  • The Cross Presents Us with Both Ugly, Beautiful Truths: Sin and Mercy
The Cross Presents Us With Both Ugly, Beautiful Truths: Sin and Mercy This week, as we begin the final two weeks of Lent, we enter into a period formerly called “Passiontide.” One of the options during this time is to have all crucifixes and images covered in veils. This is done until the Triduum, when the statues are uncovered and the Triduum begins. Though optional, I’ve always liked this tradition. We’ll be covering the crucifix behind the altar this week, along with our processional cross. As for why we cover them, it’s to make us think a bit about the meaning of the Cross. We are so used to seeing it we can take it for granted. Some think it dates back to Germany, when in the 9th century a large cloth was extended before the altar at the start of Lent, called the “Hungertuch,” or hunger cloth, which hid the altar from the people during Lent, and was removed during the reading of the Passion on Wednesday of Holy Week, at the words “the veil of the temple was rent in two.” It helped the faithful how to learn about Lent, especially those who were not literate. Later in the Middle Ages, the images of crosses and saints were covered at the start of the Lent; it was during the 17th century that it was moved to “Passiontide,” the last two weeks of Lent. Now it is completely optional. What I like about it is that it helps us to think about how we can take our faith for granted.

  • Pro-Life Film Creators Say Social Media Shutdown Was One of ‘Unplanned’ Hurdles
Pro-life film creators say social media shutdown was one of ‘Unplanned’ hurdles The directors of Unplanned, the true story of a Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life activist, described a White House summit on social media as a needed opportunity for conservatives to discuss how Facebook, Twitter and Google and other outlets are shutting out their voices. Those popular online social networking services are conspicuously absent from the list of attendees. The summit will be held July 11. Writers and directors Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, who talked to Catholic News Service ahead of the event, are the creative team behind Unplanned. The movie chronicles Abby Johnson’s rejection of her role as Planned Parenthood surgical abortion clinic director after assisting in an abortion and watching on the sonogram machine, for the first time, as an abortion instrument shreds a baby into pieces. Abby Johnson After quitting her job immediately, Johnson worked as a pro-life activist and wrote a memoir narrating her life-changing experience, which inspired Solomon and Konzelman to create Unplanned. Nothing about making the film was easy, from casting, to funding, to advertising, to screening, Hollywood and the country vehemently bucking this film’s pro-life position. In a U.S. Senate hearing on free speech and online censorship last April, Konzelman gave example after example of media bias against his film. First the Motion Picture Association of America burdened it with what the filmmakers considered an unfair R rating for two scenes: One shows the sonogram portrayal of an abortion and one shows Johnson herself taking an abortion pill and experiencing bloody hemorrhages.

  • Miraculous Images Found in ‘
Miraculous images found in ‘Unplanned’ When moviegoers left theaters after watching the newly released film “Unplanned,” they undoubtedly took with them some powerful images. Yet, one of the most stirring details likely escaped their sight. It is the “story behind the story,” a detail Abby Johnson was not about to leave out. In one of the final scenes, the actress who portrays Johnson hastily grabs a few personal items before rushing out the back door of the abortion clinic where she served as director. The large plastic bowl that peculiarly had held a spot on a shelf in her office was coming with her. “I had worked hard for them, and I wasn’t about to leave them there,” said Johnson. Within eight years, as she moved up the ranks from volunteer to the youngest Planned Parenthood director in history, the number of abortions on her watch soared to over 20,000 babies. And the bowl continued to fill. Its contents were the remnants from sidewalk counselors and pro-life visitors who had annoyed her with their continual praying outside the clinic — Miraculous Medals. But what had compelled her to dig these medals out from flower beds and bushes surrounding the clinic? “I didn’t know what they were but I knew where they were, and that is what bugged me,” says Johnson. “To this day Planned Parenthood takes trespassing seriously. Now these sidewalk counselors were not technically trespassing but leaving their little medals in my flower beds. It really got on my nerves. I wanted them to just leave us alone and leave the women alone.

Pro-Life Hypocrisy on COVID-19 “ ” Summary Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, anti-choice political leaders have made it crystal clear that they don’t value people’s lives. As NARAL has previously documented, self-styled pro-life politicians and pundits have largely ignored the threat of the virus and failed to “ ” work towards solutions that could protect public health – instead, choosing to capitalize on the crisis to attack abortion access. Now, against experts’ recommendations, these so-called pro-life politicians and pundits “ ” have criticized and defied stay-at-home orders in states across the country. Their latest messaging on the COVID-19 crisis falls into six main themes: ● Prioritizing the Economy Over Public Safety ● Promoting/Attending Anti-Quarantine Protests ● Attacking Social Distancing Orders ● Attacking Health Authorities ● Discouraging / Not Wearing PPE ● Dismissing COVID Death Toll If these anti-choice extremists truly valued people’s lives as they claim, they wouldn’t be telling them to put themselves in unsafe situations during a pandemic. There’s nothing pro-life about deliberately putting people’s health and safety at risk. “ ” Contents Prioritizing the Economy Over Public Safety Gov. Greg Abbott (TX) Glenn Beck Former Gov. So many babies have had their lives stolen by the “choice” their mother made for them. What if your own mother exercised this choice and this “right” while you were in the womb? What if one of your closest friend’s mother exercised this “right” – how may have your life been different? The world could be different in so many ways if each of the aborted fetuses were given an opportunity to grow and strive to be what God intended them to be.

Escape from Abortion: A Review of unPlanned by Abby Johnson PRI Staff / January 10, 2011 I know something about dramatic conversions to the pro-life cause. I experienced one myself some years ago in a Chinese abortion clinic. I had never really thought about what an abortion entailed until I witnessed one with my own eyes. But I could not ignore the result — a dead baby and a mother deeply wounded in both body and spirit — and I turned away in horror. For those who would like to read Abby’s unforgettable story, send a gift to PRI of $25 or more. pop.org | Escape from Abortion: A Review of unPlanned by Abby Johnson | 1 40 Days for Life will be hosting a webcast tonight featuring Abby Johnson at 9:00PM. Register here. I know something about dramatic conversions to the pro-life cause. I experienced one myself some years ago in a Chinese abortion clinic. I had never really thought about what an abortion entailed until I witnessed one with my own eyes. But I could not ignore the result — a dead baby and a mother deeply wounded in both body and spirit — and I turned away in horror. Abby Johnson’s epiphany occurred in similar circumstances, although she was not, as I had been, an innocent bystander to this crime against humanity. Rather she was the long-time director of a Planned Parenthood clinic which, over the course of her tenure, had done thousands of abortions. Abby, in fact, had scheduled the abortion that changed her life. She had joined Planned Parenthood as a college student because she had been led to believe that the organization was dedicated to helping women in crisis.
