AGENDA ITEM TITLE: Citizen Board Interview / Dorothea Farris ­ Open Space & Trails Citizen ​ Board

ISSUE STATEMENT: Staff has been advertising regularly when there are any vacancies on Citizen Boards. ​ Open Space & Trails has a vacancy in Commissioner District 5 due to the recent resignation of Tai Jacober.

Dorothea Farris has applied for the District #5 position and will appear before you today for an interview. Staff has confirmed that Dorothea does reside in District #5.

Applications were taken until April 1st. Two other people have applied. One will be interviewed today and the other on April 12th.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, applicants for Citizen Boards meet with the BOCC in a brief informal interview. ​ Open Space & Trails is established pursuant to Resolution 90­93 of the Pitkin County Home Rule Charter. The Board of Trustees consists of five members, one of whom shall reside in each Commissioner district. Each trustee shall be appointed for a term of five years, staggered so that one term expires each year. Each trustee shall hold no other county or municipal office, shall not be employed by a municipality or county, and shall serve without pay.

The purpose of this board is to acquire, preserve, maintain and manage open space properties for multiple purposes including, but not limited to, recreational, wildlife, agricultural, scenic and access purposes; and to acquire, preserve, develop, maintain and manage trails for similar purposes

Awards: I have received numerous awards and recognition for public service during and following my work with the Aspen School District, the Colorado Association of School Boards, Mountain Board of Cooperative Services, Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners, Colorado Counties, Inc., and numerous volunteer boards. I was awarded the Freedom Flight Award from the Rocky Mountain Raptor Association for my work in conservation and stewardship. In 2012, I was awarded the Pitkin County Cares, Volunteer Service, Greg Mace award. In 2013, I received the Roaring Fork Conservancy, Robert Billingsley River Conservator award. I am both grateful and honored by such recognition.

Travel: I have traveled extensively in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, in Canada, and in western Europe and eastern Africa.
