THE KLONDIKE SUN WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2014 P5 LETTERS Many thanks from the Food Bank

The past year has been a busy one at the Dawson City Food Bank to meet the community’s need for food assistance. To elucidate, there has noticeably been a peaked increase by those who utilize the service provided, showing that there is ever the demand. None of this would be possible without the grants received from the Dawson City Council and of course the institutions and Members of the Community who take it upon themselves to generously donate food for the cause. We would like to thank and applaud the following donors in alphabetical order:

Bank Leviticus 19:18b: THE Valcourt says YESAA amendments came KLONDIKE SUN from the Yukon Party

The Premier has some explaining to do after Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt said Monday it was the Cathers/Pasloski government that insisted on controversial amendments to Bill S-6. The Premier has had months to be up front with Yukoners and take ownership of the controversial Sign up at changes. It’s a sad day when Yukoners have to find out from Ottawa that it is their own territorial www.klondikesun.com government that is behind these regressive changes to Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act. The Premier’s contention that there was adequate consultation was also called into question by his federal colleague. Join the conversation! The federal minister himself admitted the new amendments from the Government of Yukon came Write a letter to the Sun! after the five-year review was already complete. Attn: Editor It’s very troubling to see the Premier insist there was adequate consultation when he knew that Box 6040, Dawson City, YT, Y0B 1G0 wasn’t the case. Or e-mail us at [email protected] I call on the premier to ask his federal colleagues to withdraw the amendments in order to avoid another costly court case with Yukon First Nations. It is not too late to fix this mess, and the premier could simply request these amendments be withdrawn. More lawsuits certainly don’t contribute to a positive working relationship between different levels of government. I am encouraged by the recent request from Yukon MP to have the Standing Committee for Aboriginal Affairs hold public consultations on S-6 in the Yukon (Star letters, Nov. 28). I have been calling on both the Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada to hold public consultations on this bill since January of this year. I’m pleased to see our MP has finally recognized the value of hearing what Yukoners have to say about this bill. Second reading of Bill S-6 occurred Monday (Dec. 1) in the House of Commons. The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago (seen above) as a souvenir of our lively history. If you want to see page 2 and beyond, check out our website. Past issues are available there for download. Go to http://klondikesun.com. More will be added periodically (heh) when we have time!
