    Next TLARGI Dinner Meeting—April 6, 2010 “Going for Gold” Going For Gold: Al Joyner A star athlete at Lincoln High School in East St. Louis, Illinois, Alfredrick "Al" Joyner went on to attend Arkansas State University. He competed with their track and field team throughout his college career, and by the time he graduated Al was a three-time NCAA All-American indoor champion, a three-time NCAA All-American outdoor cham- pion, a four-time Southland Conference champ and had placed 8th in the triple jump at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. In 1984, Al traveled to Los Angeles for the Summer Games to compete with the U.S. Olympic track and field team. With a leap of 56'-7.5", he became the first American in 80 years to win a gold medal in the triple jump. Al was also honored with the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given every four years to the best American competitor in an Olympic Field Event. That same year, Al cheered his sister Jackie Joyner Kersee as she competed in the heptathlon. When she captured a silver in the event, they be- came the first sibling teammates in U.S. history to medal during the same Olympics. On October 10, 1987 Al married track legend Florence Griffith, later known as Flo Jo. The two met in 1980 at the Olympic trials registration and felt an instant connection. Al later assisted his brother-in-law, Bob Kersee, in coaching Florence to gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400-meter relay.

  • Review of 1986 ======
    REVIEW OF 1986 ============== ACHILLES HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER. During its first 50 years Achilles dominated British athletics, laying the foundations for the national development of the sport, and for today's boom in mass participation. The great spread in the popularity of athletics, fostered by our early Members, has enabled other clubs to surpass our once exclusive position. However, although some would say that admissions policies have slowed the advance of standards, University records continue to be broken. More athletes than ever before compete for OUAC and CUAC, both men and women, and the range of events expand year by year. The 3000m Walk was included in the programme as a scoring event for the first time in 1986, and last year's Oxford President, Tim Berrett, is himself a distinguished walker. This year Cambridge have elected a lady, Allison O'Neill, as their President, and for the first time there will be a ladies' second team match in conjunction with this year's 'Varsity Match, demonstrating the great increase in support for ladies' events since Sarah Owen (Bull) and others worked to encourage them ten years ago. As CUAC and OUAC move with the times, so Achilles is responding to the changing requirements of its members, most of whom have already formed allegiances to local clubs before coming up to the Universities. We acknowledge now that the competitive needs of our active Members are for the most part catered for by CUAC, OUAC and home clubs. However, only about 20 percent of our Members are active athletes, and in this Achilles is unique among British athletics clubs.

    ANNUAL REPORT – INTRODUCTION Dear Bruins, Our department enjoyed an exciting and memorable year both on and off the field of competition in 2016- 17. Ten of our athletic teams finished among the Top 10, nationally. Of even greater significance, 126 of our student-athletes earned their degrees from this university in June and officially embarked upon the next chapter of their lives. Throughout the 2016-17 academic year, student- athletes earned Director’s Honor Roll accolades (3.0 GPA or higher) more than 980 times. In addition, our Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Report (APR) numbers remained high across the board and among the best in the nation. UCLA’s overall GSR of 86% stands two percentage points higher than the national average of 84%. Our football team compiled the second-highest GSR among Pac-12 schools with 88% (the national average for FBS schools is 74%). In addition, six of our teams – men’s water polo, women’s basketball, women’s golf, softball, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball – had a GSR of 100 percent. Sixteen of our 20 sports programs had a GSR of 80 percent or higher. I’ve said it before and I’ll say As a department, we always pride ourselves on team practice facilities for our football, men’s basketball it again – our student-athletes not only meet these accomplishments, but it’s absolutely worth noting and women’s basketball teams, and I know that the expectations, but they almost always exceed them. It’s several outstanding individual efforts by our hard- coaches and student-athletes of these teams are a testament to their work ethic and to the support they working student-athletes.
