Heritage Lottery & Churchcare Update – grants and support available to parishes

1. Improving access to Heritage Lottery Fund grants

We are often asked how to go about accessing Heritage Lottery Fund monies. So I thought it might be useful to send you an email you can cut and paste/forward to parishes whom you think might benefit from an HLF grant, not least as from today there is a huge annual £375 million pot that church buildings, listed or otherwise can access through various schemes beyond the Grants for Places of Worship Scheme:

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) is the single biggest funder of heritage through innovative investment in projects with a lasting impact on people and places. From 1 April 2013 it has £375m a year to invest in new projects, which can include conservation and repairs with new works like loos, kitchens and improved heating systems. Alongside the ring-fenced £25 million Grants for Places of Worship scheme, which focuses on urgent repair needs in listed places of worship, HLF operates a number of open programmes that welcome applications from cathedral and church buildings:

• Sharing Heritage – grants from £3,000 - £10,000 (useful for interpretation schemes, producing guidebooks etc.); • Our Heritage – grants from £10,000 - £100,000; and • Heritage Grants – grants of over £100,000

These programmes are for any type of project related to local, regional or national heritage in the UK.

Further details on the programmes and links to the specific programme guidance, including information about when to apply, can be found on the HLF website at: http://www.hlf.org.uk/HOWTOAPPLY/PROGRAMMES/Pages/programmes.aspx

HLF strongly recommends potential applicants read the guidance for each programme, which gives full information about the sort of projects the HLF can fund as well as the outcomes relating to heritage, people and communities that HLF wants projects to achieve.

After reading the guidance and deciding which programme is right for a particular church project, applicants should submit an expression of interest or project enquiry form online: http://www.hlf.org.uk/HowToApply/Register/Pages/registerandapply.aspx This will be sent to an applicant’s local Heritage Lottery Fund office, where HLF teams will be able to give more advice.

Links to the web pages for the HLF regional offices can be found at: http://www.hlf.org.uk/inyourarea/Pages/Inyourarea.aspx

For help from ChurchCare see http://www.churchcare.co.uk/churches/funding-and- grants/other-sources-funding. This page also lists the range of church building projects that have been successfully funded by HLF through their various schemes. Or contact [email protected]

2. ChurchCare Impact review 2013

The cathedral and church buildings division has produced a brief illustrated A4 document that aims to let parishes, dioceses and chapters know what support ChurchCare can provide them in their endeavours to maintain and develop their church buildings. We’ve set this information out under five sections; securing funding, expert advice, open and sustainable church buildings, encouraging innovation and campaigning. Much of this information is on the ChurchCare website, but many parishes are still unaware of that resource.

It was suggested to us that every parish church should have hard copy of this to leave in the church (and of course it will also be available as a PDR that can be downloaded). So we are making a one-off offer to print a hard copy for each one of your parishes and send these to you to at one destination per diocese (the diocesan offices? – please specify where to send to as well as number required), which could be distributed at the forthcoming services to celebrate the election of church wardens.

If this is an offer you would like to take up, can you please email [email protected] or [email protected] by 5pm Monday 15 April, so that the print run can be determined. The Impact review will be available at the end of this month. If a sneak preview will help you determine whether you want to take up this offer, please also ask Pedro or Catherine to email you a final draft.

With best wishes

Peter Hill David Picken Archdeacon of Nottingham Archdeacon of Newark
