S.14 ©2013 erin cobb Task Seven: Make a Lapbook! 1. Cut the two-page article “Screamin’ Roller Coasters” into 8 pieces on the border around each coaster’s section. 2. Glue these 8 pieces separately into the lapbook in Sections A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H. 3. Find the award ribbons you made in Task Two. If you have not already colored/decorated them and cut them out, do that now. Then, place the ribbons on top of the summary of the coaster that is written on each. Staple the ribbons (in a stack for those that have more than one ribbon) on top of each corresponding article so that the ribbons can be lifted up to read the article if need be. 4 Find the timeline you completed in Task Three. Fold it into three sections like it is a letter that you intend to mail. Glue the back of the middle section of the paper only so that the top and bottom of the letter swing open. Glue it into Section I. Do the same thing with the bar graph you completed in Task Six and glue it the say way into Section J. See picture on the right. 5. Find the table you completed in Task One. Cut out along the edge of the perimeter. Then, fold the right edge of the table in so that the back of the edge lines up with the right edge of the coaster column (see photo on right). With the edge folded, you should see the “Coaster” column only. Trace the lines through the back of the paper as shown to make a new column. Then, write yes or no next to each coaster to indicate whether or not you would consider riding that coaster. Finally, glue the back down into Section M so that the new column section still swings open. 6. Find the USA map you colored and labeled in Task Four. Cut it out around its perimeter and glue it onto Section K. Then, cut the Map Key out separately and glue it into Section L. (see photo bottom right)

7. Finally, cut out the cover pieces and color/decorate the front of your lapbook.

T.2 Teacher Instructions, Page 2 Detailed Lesson Plan Instructions 1. Before class begins, check to see that all materials are present. (See list on previous page) 2. Tell students that they will be working on a thematic unit today on roller coasters. They will read about, study, discuss, and analyze 8 different roller coasters. They will be doing activities in reading, science, social studies, and even math. Their end result will be a lapbook about these 8 roller coasters. 3. Have students read the two-page document “Screamin’ Roller Coasters” to get an overview of the 8 roller coasters they will be studying. Either during or after reading each section, show students the corresponding PowerPoint slide so they can get a better idea of what each roller coaster is like. After reading the article, have students choose a different color to represent each roller coaster and outline that coaster’s box (around its article) with the color. They will continue the use of these assigned colors throughout this activity. It might be fun to try to color code using the actual color scheme on the real roller coaster! **Optional: If technology is available, show students the downloaded Visual Companion for this lesson plan to see photos of the roller coasters!** 4. Initiate a discussion by asking students to share their experiences riding roller coasters. 5. Guide students to complete Task One: Screamin’ Stats.. Complete answer keys are included for reference. After completing, check answers and discuss. 7. Next, students will complete Task Two: Roller Coaster Awards. Have the students color/decorate the awards if time permits. Check with answer key. 8. Task Three: Roller Coaster Timeline has two different versions. The .VLS (Version Less Scaffolding) does not include lines and boxes for filling in information. The .VMS (Version More Scaffolding) has the boxes drawn and students simply have to determine which roller coasters go where. Check against timeline. After students have checked and corrected timeline where necessary, have them outline each box with the color chosen for each coaster in Task One. 9. Next, complete Task Four: Map That Coaster! The students should be able to locate each state on the US map for this activity. “Screamin’ Roller Coasters” includes a star pointing out the exact location of the city of each roller coaster within the state. Use this to compete the USA map. Then, answer the questions and fill in the key using the colors chosen in Task One. T.3

Detailed Lesson Plan Instructions 10. Complete Task Five: Kinetic & Potential Energy. **OPTIONAL** Before completing the activity, view the 2 minute youtube clip, Roller Coaster Science Energy, and the 2 minute clip of the Kinetic & Potential Energy Song. Guide students through filling in the notes on the first page of the task and discuss the different points on the roller coaster in reference to types of energy. Then, complete page 2 of Task Five and discuss answers using answer key. 11. Start Task Six: Creating a Bar Graph by having students fill in the information for the table on the first page. Then, guide them through creating a bar graph using pencil colors on the second page of Task Six. Be sure to follow instructions CAREFULLY so that the graph will fit properly on the paper. Check the answer key for one completed for your reference. 12. Construct the lapbooks using the instructions “How to Make a Lapbook” and the optional video clip demonstrating how to make this on the first page of the teacher instructions. 13. Once constructed, follow the instructions CAREFULLY for Task Seven: Make a Lapbook in order to piece together the roller coaster lapbooks. Photo examples are provided. 14. In case students finish early or you need additional activities, there is a crossword puzzle and word search, both with answer keys.
