At the time of writing this article the virus has spread to 25 countries, infected 17,400 people of whom at least 360 have died. (Nelson Mail, February 5, 2020). There is at this time no vaccine against this virus and no antiviral pharmaceuticals specific to this virus. Doctors are treating those affected with drugs used to fight other viral infections such as influenza and HIV. Coronaviruses are widely distributed among mammals and birds, but have now modified over time to cross species barriers. This new coronavirus can now pass human to human. It is difficult to treat because it is an enveloped virus which the body’s defence mechanisms do not recognize as a threat. The disease symptoms appear in the respiratory system causing fever, cough, shortness of breath. It may lead to progressive pneumonia which can cause damage to the alveoli of the lung where oxygen is received and carbon dioxide removed. Protective measures people can take against the current coronavirus outbreak are: * Ensure your immune system is working well - eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables free of pesticides and preservatives, as they contain constituents that are natural inhibitors against coronaviruses.
