ABSTRACT The vegetarian teachings of the Salvation Army, Quakers, the Seventh Day Adventists and other Christian groups have been largely neglected by academics. This study takes a prosopographical approach to the development of modern Christian vegetarianism across a number of Christian vegetarian sects, and some more mainstream traditions, over a period of two centuries. The method allows for important points of similarity and difference to be noted among these groups’ founders and members. This research contributes particularly to radical Christian groups’ place in the vegetarian movement’s modern history. This study demonstrates how and why Christian vegetarianism developed in the nineteenth century and to what extent it influenced the secular vegetarian movement and wider society. It contextualizes nineteenth-century Christian vegetarianism in the wider movement of temperance, and considers why vegetarianism never made inroads into mainstream churches in the way that the temperance movement did. -

But, during the three years he Who Was Gandhi? in England, his main preoccupation was with personal and moral issues rather Who Was Gandhi? with academic ambitions. The transition from the half-rural atmosphere of Rajkot to the cosmopolitan life of London was not easy for him. As he struggled painfully to adapt himself to Western food, dress, and etiquette, he felt awkward. His vegetarianism became a continual source of embarrassment to him; his friends warned him that it would wreck Who Was Gandhi? studies as well as his health. Fortunately for him he came across a vegetarian restaurant as well as a book providing a reasoned defense of vegetarianism, which henceforth became a matter of conviction for him, not merely a legacy of his Vaishnava background. The missionary zeal he developed for vegetarianism helped to draw the Who Was Gandhi? shy youth out of his shell and gave him a new poise. He became a member of the executive committee of the London Vegetarian Society, attending its conferences and contributing articles to its journal. In the boardinghouses and vegetarian restaurants of England, Gandhi met not only food faddists but some earnest men and women to whom he owed his introduction to the Bible and, more important, the Bhagavadgitawhich he read for the first time in its English translation by Sir Edwin Arnold. -

Until infirmity caught up with her, she shops. was also a very regular attender at meetings. Heather Woolf was a nurse; she and Len came to live in Loughton in the 1950s. Heather used to run the AGM, when the President takes the chair, and always had some characteristic peppery comment to move it along. She will be much missed. Donald Pohl was born in South Africa in 1940. After a spell working in a bank, he took a degree at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, and came to Britain in 1972 to take his PhD at the University of Dundee. His topic was the early 19th century Scottish essayist and author, Christopher North. Donald came to Loughton whilst teaching at Redbridge College, Loughton Air Park – Abridge and amassed a huge collection of everyday antiques at Aerodrome his house, Hillside, in Queens Road. -

Reddy Doctor of Philosophy in South and Southeast Asian Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor George L. Hart, Chair The Āmuktamālyada of the sixteenth century Vijayanagara monarch Kṛṣṇadevarāya is a poetic masterpiece of the highest order. It stands out as a landmark in Telugu literary history, not only for its poetic beauty, but also because of the unique religious and political themes embedded within its central narrative. Unlike most contemporaneous Telugu poets who based their works on Sanskrit purāṇas or other Indo-Aryan mythological sources, Kṛṣṇadevarāya turned to the southern Tamil tradition for his inspiration. The Āmuktamālyada is in essence a richly poetic hagiography of the Vaiṣṇava poet-saintess Āṇṭāḷ, or Goda as she is referred to throughout the text. And unlike the great kāvyas of Sanskrit (or even most coeval sixteenth century Telugu prabandhas) that often centered around male heroes, Āmuktamālyada tells the story of an adolescent Tamil girl in love with god. The notion of a female protagonist was surely common to Tamil epic literature, as in the famous Cilappatikāram, Maṇimekalai and Cīvakacintāmaṇi. This geo-cultural shift by Kṛṣṇadevarāya evidences a marked reorientation of the Telugu tradition towards the South, not only in terms of literary source materials and bhakti related themes, but also in a very concrete political sense as the power center of the post- Vijayanagara state system moved to the Tamil country. -

To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/au/ Introduction This book charts the birth of vegetarianism in Australia from the first vegetarian convict to the recent past. It details the growth of the diet, through its religious, health and animal welfare supporters. The major part of the work gives the history of the diet prior to 1948 as this was when the Vegetarian Society that still exists today was founded and there is much available documentary evidence of vegetarianism and the role it has played in Australian society since. Before 1948 there is virtually nothing in the public record. This book seeks to address that missing chapter in Australia’s history. In defining the term ‘vegetarian’ I have used the word to describe people who ate no animal products derived from a slaughtered animal. Many of the people mentioned in this work were what we would now call vegan, but as this word did not exist until 1944 - and so could not have been used as a self- descriptor - it has generally been avoided. In many cases it has been impossible to judge whether an individual was or was not continuously a vegetarian (or vegan), as many people who identified themselves as vegetarians adopted or abandoned the diet as their situations and lifestyles demanded.
