Methanol Methanol, Also Known As Methyl Alcohol, Wood Alcohol, Wood Naphtha Or Wood Spirits, Is a Chemical with Formula CH3OH (O
Methanol Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirits, is a chemical with formula CH3OH (often abbreviated MeOH). It is the simplest alcohol, and is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable, and liquid with a distinctive odor that is very similar to but slightly sweeter than ethanol (drinking alcohol). At room temperature it is a polar liquid and is used as an antifreeze, solvent, fuel, and as a denaturant for ethanol. It is also used for producing biodiesel via transesterification reaction. Methanol is produced naturally in the anaerobic metabolism of many varieties of bacteria, and is ubiquitous in the environment. As a result, there is a small fraction of methanol vapor in the atmosphere. Over the course of several days, atmospheric methanol is oxidized with the help of sunlight to carbon dioxide and water. Methanol burns in air forming carbon dioxide and water 2 CH3OH + 3 O2 → 2 CO2 + 4 H2O A methanol flame is almost colorless in bright sunlight. Because of its toxic properties, methanol is frequently used as a denaturant additive for ethanol manufactured for industrial uses — this addition of methanol exempts industrial ethanol from liquor excise taxation. Methanol is often called wood alcohol because it was once produced chiefly as a byproduct of the destructive distillation of wood. Applications Methanol is a common laboratory solvent. It is especially useful for HPLC, UV/VIS spectroscopy, and LCMS due to its low UV cutoff. Feedstock The largest use of methanol by far is in making other chemicals. About 40% of methanol is converted to formaldehyde, and from there into products as diverse as plastics, plywood, paints, explosives, and permanent press textiles. -

Super-D® 3 Diesel Engine Oil 15W-40
Super-D® 3 Diesel Engine Oil 15W-40 Premium Universal Fleet Kendall® Super-D 3 Diesel Engine Oil, SAE 15W-40, is a premium quality universal fleet engine oil designed for use in on-highway diesel trucks and off-highway Engine Oil diesel equipment, as well as in passenger cars and light trucks with either diesel or gasoline engines. It is recommended for use both in EGR-equipped diesel engines and in older, non-EGR diesel engines. It also will provide excellent protection for gasoline engines for use in mixed commercial fleets. Super-D 3 SAE 15W-40 is formulated with advanced additive technology to provide outstanding wear protection, soot control and bearing corrosion protection. Outstanding soot dispersancy protects against abrasive wear and soot-induced oil thickening, and ensures good low-temperature pumpability even with soot-laden oil. High dispersancy-detergency and a high alkaline reserve (TBN) provide extra protection in extended drain or severe service intervals, and in EGR-equipped engines. Super-D 3 SAE 15W-40 meets or exceeds the performance requirements of API Service Categories CI-4 and SL, API CI-4 PLUS, and leading OEM specifications and worldwide standards for diesel engine oils. It is backward serviceable for use where API CH-4 or earlier “C” category engine oils, or the concurrent earlier OEM specifications, are specified. Applications • On-highway diesel trucks equipped with cooled-EGR, ACERT or other technologies to meet 2004 and earlier exhaust emission standards • Older diesel equipment with conventional, non-EGR engines • Mixed fleets with both diesel and gasoline-fueled vehicles • Off-highway construction, earth moving and mining equipment • Farm equipment with diesel or gasoline engines Super-D 3 SAE 15W-40 is licensed or OEM-certified for: • API Service CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, SL • Cummins CES 20078 • Detroit Diesel DFS 93K214 • Mack EO-N Premium Plus 03 • Mercedes-Benz Sheet 228.3 • Renault VI RLD-2 • Volvo VDS-3 KendallMotorOil.com U.S. -
The Difference Between GL-4 and GL-5 Gear Oils by Richard Widman
The Difference between GL-4 and GL-5 Gear Oils by Richard Widman Revision 6-2020 The original target audience for this paper was my group of friends in the Corvair world, but it applies to all cars, and is particularly important for all classic cars. I originally wrote this in 2013. This is the fifth draft of this paper, updating several areas, especially the section on viscosities, based on emails I’ve received. There is a lot of confusion about gear oils and the API classifications. In this paper I will try to differentiate the two oils and clear up the mysteries that are flying all over the internet. It is extremely common, or normal, for all GL-5 oils to claim they cover the API GL-4 requirements for gear oils. This is a true statement. Does that make them satisfactory for synchromesh or synchronized transmissions? NO! They meet the GEAR OIL specifications, not transmission oil specifications. The API GL-4 and GL-5 categories do not mention or have anything to do with transmission synchronizers. History: The gear oils of a few decades ago had lead additives that were effective at wear reduction, but not very good for the environment. A long time ago they began to be replaced by gear oils with a phosphorous additive (in itself a decent anti-wear additive) with active sulfur to grip hold of the gears and create a very solid sacrificial layer of material that could be worn off, thereby protecting the gear surface. Eventually it was discovered that the active sulfur was causing corrosion of brass and other soft metals used in differentials and transmissions. -

FIA Technical Regulations for Drag Racing
FIA DRAG RACING SECTION 1 - JUNIOR DRAGSTER & JUNIOR FUNNY CAR 2021 Specific Regulations for FIA Drag Racing These Technical Regulations provide guidelines and minimum standards for the construction and operation of vehicles used in FIA Drag Racing. It is the responsibility of the participant to be familiar with the contents of these Technical Regulations and to comply with its requirements. It is not the responsibility of the officials to discover all potential rule compliance issues. The responsibility for compliance with these Technical Regulations rests first and foremost with the competitor. Additional safety equipment or safety-enhancing equipment is always permitted and the levels of safety equipment stated in these Technical Regulations are minimum prescribed levels for a particular type of competition and do not prohibit the individual competitor from using additional safety equipment. Competitors are encouraged to investigate the availability of additional safety devices or equipment for their type of competition. In disputed cases, whether an item, device or piece of equipment is safety-enhancing or performance-enhancing will be determined by the FIA Technical Delegate or the FIA Technical Department. Furthermore, as to performance-enhancing equipment, it is the general principle that unless optional performance-enhancing equipment or performance- related modifications are specifically permitted by these Technical Regulations, they are prohibited. Throughout these Technical Regulations, a number of references are made for particular products and equipment to meet certain standards and specifications (i.e. FIA-Standard, SFI Specs, Snell, DOT, etc.). It is important to realize that these products are manufactured to meet certainspecifications, and upon completion, the manufacturer labels the product as meeting that standard or specification. -
