This study builds on and contributes to work in the intellectual history of Western esotericism, metaphysics, and theosophy. Although studies in early modern religious radicalism have examined the radical ideas of religious dissenters during this period, there has not been a detailed study devoted solely to the ideas of Pordage. To redress this dearth in the scholarship, this study provides additional insight into Pordage’s metaphysical thinking, the part he played in the transmission of Jacob Boehme’s ideas into England, and their subsequent evolution into Behmenism, the name given to the seventeenth-century Christian movement in England based on Boehme’s teaching. I argue that the persuasive nature of the attacks on Pordage’s alleged ‘heterodoxy’ – especially the fierce antagonism of Christopher Fowler – has led to a misleading undervaluation of Pordage’s oeuvre and resulted in the loss of many original pieces; and the ones that did survive did so only after being translated into German, and from German into Russian and Finnish. My major contribution to the scholarship is to provide English re-translations of a number of Pordage’s work’s that were posthumously published in German versions. Other original contributions I make are: • Discovering Pordage’s own doctoral dissertation and providing it in both the original Latin and a commissioned English translation; 2 • Uncovering excerpts from An Epitome of the Angelical World; and • Discussing the reception of Pordage’s writings in Russia and Finland. 3 Dedication This thesis is dedicated to the memory of Professor Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke (1953–2012), late professor of Western Esotericism at Exeter University. Nicholas’ efforts to establish Western Esotericism as a legitimate academic field provided many people with the unique opportunity to study this intriguing area - especially those who studied part time and through distance learning. Elizabeth Bouldin has written a lively, accessible and clear account of an often overlooked aspect of seventeenth-century religious history. Scholars interested in female visionary experience in England are often drawn to medieval figures such as Christina of Markyate, Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe, the Reformation visionary Elizabeth Barton, or modern figures such as Joanna Southcott. The major strength of Bouldin’s monograph is the way it illuminates the messages of lesser-known visionary women: Baptists such as Sarah Wight, Katherine Sutton and Elizabeth Poole, the Fifth Monarchist Mary Cary, Quaker women Elizabeth Fletcher and Margaret Brewster, and the Philadelphian prophetesses Jane Lead and Ann Bathurst. In doing so, Bouldin thoughtfully provides these radical Protestant women with the very things they struggled to attain during their own lifetimes: an audience and a voice. The study extends Bouldin’s work on radical religious networks that transcend national boundaries. Building on her important article published in Church History in 2014 on transnational and transconfessional religious exchanges between radical Protestant groups, the present volume advances similar research aims on a much larger scale. By the early seventeenth-century, a widespread dissatisfaction can be discerned among many awakened Protestants at the suppression of the monastic life and a new interest in reintroducing ascetic practices like celibacy, poverty, and solitary withdrawal to Protestant devotion. The introduction and chapter one explain how the absence of monasticism as an institutionally sanctioned means to express intensified holiness posed a problem to many Protestants. Large numbers of dissenters fled the mainstream Protestant religions—along with what they viewed as an increasingly materialistic, urbanized world—to seek new ways to experience God through lives of seclusion and ascetic self-deprival. In the following chapters, I show how this ascetic impulse drove the formation of new religious communities, transatlantic migration, and gave birth to new attitudes and practices toward sexuality and gender among Protestants. The study consists of four case studies, each examining a different non-conformist community that experimented with ascetic ritual and monasticism.

(II.vii.26-7) The phrase "the operation of your sun" is a distinctly alchemical term. It refers to the opus alchymicum as a whole and is first known to occur in one of the oldest and most famous alchemical documents, the Emerald Table: "What I have said concerning the operation of the Sun is finished."1 The Tabula Smaragdina or Emerald Table, ascribed to Hermes Tris­ megistus or the Egyptian Thoth, was not only one of the most important sources of medieval alchemy, but continued to be considered as the basis of alI alchemical law by alchemists right through to the seventeenth cen­ tury. The earliest known version was discovered by E. J. Holmyard in an eighth-century Arabic text, and it was translated into Latin around the time of the thirteenth century. The first English translation appears as a part of Roger Bacon's The Mirror of Alchimy (London 1597). The con­ tents of the influential Table occur repeatedly in both Renaissance and seventeenth-century alchemical treatises, including John Dee's Monas Hieroglyphica (1564: reprinted in 1591 and included in the alchemical anthology Theatrum Chemicum in 1602), the De Alchemia (1541-Table included in full), George Ripley's The Compound of Alchymie (1591), William Bloomfield's Bloomfield's Blossoms, Thomas Norton's Ordinal of Alchemy (1477), and Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens (1617).2 In Euphrates or The Waters
