Vranje is economic, administrative, health, educationalandculturalcenterofthePcinjadistrict. CityofVranjeterritorycovers860km²,andconsistof total 105 settlements: urban settlement Vranje and VranjskaBanjaand103ruralsettlements Average longitude 480 m, and climate is moderatelycontinental. Cityis located inthecenterofcommunicationalroutes(CorridorE10), which represent traffic arteries of tremendous international importance. The highway and the railway Budapest passthreekilomeresawayandtheyconnectSerbiawith,aswellasmiddle Europewith. The distance between Vranje and the most economic centres in the country and the nearest surroundingis: Belgrade–347km Prisina–115km Nis–120km Skoplje–91km –285km Sofia215км Bordercrossings with Macedonia are at 35 km (Prohor Pcinjski) i 48 km (Cukarka), and with at74km(Strezimirovce)and115km(Ribarce).

JovanDucic,writer Vranje is economic, administrative, health, educational and cultural center of the Pcinja district consistsofmunicipalities,,VladicinHan,Presevo,,Trgovisteandcity of Vranje. The City is located in the Northwestern part of Vranje valley, on the left side of Juzna Moravariver.Riverandthecityaredividedbyhighwayandrailway,leadingtowardNorthto: (70km), Nis(110km)i Belgrade(347km),towardsouthto: (56km), Skoplje(91km)i Thesalloniki(285km) Positioned below mountains Pljackovica (1231m), Krstilovica (1154m) and Przar (731m). From crossborderwithBulgariais70km,fromMacedonia40km. Thereisnoreliabledatawhenandwherethesettlement,whichfoundationswasbaseforthecityof Vranje,wasformed.TheassumptionsarethatthishappenedduringtheperiodofTrakolir(Romans), Byzantines (Greeks) or Slavics, starting to live in these areas in VI i VII century. One is however completely true: this is extremely important geostrategical area known since long time ago by crossroadsofcaravansasthe"theeasiestroutetooneandanother”,whichleadconquerorsthrough Vranje".

ThefirstwrittentraceaboutVranje,in XIcentury ,was left by Ana Komnina, Greek lady of emperor origine. WrittingaboutroulingperiodofherfatherAleksioKomnin, in book "Aleksiada" she was speaking about Raska sunshiny,whocametoVranjeandconquereditin1093,in his invasive quest. Not for long , he had pulled back in frontofmightyByzantium

SecondtimeVranjewastemporarilytakenfromByzantiumbythegreatRaskasunshinyStefan Nemanjain1193andwasattachedtomiddleageSerbianstate.However,intoSrbianstate,Vranje definetelyenteredin1207whenStefanPrvovenčaniconqueredit.TheCityandparish,duringmiddle agewasruledbykingStefanDecanskiandEmperorDusan. WiththecolapseofSerbianmiddleagestate,TurksinvadedVranjeon14 th June1455,andkept till31 st January1878,onSt.Antanasday,whentownwasliberatedbytheSerbianarmywith commandergeneralJovanBelimarkovic.VranjewasunderTurksfor422years. Town,withinprincipalityofSerbia,waitedforitsfreedomwithmorethen8.000citizens. InBalkanandtwoworldwars,Vranjeandthisareawereagaininvaderstargets. InfirstBalkanwar1912,operationsagainstTurks,weredirectlymanagedbythekingPetarI Karadjordjevic,PresidentofthegovernmentNikolaPasicwithmoreministersandgeneralcourtwith HeadoftheSupremecommandcourt,dukeRadomirPutnik. But,theseareas,were,especiallyinnewhistory,targetofBulgarianinvaders.Infirstworldwar BulgariansinvadedVranje16/17thOctober1915,whileSerbiansoldiersfromThesallonikifront liberatediton4thOctober1918.Thefreedom„waspaid”with514livesonfrontand335innocent shoted. InSecondworldGermansenteredthecityon9thApril1941,andgavethecitytoBulgarianfashist on22ndApril.Forfouryears,theyapp.shot700,interned4.000patriots.App.12.000soldierstook partincombats,956ofthemdidnotwaitforafreedom7thSeptember1944 Initslatesthistory,Cityhasfacedwithnumeriouschalenges . Today, in 2009 City of Vranje bases its development vision on integrative process and modernization. Excellent geographical position and great development potentials contribute to the realizationofdevelopmentvision.

14 CulturalandhistoricalmonumentsofVranje MARKOVOKALE ,theremainsofamedievalfortress,theancientfoundations.Itisassumedthatit wasbuiltbyJustianIByzantineemperorinthesixthcentury.(NorthofVranje,34km). CHURCHOFSAINTNIKOLAS FoundationBalšićabrothers.CarDusanbetween1343and1345,with Vranje,submittedaHilandar.(PančićaJosephStreet). CHURCH OFMARTYRSPETKAPARASKEVI knownaskrstatamosque.Puttingthecrossand crescentatthetopoftheminaret,theTurkstriedtosettlethetworeligions.(streetMontenegro) HAMAM isanoldTurkishbath,builtinthelateseventeenthcentury.ThewriterBoraStankovićoften mentioneditinhisworks.(StreetFifthCongress) PASINKONAK builtbypowerfulRaifBeyDžinićin1765.Thefirstbuilding(NationalMuseum)was selamukroomformen,whilethesecond(businesscenterSIMPO)haremlukforPashawomen.(Street KingStefan) CHURCHOFHOLLYMARRYASSUMPTIONCHURCHSOBINSKA datesfromthemedieval Serbianstate.Turksweredestroyedit,butitwasrebuiltin1820th(StreetHadziToma). CATHEDRALHOLYTRINITYCHURCH in1838wasplacedundertheroof.Withseveraldomes dominatedinrelationtothemosque,forbecauseTurksweredestroyedit.Restoredthe1858thbythe contributionsofVranjepeople.(Milutinovic26). "Meteris"meetsalltherulesandregulationsrelatedtodistancefromsettlements.Itislocated5825m fromthecenterofVranjeand8335mfromVranjskeSpa.Thenearestvillageisabout380m,andthe RiverMorava1.6km.
