In Bereishit: “The World That Then Was” (see 2 Pete 3:6), we will examine the creation of the cosmos and of man. We will see the fall of Lucifer and the fall of man. And we will explore God’s plan to make himself and His plan of redemption known through His Chosen People, the Jews. In this course and elsewhere, you will see various ways that the in [the] beginning) is transliterated) ְ בּ רֵ א שִׁ ֖ י ת Hebrew word (spelled out in the English alphabet). Sometimes it appears as “Bereishit” and sometimes, as “Bereshit.” Which is correct? Actually, both are acceptable. Why? Simply said, there is no single standard for Hebrew-to-English transliteration. This manual is designed to be used with the Video Sessions. You will notice that some Video Sessions will cover an entire Lesson, preface some will cover part of a Lesson, and some Video Sessions will span more than one Lesson. The beginning and end of each Video Session are clearly marked in this manual. Also note that Sessions 6, 10 and 17 have been pulled from this course and will be used in another course. In addition to notes to be used with each Video Session, this manual includes an Appendix with materials referred to in the sessions, as well as a Supplement with an assortment of maps and other material for further study. • Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. The translations will follow a series of quotations pertinent to this monotheistic and ,MP3], tạləmūḏiy]תַּלְמּודִ י ,talmudic (Hebrew “instructive”) new religious movement (NRM). Indeed, the first passage quoted below was excerpted from the translated source text for Noahidism: Our Rabbis taught: [Any man that curseth his God, shall bear his sin.

  • Interpretation of the Book of Genesis
INTERPRETATION OF THE BOOK OF GENESIS BY FATHER TADROS Y. MALATY Translated by Dr. George Botros 2 3 4 AUTHOR’ S NOTE: The Word of God is the food granted by the Holy Spirit to the Church of Christ, to let her live continually renovated in spiritual youth; practicing no incapacity of old age or perishability. My good Lord gave me the grace, during the last few years, to study the Word of God, as experienced by the fathers of the early Church, as Spirit and Life. I began by going through meditations and interpretations of these fathers, in the hope that we also would live with the Spirit and thought of the early Church; enjoying, by the Holy Spirit, the Word of God active in us, until it raises us up to our heavenly Groom “The divine Word”, who is to come on the clouds, to grant us the fellowship of His glories, and to enter with us into the bosom of His Father, to be eternally with Him in His heavens. If I did not commit myself, in my interpretation, to the order of succession of the books as they come in the Holy Bible; My goal was not to author a comprehensive series of interpretations, but to enter with every soul into the secret place of the Word, and to enjoy Him as an eternal Groom, who fills the heart and mind and all the inner depths. • The Doctrine of the Philistines
The Doctrine of the Philistines These studies are designed for believers in Jesus Christ only. If you have exercised faith in Christ, then you are in the right place. If you have not, then you need to heed the words of our Lord, Who said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten [or, uniquely-born] Son, so that every [one] believing [or, trusting] in Him shall not perish, but shall be have eternal life! For God did not send His Son into the world so that He should judge the world, but so that the world shall be saved through Him. The one believing [or, trusting] in Him is not judged, but the one not believing has already been judged, because he has not believed in the Name of the only-begotten [or, uniquely-born] Son of God.” (John 3:16–18). “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life! No one comes to the Father except through [or, by means of] Me!” (John 14:6). Every study of the Word of God ought to be preceded by a naming of your sins to God. This restores you to fellowship with God (1John 1:8–10). If we acknowledge our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1John 1:9). If there are people around, you would name these sins silently. If there is no one around, then it does not matter if you name them silently or whether you speak aloud.

  • The Role of the Philistines in the Establishment of the Israelite Monarchy Andrew E
Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies JBTSVOLUME 4 | ISSUE 1 The Role of the Philistines in the Establishment of the Israelite Monarchy Andrew E. Steinmann [JBTS 4.1 (2019): 42–54] The Role of the Philistines in the Establishment of the Israelite Monarchy ANDREW E. STEINMANN Andrew E. Steinmann is Distinguished Professor of Theology and Hebrew at Concordia University Chicago Abstract: This essay examines the portrayal of the Philistines in Judges and Samuel as vital to the establishment of a legitimate, divinely-authorized monarchy in ancient Israel. After an opening section that looks at the Philistines and their origins, the essay examines the Philistines as antagonists in the ongoing narrative concerning the establishment of a permanent Israelite royal dynasty as ultimately achieved under David. It is demonstrated that Saul failed in his responsibility to remove the Philistine threat from Israel, but David succeeded precisely matching Saul’s failures. After David’s reign the Philistines are largely absent from the narrative concerning the Israelite kingdoms—they have become simply one of the surrounding nations. Key Words: Israelite monarchy, kingship, Philistines, Caphtorite, Casluhite, Samson, Saul, David Introduction The establishment of the Israelite monarchy under the aborted reign of Saul and then the successful reign of David was due to a number of factors, not the least of which were Israel’s request for a king and God’s approval of that request (1 Sam 8:1–9). What has seldom been noticed is the pivotal role played by Israel’s main protagonist throughout the book of Samuel as the monarchy comes into being.

  • The Philistines: Bitter Enemy of Israel
THE PHILISTINES: BITTER ENEMY OF ISRAEL SIMON NOVAK From the era of the Judges to that of the Assyrian empire, the Philistines were the arch enemy of Israel. During the reign of Ahaz (740 BCE), the Phil- istines seized control of Beth-shemesh and the Aijalon district (II Chron. 28:18). Even though both King David (1040 BCE) and King Hezekiah (725 BCE) had subjugated the Philistines, they were still a threat to the Judean kingdom even at the time of the prophet Ezekiel (585 BCE) some 140 years later. Ezekiel writes: Thus said the Lord God: Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with disdain of soul to destroy, for the old hatred; therefore thus said the Lord God: Behold, I will stretch out My hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites, and destroy the remnant of the sea-coast. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious re- bukes; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay My venge- ance upon them (Ezek. 25:15-17). WHO WERE THE PHILISTINES? The Bible identifies Abimelech as king of the Philistines in the days of Abraham and Isaac (Gen. 20:32; 26:8). This has aroused controversy, since extra-biblical sources indicate that the Philistines were a "Sea People" from the region of Crete who invaded the Levant toward the end of the Late Bronze/Iron I Ages, a time generally identified with the Exodus and conquest 1 of Canaan. Also, while there is some tension with Abimelech over water rights (Genesis 26) and wife/sister deception (Genesis 20 and 26), these mat- ters are all resolved, and there is no hint of the enmity that would characterize 2 later Israelite-Philistine relations.
