Rayner Introduction As we all know, the Emancipation was a great turning point in the history of Judaism, although ‘point' is hardly the right word, since it was a long-drawn- out process extending from the eighteenth century into the twentieth. Nevertheless the initial impact of it was often felt by a single generation, and in Germany by the generation of those born during the Napoleonic era. As we all know; too, the initial impact was for many of the newly emancipated German Jews a negative one so far as their Jewish religious life was concerned because the revolutionary educational, linguistic, cultural and social changes they experienced caused them to feel uncomfortable in the old- style synagogues. And as we all know as well, it is to this problem, of the alienation of emancipated Jewry from the traditional synagogue that the Reformers first and foremost addressed themselves. They believed that if only the synagogue services could be made more attractive, that would halt and perhaps reverse w the drift. 0 . _ {:1 j N In retrospect we can see that they were only partly right. There are other 8E}; factors besides the nature of synagogue worship which determine or influence the extent to which individuals will affirm their Jewish identity \ :8 " and adhere to their Jewish faith, and subsequent generations of Reformers 13E came to recognise that and to address themselves to these other issues also. (3 ‘1‘: Nevertheless the nature of synagogue worship is clearly a factor, and a big one.

    2013 ohbucb NIVONIM LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM In so many respects, the Nivonim experience is the culmination of one’s journey as a camper through the edot (divisions) here at Machaneh Ramah. But it is also the beginning of a new journey: that of one day coming back to camp as a member of our summer tzevet (staff). To that end, a key element of the Nivonim experience is the summer-long Nivonim Leadership Training Program. All of our Nivonimers will participate in the Leadership Training Program and will be considered Madrichim B’Nivonim (counselors that are Nivonimers) -- or MiNis for short. MiNis will be placed in one of the many Netivei Manhigut (Leadership Tracks) which will be led by our amazing tzevet (staff). We will dedicate several hours, each week, for training with our nativ (track) leaders, as well as time that each nativ will spend training “in the field.” We are very pleased to offer our Nivonimers eight different Netivei Manhigut (Leadership Tracks). Nivonimers will be able to sign up for one of the following tracks: Rikud (dance), Sports, Tech, Teva (nature/outdoors), Shira (song-leading/music), Camp Programming, Bunk Counseling, and Amitzim Bunk Counseling. Each track will be spearheaded by one member of our Nivonim staff (or another senior staff member from around camp), and each track offers exciting opportunities for the development of high-level skills and leadership experience in that particular area of specialization. Each track will offer opportunities for participants to spend time working with campers in younger edot over the course of the summer.

    The Liberal Jewish Synagogue, 28 St John’s Wood Road, London NW8 7HA July 7th 2020 Dear Ambassador, We write as rabbis and rabbinic students from across the different denominations of British Jewry – members of the British Friends of Rabbis for Human Rights, the rabbinic voice for social justice and economic rights in Israel and the West Bank – in order to urge the Israeli government to abandon the plans unilaterally to annex part of the West Bank in the next few weeks. Many of us have lifelong and personal connections with Israel, through family, through extended residency in the country, through our deep attachment to the land which is so integral to our history and identity as Jews. We are proud to be Jewish, of the ethical teachings of the prophets and the compassion of our rabbinic tradition; proud of Israel’s early courageous history and its current achievements. What makes this creeping annexation of land that should belong to a Palestinian State so unutterably painful is the travesty that is made of our Jewish teachings. If Israel is a Jewish state, then this makes hypocrites of us all. If Judaism teaches us not to oppress, not to disenfranchise, not to stand idly by the blood of our neighbour, then where do we all stand? And where do we stand in relation to Israel’s Declaration of Independence? The State of Israel that was created was to be ‘based on the principles of liberty, justice and peace’. These plans deny those foundational principles of the Declaration. David Ben-Gurion stated: ‘The State of Israel will prove itself not by material wealth, not by military might or technical achievement, but by its moral character and human values.’ The proposed annexation demonstrates an abuse of power and unwillingness to work to bring Palestinians to the table in order to forge a peace plan for all the communities involved.
