 1543 and was granted to Sir Thomas Palmer in 1553. By 1962, a large proportion of the old deer-park pale remains in good condition extending southwards and westwards from SU95790855 to SU96160797. Elsewhere it has been destroyed. It comprises a strong, broad bank with inner ditch. The park is now owned by the National Trust. By 1972, it was noted that the perimeter feature on the north side on a north facing slope is different in character as it comprises, in places, three scarps separated by terraces or silted-up ditches. Though undoubtedly the remains of the pale, there is the suggestion of an earlier feature, and the configuration is not unlike the linear earthwork of unknown age and purpose some 1600 metres to the east.{3} Sources (1) Bibliographic reference: Shirley. 1867. The Medieval park, with the Ruelle wood which belonged to it, was situated further to the W., and though contemporary with the castle, had no immediate communication with it. After the new park was formed, 1797, the Medieval park was converted into a farm.{1} The park is shown conventionally on maps of 1646, 1724, 1778 as well as on one of late C18.{2}{3}{4}{5} To the north of Arundel Castle lies the"Little Park," on the north of which is the great or New Park (late 18th century). The ancient park, with the Ruelle wood which belonged to it, was situated further to the west; and though contemporary with the castle, had no immediate communication with it. After the New Park was formed, 1797, the ancient Park was converted into a farm. The Park Pale follows the north side of the road from TQ013069 to SU 978080, turns north to enclose Rewell Wood, ceasing about 997098. Eastern limits not determinable. Conventional portrayal of park. Bugdens map of 1724 suggests the park boundary excluded Ruelle Wood to the west, and its eastern boundary ran to the west of the old London Road. A document of 1635 referring to"the great Park Pale" supports this. Certainly the parks southern boundary was immediately to the north of the Arundel-Chichester road. By 1972, there was no trace of a pale defining the perimeter of Arundel Park as shown on Yeakell and Gardner's map, with the possible exception of a bank and inner (north) ditch overlaid by a modern bank, extending from SU 99240742 to SU 99480741. {6} The park is mentioned in documents from 1299 onwards. {7} Sources (1) Bibliographic reference: Ellis WS. 1885.
