2 nelsontasman.nz WELCOME

Tahunanui Beach, Nelson

Where the ordinary is extraordinary Welcome to our home, Nelson Tasman – a place where all the best bits of New Zealand are distilled into a single destination, where Abel Tasman is just one of three national parks, and where a world-class cider experience, consistently high sunshine hours and the clearest in the world are just the beginning. Nelson Tasman is highly connected both locally and globally, a place of surprising diversity, vibrant arts and artisans, with clever city and rural businesses, all thriving amongst stunning natural coastal landscapes and lush hinterland. But we have to warn you: don’t be fooled by a small map – we urge you to allow enough time to experience the richness and truth of this , to carry it with you in your memories. Please don’t rush being with us – if you have limited time, relish the experience of being in one area and fully absorb it. Take time, linger, savour.

“It is the ideal place to live, work and play, wrapped in generous sunshine and a light sea breeze.”

12 nelsontasman.nz HERITAGE, ART & CULTURE

The Nelson Tasman region is home to one of the largest creative arts communities in New Zealand, its artists drawing energy from the spectacular natural environment to create artistic expression reflecting life, the landscape and our culture.

HERITAGE SITES AND MUSEUMS • The distinctive Christ Church Cathedral presiding over the city from the top of Trafalgar Street is built mainly from Takaka marble. • South Street precinct is New Zealand’s oldest preserved street, with historic precinct status. • The Botanical Reserve, at the base of the Centre of New Zealand lookout hill, was the site of the first game of rugby in New Zealand, on 14 May 1870. • New Zealand’s oldest pub is the Moutere Inn, established in 1850. • Founders Heritage Park is a collection of historic buildings and transportation depicting early settlement in Nelson. • Nelson Provincial Museum showcases the cultural and natural history of the region. • The Suter Art Gallery was one of the first permanent structures built solely for the display of art in New Zealand. The gallery is now the country's oldest gallery in continuous use.

ARTISTIC EXPERIENCES • Pick up a copy of the Nelson Arts Guide or the Golden Bay Arts Trail guide at Nelson i-SITE and create your own art tour. • Art galleries include The Suter Art Gallery, RED Art Gallery, Arty 230 and Refinery Artspace in Nelson city, and the Cool Store Gallery in Mapua, although there are many, many smaller galleries and studios throughout the region well worth a visit, often giving the chance to chat with the artists themselves. • National WOW® Museum & Nelson Classic Car Collection. For more information visit Nelson i-SITE, Millers Acre, 77 Trafalgar Street.

Tasman's Great Taste Trail

The Nelson Tasman region is a cycling with rides for everyone. It is home to two Great Rides as part of Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail: Tasman’s Great Taste Trail and The Dun Mountain Trail, and has an awesome range of mountain biking.

The local mountain bike trail network is an International Mountain Bicycling Association Gold Ride Centre, one of only six destinations in the world to achieve this level. For more information, visit a local bike shop, contact a tour organiser or any i-SITE, who can create the perfect itinerary for you and arrange shuttle services. To plan your own riding, visit www.heartofbiking.org.nz.

14 nelsontasman.nz IN SUMMARY:

• Tasman's Great Taste Trail, 175kms. NZ Great Ride (on-going construction to 2021), graded easy. Relish sumptuous flavours from roadside stalls, wineries and craft breweries. Includes a ferry ride from Rabbit Island to Mapua and goes along beautiful coast, plus through the 1.4km Spooners Tunnel. Can easily be broken down into bite-sized portions just right for gentle afternoon rides. • Dun Mountain Trail, 43kms. NZ Great Ride climbing to over 878m. Beginning and ending close to the heart of Nelson city, this mountain bike trail follows an historic mining railway line through a scenic alpine environment and passes through the Coppermine Saddle. • Heaphy Track, 78kms. A remote, multi-day, seasonal ride, that has no equal in New Zealand. The track starts in Golden Bay and traverses to the West Coast with riding ranging from wide smooth trail to technical and rocky track with frequent creek crossings. Check when open to bikers – www.doc.govt.nz/heaphytrack. • Rameka Track, 19kms. This is a ride of two halves. The first is technically challenging through bush and stream crossings, and the second half is fun, flowing single track. • Four purpose-built mountain bike parks: Codgers in Nelson city, Silvan Forest in Richmond, Gorge, and Kaiteriteri MTB Park. These are among the most popular mountain bike destinations in New Zealand and all just minutes from local services. • Cycle trails offer unique and fun cycling to suit all tastes including urban experiences like the Nelson City Centennial Cycleway curving from the CBD through to Atawhai, Stoke Railway Reserve, or Maitai Pathway. For more information, location maps and links to other sites visit www.heartofbiking.org.nz.

Picturesque coastal and inland scenic highways link Nelson city to its rural surrounds. Scattered throughout Mapua and the Moutere area are art galleries, wineries, roadside fruit stalls and gourmet food producers. As the closest town to Abel Tasman National Park, Motueka makes a great base for this part of the region.

• Experience the scenic Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, cycling beside beaches and estuaries, past vineyards and restaurants, art galleries, craft breweries and delightful cafés, and ferry between Rabbit Island and Mapua. • Explore the seaside village of Mapua, sampling the restaurants, brewery, wine bar, boutique shops and galleries located right by the wharf. • Follow a wine trail through the historic Upper Moutere village where you will often be able to chat with winemakers or viticulturists at their cellar door – self-drive or guided. • Uncover treasures at the Motueka Sunday Market.

• Savour the multiple talents of the Moutere Artisans collective – gourmet delights, art in many forms, award-winning wines. www.moutereartisans.co.nz. • Swing a club at Tasman Golf Club Kina Cliffs – charmingly simple and deceptively challenging with outstanding views of Tasman Bay (9 holes). • Drop out of a plane and see the two main islands of New Zealand at the same time – skydiving for unparalleled views over stunning coastline and mountain ranges. The longest freefall in the country! • Discover the Resurgence – take a short walk through lush bush to the source of the Riwaka River, where the water emerges from the “Marble Mountain”.
