Introduction: Tibetans in China In addition to the Han majority, the People‟s Republic of China officially recognizes 55 ethnic minority groups within its borders. The degree to which minorities have been incorporated into the national mainstream community varies widely from group to group, with some demonstrating considerable resentment against the ethnic majority. Most notable are the Turkic Muslim Uyghurs, who made international headlines in July 2009 for the Urumqi riots; the Hui in Hunan province, where unrest broke out in 2004; and, of course, the Tibetans, whose high-profile protests were in to the spotlight in the months preceding the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing. The Tibet-China conflict is one of the most polarized disputes in which China is currently embroiled. At the core of this debate is Tibet‟s status as either an autonomous region of the People‟s Republic of China or an independent country. The Chinese leadership is staunchly against the “legitimate and meaningful autonomy” demanded by the Dalai Lama (BBC News, 2009); the Dalai Lama has also been labeled as a “separatist” by China‟s president Hu Jintao but maintains that he does not want to separate Tibet from China (Mazumdar 2010). Additionally, discontent among Tibetans is not limited to those residing in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). -

Having served as the capital of thirteen dynasties, this city is one of the most important places to study and review the history of China. The third gallery features the culture of the Tang Dynasty as well as artefacts from both the Sui and Tang Dynasties, while the fourth gallery displays a collection of gold and silver artefacts from the Tang Dynasty unearthed in Hejiacun Village. The “Treasure of the Museum”—Agate Cup with Beast’s Head Carving is a superbly crafted jade carving with chic colour. Guokalariju, 5,603 m elevation, and adjacent mountains 15 km to the southeast These mountains of flysch-like Triassic clastic and volcanic rocks and some Mesozoic granite character ize the southernmost part of Northern Xizang Structural Region (Gangdese-Nyainqentanglha Tec tonic Zone), which lies just north of the Yarlung Zangbo east-west tectonic suture 50 km to the south (see figs. 2, 3). Mountains are part of the Gangdese Island Arc at south margin of Lhasa continental block. Light-tan areas on flanks of mountains adjacent to almost vegetation-free flood plain are modern and ancient climbing sand dunes that exhibit evidence of strong winds. From flood plain of Lhasa He, and from flood plain of much larger Yarlung Zangbo to the south (see figs. 2, 3, 13), large dust storms and sand storms originate today and are common in capitol city of Lhasa. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Objective: Based on the environment-individual interaction model and the "evaluation-coping" theory, the relationship between Resilience, Coping Styles, Core Self-evaluation and psychological health of disadvantaged children was explored to provide some theoretical support for psychological health intervention research. Methods: Resilience Scale for Chinese Adolescent (RSCA), core self-evaluation Scale (CSES), Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were used to conduct a questionnaire survey among 618 middle school students in South Xinjiang. Results: First, GHQ-12 scores were negatively correlated with RSCA, CSES, and SCSQ scores (r=- 0.57/r=-0.56/r=-0.49, P <0.001), and positively correlated with the level of psychological health; second, coping styles is a mediator between resilience and psychological health (mediator effect value is -0.04); third, core self-evaluation is a mediator between coping styles and psychological health, there is "resilience — coping styles — core self-evaluation — psychological health" path. Conclusion: Resilience can directly predict the psychological health of disadvantaged children, and indirectly predict psychological health level through chain mediation of coping styles — core self-evaluation. -

This taxon is distinguished from its closest relatives by unbranched paraphyses and asci with truncate or subtruncate apices. The type specimen is deposited in the Reference Collection of Forest Fungi of Anhui Agricultural University, China (AAUF). Key words —taxonomy, Ascomycota, morphology, vine plant Introduction The genusTerriera B. Erikss. was established by Eriksson (1970) for T. clado- phila (Lév.) B. Erikss., belonging to Rhytismataceae (Kirk et al. 2008). Minter (1996) provided a detailed description of the type species. Over the years, however, some species which should belong to Terriera have been mistakenly placed in Clithris (Fr.) Bonord., Dermascia Tehon, Hypoderma De Not., and (particularly) Lophodermium Chevall. (Johnston 2001). Johnston (2001), who divided Lophodermium on monocotyledonous plants into groups A, B, C, and D, regarded Group B species as closer to the type species of Terriera based on their special ascomatal structure. He therefore transferred 11 species and 1 variety of Lophodermium Group B to Terriera as new combinations and published three new species. The author also invalidly published a fourth species, in that work, which he later validly published as T. -

5. People’s Republic of China APRODICIO A. LAQUIAN INTRODUCTION The PeopleÊs Republic of China (PRC) is the most populated country in the world and is undergoing rapid economic development and urbanization. Relevant statistics on the countryÊs development are presented in Table 5.1. Most of the population still live in rural areas. However, by 2030, urban populations are expected to grow by more than 300 million, with 60% of the population living in urban areas. The ability to manage this expected level of urban development will be a major challenge. Significant social and environ- mental problems are already arising from 20 years of rapid growth. This chapter examines some issues facing urbanization in the PRC and introduces three case studies: Revitalizing the Inner City·Case Study of Nanjing, Shenzhen; Building a City from Scratch; and Reviving Rust-belt Industries in the Liaodong Peninsula. The case studies provide examples of the application of good practice in support of sustainable urban development. The final part of the chapter reflects on what has been learned. The PRCÊs commitment to sustainable development can be traced to its participation at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Two years later, the State Council approved the „White Paper on ChinaÊs Population, Environment and Development in the 21st Century.‰ In that document, sustainability as „development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs‰ (WCED 1987) was taken as official policy. The PRC also approved Agenda 21 that spelled out its developmental policies and programs. We put forward the concept of Water Resources Constraint Force (WRCF) and constructed a conceptual framework on it. Conceptual models on the interactions and feedbacks between water resources and socio-economic systems in water scarce regions or river basins indicate that, if the socio-economic system always aims at sustainable development, WRCF will vary with a normal distribution curve. Rational water resources management plays an important role on this optimistic variation law. Specifically, Water Demand Management (WDM) and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) are considered as an important perspective and approach to alleviate WRCF. A case study in the Hexi Corridor of NW China indicates that, water resources management has great impact on WRCF both in Zhangye and Wuwei Region, and also the river basins where they are located. The drastic transformation of water resources management pattern and the experimental project – Building Water-saving Society in Zhangye Region alleviated the WRCF to some extent.
