Spiritual autobiography is read against the political and religious turmoil that existed in England in the aftermath of the Civil Wars and during the subsequent Restoration. Through a study of four dissenting writers I show how a genre seen usually as a record of spiritual crisis and ultimate reconciliation, was also used as a way of communicating gendered, psychological, domestic, and religious dissent by writers from the extreme margins of society. The argument differs from other studies of spiritual autobiography in that I situate the genre beyond the strict confines of soteriology and adopt an interdisciplinary approach that deploys literary, historical, and theoretical readings. I draw upon the theories of Jean- François Lyotard in order to illustrate a mood analogous to postmodernism apparent in the nonconformist psyche as well as to contextualise the wider dissent shown to exist in the seventeenth century. By applying Lyotard’s concepts of Svelteness, competing Phrase Regimens, and the Differend to spiritual autobiographies by John Bunyan, Agnes Beaumont, Laurence Clarkson, and Richard Norwood this study raises questions with regard to assumptions associated with the genre, the context in which they were written, and so presents new readings of often marginal texts. I also interrogate the literary inheritance of spiritual autobiography: primarily the early novels of Daniel Defoe, and consider the extent to 1 which my reading of the antecedent seventeenth-century mode might affect our understanding of this later genre. The seventeenth-century spiritual autobiography gives invaluable insight into the nonconformist tradition. A literary genre that espoused Calvinist predestinarian doctrine for radical groups like Independents, Fifth Monarchists, and Baptists, spiritual autobiographies present in often stark detail the fear, doubt, and hope that characterised the desperate search for evidence of salvation undertaken by devout men and women in the aftermath of the Civil Wars. The reason for their composition, the manner in which they were written and read, is all bound to the spiritual environment of the age. As N.H. Keeble has written, the nonconformist writer had a very specific agenda and was, ‘above all else concerned about the bearing of his theme upon the daily lives of his readers, and will expend his greatest energies on drawing out its implications for their behaviour. Whatever he writes about, he applies, practically, morally and spiritually.’1 While undeniable, this didactic intent is overshadowed somewhat by the tendency of some writers of spiritual autobiographies to deviate from soteriological matters and – in some cases, inadvertently – present a deeply personal view of the world, explore the often painful psychological crises that accompanied such intense spiritual self-scrutiny, and write with startling honesty about marginalised, occasionally anarchic, sections of society. Far from being a pedantic form of spiritual record-keeping, these autobiographies begin to look more like the writings of highly individual people whose dissent runs deeper than we might have previously assumed. This thesis will identify the forms of dissent alluded to in the spiritual autobiographies of four nonconformists writing in the middle decades of the seventeenth century. I will show how the stylistic model of the genre was used by extremely marginalized figures like Agnes Beaumont and Laurence Clarkson to record not only their soteriological assurance, and 1 N.H. Keeble, The Literary Culture of Nonconformity (Leicester: Leicester University Press) 1987, p. 146. 2 indeed, I argue that the conversion process might not be an authoritative confirmation of grace at all, but also to provide a commentary on the domestic situation of men and women of the ‘middling sort’. This reading will assume a theoretical position based on the postmodern writing of Jean-François Lyotard, principally his notions of the differend and svelteness, both of which would, as I argue, seem to be applicable to the texts and the historical context in which the texts under consideration here were written. Predestination and the Spiritual Autobiography The importance of the spiritual autobiography to the nonconformist sectarian community in the middle decades of the seventeenth century cannot be overestimated. For religious dissenters like John Bunyan, himself a ‘mechanick preacher’ at the First Independent Church at Bedford, written testimony of the visitation of God’s grace would have been a condition of membership of a nonconformist congregation. Indeed, as Vera Camden has said, the doctrines of the Bedford Church were ‘moderately Calvinistic, tolerant in matters of baptism and communion, while adamantly predestinarian in their emphasis on the need for calling and public testimony of conversion for its members’2. The spiritual autobiography met the necessary soteriological requirements by adapting to the Calvinist leanings of the congregation until there emerged a set of conventions to which writers of these religious testimonials adhered. Positioning the Diggers within a Communist Tradition Since their rediscovery in the nineteenth century—first by Liberal, Social- ist, and Marxist historians and then by Protestant nonconformists—the English Diggers of 1649–50 have been successively appropriated; their image refashioned in the service of new political doctrines that have sought legitimacy partly through emphasizing supposed ideological antecedents. In a previous article I demonstrated that recent attempts to incorporate the Diggers within a constructed Green heritage are unconvincing and that at worst these emerging “Green narratives” are insensitive to historical context.1 Similarly, here I want to show how, either through lack of understanding the finer points of Protestant theology or deliberate distortion, most explanations of the Diggers’ implementation of the doctrine of community of goods have been misleading.     JOSEPH SALMON FROM SEEKER TO RANTER AND ALMOST TO QUAKER uring the turbulent years of the English Civil War, a period when politics and religion were uniquely fused, thousands of Dyoung, idealistic Puritans dropped out of all forms of Church life. They were usually dubbed 'Seekers', though they were more likely to describe themselves with names like 'mourners after Sion' or 'Sion's travellers/ These were not the 'happy seekers' that we often find among Friends and elsewhere today, who are often content to dabble among religious ideas and practices, in some cases determined never to 'find' in any definitive sense. The English Seekers of the 1640s were acutely melancholy and even desperate souls, seeking a true Church where they could settle and worship in peace with God, themselves and their neighbours. They were convinced that none of the churches was legitimate. A long, dark night of apostasy had settled over the entire edifice of Christendom, and the many different reforms of Protestantism had not achieved a true restoration of early Christian faith and practice. There seem to have been two principle types of Seekers. These were described succinctly by John Saltmarsh in his last book, Sparkles of Glory (1647).2 The classic Seekers were those who had left all churches and waited in spiritual wilderness for the true Church to be revealed. This would be a restoration of the primitive Church of New Testament times. Only new apostles, with an extraordinary gift of the Spirit, working signs and wonders like the apostles in the Book of Acts, could renew the true Church.

It was under these circumstances that the Ranters, one of the most infamous of all the radical religious sects to emerge during the Civil War and Interregnum, sprang up. The Ranters were notorious for outrageous behaviour such as preaching in the nude and having multiple sexual partners. They were antinomians, meaning they rejected conventional moral laws, both scripture and legal strictures, in favour of what they believed to be divine personal revelation. In the brief period from late 1650 until early 1651, the Ranters were the subjects of a number of polemic pamphlets describing their blasphemous behaviour.1 By the end of 1651, however, following a number of Parliamentary Acts intended to suppress such blasphemies, the Ranters had largely disappeared from popular press and were no longer apparently viewed as a threat. Despite their relatively brief appearance on the historical scene, Ranters have since the 1970s attracted much scholarly attention.

    1 University of Cambridge Historical Tripos Part II Specified Subject PERSECUTION AND TOLERATION IN BRITAIN 1400-1700 Paper Convenor: Professor Alex Walsham [email protected] 2 PERSECUTION AND TOLERATION IN BRITAIN 1400-1700 The early modern period is widely regarded as an era of intensified persecution: it bore witness to concerted drives to eliminate religious dissent and to discipline moral and social deviants; it unleashed vicious outbreaks of sectarian violence and precipitated wars of religion; and it left a lasting legacy of hatred and prejudice that led to the formation of distinctive and mutually antagonistic confessional identities. At the same time, it has frequently been identified as the crucible in which a tolerant society was born: it was a time during which old assumptions about the inherent evils of toleration were debated and contested in pulpits, public discourse and celebrated printed texts, in which kings, parliaments and civic magistrates issued famous edicts that permitted and sanctioned the existence of religious minorities, and in which ordinary people found creative ways of coexisting with neighbours who adhered to different faiths. Focussing on Britain (and especially England), but setting it firmly within the context of wider European developments, this Specified Subject offers students the opportunity to explore the relationship between these competing impulses and tendencies between c. 1400 and 1700. It emphasises the value of forging links between the political and ecclesiastical, intellectual, social and cultural histories of the period and of combining a variety of approaches to the study of tolerance and intolerance in past societies. It will analyse the theory and practice of persecution in the late Middle Ages before assessing the impact and consequences of the Reformation.

  • Seeking the Seekers
    Seeking the Seekers Alec Ryrie* Durham University The Seekers, a supposed sect which flourished in late 1640s England, have generally been neglected by historians, with the exception of Quaker his- toriography, in which the Seekers play a pivotal but supporting role. This article argues that the Seeker phenomenon is worth attending to in its own right. Perhaps deriving from spiritualist, radical and Dutch Collegiant roots, it also represents the logical outcome of English Baptists and other radicals trying and failing to find ecclesiological certainty, and being driven to the conclusion that no true church exists or (for some Seekers) can exist. The article concludes by examining how the Seeker life was lived, whether as austere, apophatic withdrawal; a veering into libertin- ism; or by forming provisional communities, communities which did, in some cases, serve as a gateway to Quakerism. The zoo of religious exotica which proliferated across England in the years of the Civil War and Revolution of the 1640s and 1650s has always attracted plenty of attention, but neither evenly nor even-handedly. There has been a good deal written on the phenom- enon as a whole: how a Protestant culture which had formerly kept its disputes within relatively narrow bounds suddenly exploded into such exuberant, radical variety, and how the majority who did not join these religious adventures responded.1 And there has been much scholarship on individual sects, whether the enduringly signifi- cant, such as the Baptists and the Quakers; the evanescent but eye- catching, such as the Ranters and the Fifth Monarchists; or the small-scale but indisputably fascinating, such as the Diggers and the Muggletonians.
