General description Skagan is geographically located at top of Denmark putting it at the very top of the European Continent. The Baltic and North Seas meet at the Skagen Odde Spit. At this location one can stand with one foot in the Baltic Sea, and one foot in the North Sea (see photo below).

Skagan is a 600-year old “Market Town” which is described as “picturesque”. Many of the homes are painted yellow with red tile roofs surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Skagan is reported to have several museums, scenic sightseeing, good shopping and excellent restaurants featuring local seafood.

Skagen is a commercial fishing village and fresh seafood is readily available at a variety of restaurants ranging from casual (outside eating at picnic tables) to fine dining.

1200 yards from the Cruise Ship Quay (Terminal) is the Pedestrian Precinct with shops and restaurants along the Marina (see photo below).

Other miscellaneous info

In addition to walking around town and along the Pedestrian Precinct, or visiting Skagen Odde Spit, another noted landmark is the “Buried Church of Skagen” also known as “The Sand-Covered Church”. Rising out of the sands the remaining tower of a once prosperous chapel, this church serves as a testament to the unstoppable power of nature. The church was first built in the 14th century and was the largest church in the region during its heyday. Around the year 1600, increasing desertification began taking its toll on the building. Rising levels of sand began to bury the foundations faster than they could be dug out. The sand also found its way inside the church through every crack and crevice. By the late 1700’s the door was almost completely covered and had to be dug out just to hold services. The church remained open until 1795 when it was closed. Most of the church was demolished by the encroaching sand and weather leaving just the tall main tower which remains to this day (see photo in adjacent column). The Sand-Covered Church has been white washed over the years. The Tower is now owned by the Historic Society and is open for tours of the tower. The view from the tower windows is a reminder of the building that lies beneath. See more photos of Skagen below

General descriptions from various website Note there is also a Kristiansund (with a “u”) port so (consolidated here) when researching tours be sure to use Kristiansand (with an “a”).

Kristiansand is the 5th largest city in Norway.

The new dock is within walking distance to town. On the rare occasions when two ships are in port on the same day, one will be docked across the inlet.

Founded in 1641, every year thousands of visitors come to Kristiansand to enjoy its scenic coastline; fjords and beaches. Kristiansand has more days of sunshine than anywhere else in Scandinavia. The area is considered to be the number one holiday destination in Norway. By charter boats tourists can visit the unique scenery and charming fishing villages in the area.

At Fisherman’s Wharf one can find restaurants, an exciting fish market, and sightseeing boats.

Posebyen on the eastern part of the town center is what is left of the Old Town. Here one can see the historical homes and get a feel for what the village was like in its early days. This is just a few blocks from the current shopping district.

The main cruise ship harbor is on Odderoya Island which is described as “a great place for hiking”. Descriptions from Trip Advisor indicate that in about 3 hours one can have a lovely hike with great views.

There are several fish/seafood restaurants along the waterfront.

The Odderoya Peninsula just to the right of the cruise ship pier is a former military establishment that has been converted into a park with nature walks with views across town or across the sea.

The town’s center is described as “quite compact” and “everything is within walking distance”. (See map with self-guided walking tour below).

Markens Gate is the main, centralized shopping area where there are mostly chain stores, but a few small local shops. Skippergata is another shopping area that has a greater selection of small, locally owned stores.

The Setesdalsbanen Vintage Railway provides a scenic 8 km ride through tunnels, under avalanche shelters and across dams. The cruise ship books the entire train so independent rides are not available – must book the train through the ship. 6/21/2018 10:34 AM – Page 6 PORT INFORMATION FOR 2019 ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE

Port Name: Lerwick, Shetland Island, Scotland Date we will be in port Wednesday, 28 August 2019 Docking or Tendering? Tendering Ship’s posted time in port 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM 6/21/2018 10:34 AM – Page 10 PORT INFORMATION FOR 2019 ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE

Population Population of the town of Lerwick is 7,500, but the majority of the island’s total population of 22,000 lives within 10 miles of Lerwick township Local currency/use of credit cards Pound Sterling (UK Currency); international credit cards are reportedly widely accepted by shops in town. Languages spoken English and a dialect of Scottish that is derived from the Scots dialect brought to Shetland from the end of the fifteenth century by Lowland Scots, mainly from Fife and Lothian, with a degree of Norwegian influence from the Norn language, which is an extinct North Germanic language spoken on the islands until the late 18th century. Temperature range at time of visit The average temperature in Lerwick, Shetland Islands in August is quite mild at 53.24 Fahrenheit when (the typical high occurs in late July or August and is 59 degrees F). The weather in August is somewhat dry with rain periodically. In August the skies in Lerwick, Shetland Islands are somewhat dreary with on balance a mere 3:46 hours of beaming sunshine per day. (Note: When we visited the Port of Lerwick on a previous cruise in 2014 we were sailing just ahead of an incoming Baltic/North Sea hurricane. It was cold, overcast, and quite windy. We were all bundled up in parkas, gloves, and hats when outside.) Cruise passenger facilities in port When we last visited in 2014 there was no cruise terminal per se; we were just greeted by our driver at the pier. I could not find any description of a cruise terminal online, so am assuming that it remains the same as 2014. The pier is right in the center of the downtown or city center area, so shops, restaurants and coffee houses with free WiFi are a short walk from the pier. Transportation near port Local taxi company has cabs for hire for the day – www.shetlandtaxis.co.uk which are also usually readily available at the pier, but can also be reserved online.

6/21/2018 10:34 AM – Page 11 PORT INFORMATION FOR 2019 ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE

General descriptions from various website Lerwick, the Shetland Islands' capital, is undeniably (consolidated here) multifaceted. Superficially, Lerwick's architecture reflects that of its past -- deeply rooted in Dutch traditions with stone-facade buildings, known as lodberries, lining the busy port. Lerwick, like the rest of the Shetland Islands, is more than just superficial beauty though -- and just a few hours in town will uncover a rather fascinating history.

A gift to Scotland from a Danish princess in the late 1400s, the town wasn't actually founded as a port until the late 17th century. The geographic location close to Norway is reflected in all facets of Lerwick -- from many of the store's decor to the people. The locals' warm and embracing personalities are a near-perfect blend of Norwegian and Scottish. The Scottish reminders come when you're strolling through the UNESCO town and see rolling green hills behind tall castle-like administrative buildings and sheep traffic jams in the center of town.

For visitors, there's plenty to do here -- whether you're docking for just a few hours or overnight. With vibrant green-hued hills flanking the beautiful Bressay Sound, be sure to book an excursion that gets you outside to explore the wildlife (like the Shetland ponies) and the stunning scenery. For those visiting on rainy days, the town has museums, restaurants, theaters and more to keep you immersed in the local culture. As a bonus, there are public buses and ferries that can cart you to neighboring islands and other landmarks, like the historical site of Jarlshof. Tours www.toursbylocals.com – none listed www.viator.com – nothing but an audio tour one can download and use for a self-driving tour www.tripadvisor.com – a variety of tours are reviewed https://www.inspirock.com – has a “trip planner” that provides a good listing of the area’s sightseeing Taxis are available for hire with the driver serving as guide for the day at www.shetlandtaxis.co.uk Ship shore excursions -- TBD

It is recommended to have Danish Kroner on hand as ATM machines may not be operational, or not all merchants or tour providers will accept credit cards. Temperature range at time of visit Average temperatures are between 35 and 47 degrees Fahrenheit in September. Cruise passenger facilities in port A souvenir shop and tourist information center is located right next to the pier and is open the whole time the ship is in port. Transportation near port None is mentioned on any of the websites researched so assume that any transportation will be by foot, or hiring a boat tour General descriptions from various website Qaqortoq, formerly Julianehåb is a town in the (consolidated here) Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, located near Cape Thorvaldsen. With a population of 3,089 in 2016,[1] it is the most populous town in southern Greenland and the fourth-largest town on the island.

As is true of all populated places in Greenland, Qaqortoq is not connected to any other place via roads. Fairly well trodden hiking trails lead north and west from the town, but for any motorized transportation all-terrain vehicles are needed. During winter, snowmobiles become the transport of choice. Tours As Qaqortoq gets only about 1700 visitors a year, tour offerings are very limited. The Qaqortoq Tourist Service – Greenland Sagalands – is the tourist office which offers services in English. We should plan on booking an excursion through the ship (early) as options will be limited. There are no tour operators listed on www.toursbylocals.com or www.viator.com. Very few tours are reviewed on Trip Advisor; I’ve attempted to make contact with one of the operators, but they have been unresponsive. 6/21/2018 10:34 AM – Page 22 PORT INFORMATION FOR 2019 ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE

Other miscellaneous info Home to the second-largest natural harbor in the world, it draws a major share of Canada's container trade and oodles of cruise ship visits in the late summer and early fall (although more recently, ships are beginning to visit in the early summer months). A few streets inland, there are many sights to take in, and while gorgeous coastal scenery begins just outside the city limits, especially during the spectacular autumn foliage displays, the waterfront is also a delight to explore.

Halifax also has a strong connection to the sinking of the Titanic since it played a key role during the aftermath of the tragedy. Three of the city's ships were sent out to recover bodies, and so it is the final resting place for many unclaimed victims. In fact, three cemeteries throughout Halifax feature rows of black granite headstones, each inscribed with the same date: April 15, 1912.

Peggy's Cove: Plan a day trip to Peggy's Cove, a rustic fishing village located on an ocean inlet and known for its dramatic lighthouse. Peggy's Cove is about a 30-minute drive southwest of Halifax, so your best bets are to rent a car or book an excursion.

Lunenburg: Check out Lunenburg, a waterfront village that's a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the town was founded in 1753. Lunenburg is about a 57-mile drive southwest of Halifax and features a number of activities for lovers of the great outdoors, including campgrounds, golf courses and sandy beaches. You pass through pretty seaside Mahone Bay on the way.

Bay of Fundy: Rent a car, and drive to one of the quaint fishing villages alongside the Bay of Fundy (such as Hall's Harbour). No catch? No problem: Lobster restaurants abound.
