Located on a beautiful campus in southeastern Pennsylvania, the College consis- tently has been rated as one of the top institutions in the North by U.S. News & World Report. The men and women who study at Elizabethtown enjoy a dynamic learning environment that engages the mind and heart, nurtures service and leadership, advances personal development and social transformation, and embraces the world of work and the domain of the spirit. Mission Molded by a commitment to “Educate for Service,” Elizabethtown College is a community of learners dedicated to educating students intellectually, socially, aesthetically and ethically for lives of service and leadership as citizens of the world. As a comprehensive institution, the College offers academic programs in the liberal arts, sciences and professional studies. Combining classroom instruction with experiential learning, these programs advance independent thought, personal integrity and social responsibility as the foundations for a life of learning. Founded by members of the Church of the Brethren, the College believes that learning is most noble when used to benefit others and to affirm the values of peace, non-violence, human dignity and social justice. Vision This College is a place of intellectual adventure where boundaries are erased and the excitement of discovering new ideas occupies center stage. Learning occurs inside and outside the classroom. Faculty members are actively engaged in scholarly activity, because the College values intellectual curiosity and this important work informs and enhances teaching. Members of the College community come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and this mix enriches the culture of the campus. Respected for their diverse and unique contributions, community members also possess a sense of common purpose. The Qualities of Our Education Our educational experience blends a high standard of scholarship with four signature attributes, which include commitments to educate our students in a relationship-centered learning community, to foster in our students international and cross-cultural perspectives, to complement classroom instruction with experiential-learning opportunities, and to prepare our students for purposeful lives and meaningful work. 2 Elizabethtown College Elizabethtown College Relationship-Centered Learning Elizabethtown College is a place of people – individuals who live and learn in relationship to each other. At the College, students receive personal attention, as all employees commit to expressing sincere and genuine interest in the educational success of our students. Our College’s classes deliberately are kept small to support our students’ individual needs and challenge them to grow. Our educational programs engage students in ways that capture their most profound attention, confront them with learning experiences that are compelling, and call out from them responses that reach beyond what even they thought possible. In this learning community, our faculty members and other employees demonstrate their passion for their subjects and for continued learning so that our students see how compelling deep engagement is. International and Cross-Cultural Perspectives Students today must be familiar with and understand the interconnected ways of life in the 21st century. When students enroll at Elizabethtown College, they encounter this international world in a variety of ways. Our staff includes faculty members and other employees who are citizens of countries from around the world, who speak a multitude of languages, and who have had myriad study and residential experiences on other continents. Students study alongside students from countries distinct from their own. Additionally, they encounter our international world when they visit, study in or live in cities as diverse as Harrisburg, Philadelphia, London, Beijing and Quito. Elizabethtown offers a globalized curriculum and co-curriculum. Programs of study and student development help students understand and effectively engage other cultures and the globalization of life and work. The College lifts up peace- making as a feature of global education. Experiential Learning Elizabethtown seeks to broaden the contexts for student learning by fostering educational experiences through which students learn by doing. Through this experiential learning, students develop the aptitude to link theory and experience, and they are better prepared to continue learning throughout their lifetime. These opportunities are available through internships and externships, field placement assignments, independent and collaborative research projects, service-learning and community volunteer work, leadership development and campus enjoyment. Purposeful Life Work To enable them to respond to the dynamic work environment of the 21st century, our students are prepared not only with foundational skills for career job placement but also for life-work changes that evolve throughout a lifetime. In both the 2008-2009 College Catalog 3 Elizabethtown College curriculum and co-curriculum, the College’s educational program fosters an understanding of education for a life of purpose based on a holistic model of student development that integrates career development; reflection on vocation, meaning and life; and a commitment to civic engagement. As a result, graduates of Elizabethtown are prepared to make the world a better place. They do so, in part, by living in ways that reflect their individual commit- ments, respond to the needs of others, and value personal and ethical integrity. History Elizabethtown College was established by representatives of the Church of the Brethren on September 23, 1899. As outlined in our charter, the purpose of the College was “to give such harmonious development to the physical, mental and moral powers of both sexes as will best fit them for the duties of life.” On November 13, 1900, classes began for six students in the Heisey Building, located in downtown Elizabethtown.     Elizabethtown College Class of 2012 CLASS OF 2012 The One-Year-Out Report ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Page 1 Elizabethtown College Class of 2012 Methodology This report includes information on the 376 undergraduate students from the traditional residential program who earned a degree at one of the 2012 conferrals: January, May, and August. Information for this survey was collected from multiple sources. Students provided preliminary information on a survey distributed at commencement rehearsal. They were additionally surveyed electronically approximately one year post-graduation. Additional information was provided by academic departments, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and LinkedIn. Through this process, responses were collected from 87% of the 2012 graduates. Outlook for 2012 Graduates According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the job outlook for 2012 college graduates was cautiously optimistic. Employers anticipated hiring 9-10% more college graduates from the class of 2012 than from the prior class of graduates. Still, the 2012 job market was highly competitive, with roughly 33 applications for every one job opening (CNNMoney ). A survey by Millennial Branding & Experience Inc. (2012, May 14) indicates that employers seek to hire individuals who have good communication skills, a positive attitude, the ability to adapt to changes, skills for effective teamwork, and who are goal oriented. Nationally, the average salary offer to 2012 college grads was expected to be $51,000 (NACE Fall 2011 Salary Survey). Compared with their peers without a college degree, college graduates can expect to accrue roughly one million dollars more in lifetime earnings. As this report shows, the 2012 graduates of Elizabethtown College fared well in the competitive marketplace they faced following graduation.

  • 2019 BEA Convention
    Welcome As Program Chair, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2019 BEA Convention. Convention As educators, we draw findings from diverse streams of research to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical approaches to the analysis of media texts and, in turn, to Program Chair’s inform their own production practice. In other words, we strive to teach students not just which production techniques work, but why they work. Be that as it may, prominent industry producers continue to be of the view that media production is self-taught and the role of educators is one Welcome of giving students the confidence and inspiration to succeed. Therefore, if we as educators are to serve as mere beacons of inspiration, what roles do our theoretical teachings serve in the professional practice of electronic media? Does the professional practice of media rely on instinct or on the acquisition of specialized skills and knowledge? The BEA2019 Convention Spotlight, Education and Industry: Mediating the Nexus, explores the issues posed by these questions. To that end, we have an exciting line up of presentations and workshops that aim to increase the dialogue between scholars and practitioners in order to aid the former to build new and expand existing industry relationships; to develop curricula in such a way that the insights gained from theory feed into practice, and vice versa; and to identify research gaps and foster collaborative research projects with industry partners. On the academic side, the Research Symposium examines the issue of what it means to be media literate.
