Emmy-Winning 'Newhart' Comic Actor Tom Poston Dies at 85
FOXNews.com - Emmy-Winning 'Newhart' Comic Actor Tom Poston Dies …- Celebrity Gossip | Entertainment News | Arts And Entertainment 05/02/2007 06:34 PM Emmy-Winning 'Newhart' Comic Actor Tom Poston Dies at 85 Tuesday , May 01, 2007 LOS ANGELES — ADVERTISEMENT Tom Poston, the tall, pasty-faced comic who found fame and fortune playing a clueless everyman on such hit television shows as "Newhart" and "Mork and Mindy," has died. He was 85. Poston, who was married to Suzanne Pleshette of "The Bob Newhart Show," died Monday night at home after a brief illness, a family representative, Tanner Gibson, said Tuesday. The nature of his illness was not disclosed. Poston's run as a comic bumbler began in the mid- 1950s with "The Steve Allen Show" after Allen plucked the character actor from the Broadway stage to join an ensemble of eccentrics he would conduct "man in the street" interviews with. Don Knotts was the shaky Mr. Morrison, Louis Nye was the suave, overconfident Gordon Hathaway and Poston's character was so unnerved by the television cameras that he couldn't remember who he was. He won an Emmy playing "The Man Who Can't Remember His Name." But when Allen moved the show from New York to Los Angeles in 1959, Poston stayed behind. "Hollywood's not for me right now; I'm a Broadway cat," he told a reporter at the time. When he did finally move west, he quickly began appearing in variety shows, sitcoms and films. Lack of Ethics Abound
Phillipe and Jorge’s Cool, Cool World: Lack of Ethics Abound Affluenza, Little Rhody-style “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald No shit, Sherlock, er, F. Scott. Unfortunately that doesn’t pertain to the crassest behavior exhibited at times by the Great Unwashed, as the sexual rape and molestation scandal at the (once-) prestigious St. George’s School in Middletown is revealing. The people who run the school seem quite able to descend to the vilest activities possible, one level of hell that isn’t governed by bank account size or social pedigree. This prep school, predominantly for the wealthy (at $56,000 thou a year tuition for high schoolers, we hope we don’t find an argument), has been exposed as covering up or smothering complaints about decades of molestation and/or rape of students. Some of the actions, or inactions, of the school’s administration may well be criminal (e.g., not immediately reporting accusations of rape to the authorities), but all of it is detestable. The administration at St. Groper’s is handling this exhumation of crimes committed by essentially everyone in power at the school since the 1970s with all the grace exhibited by the contestants in Monty Python’s fabled “Upper Class Twit of the Year” competition sketch. Whether it was imposing a gag order on the students who brought the allegations, ignoring their complaints, or quietly cashiering the accused, which includes staff, an assistant Episcopal chaplain and other students, or simply acting as if nothing occurred and the victims didn’t exist, St. -

Favorite Sitcoms
Sometimes There’s Magic By Marilynn Reeves Every so often a new sitcom comes along that rises head and shoulders above the rest. I’m thinking of shows like Carol Burnette, Seinfeld, I Love Lucy, and All In The Family. And back in the mid-1960s, the creative genius of Carl Reiner gave us The Dick VanDyke Show. With a staff of brilliant writers and a cast that included Dick VanDyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie, as well as Reiner himself playing the roll of the producer of the Alan Brady Show – suddenly, there was magic in the air! Rob, the bumbling television writer (VanDyke) was always tripping over himself and getting into hot water with his boss Alan Brady. The same was true on the home front. I can still hear Mary Tyler Moore’s Laura, crying out in her sweet but strident voice, “Oh, R-o-o-o-b!” Later, she starred in her own sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show – another of my all-time favorites. The only thing lacking in her show was … Dick VanDyke! Another sitcom I loved that came out of the 60’s was The Andy Griffith Show. Andy, the sheriff of Mayberry RFD, always played the straight-man to his hilariously incompetent deputy, Barney Fife (Don Knotts). The show had a wholesome, home-town feel, with Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), always fluttering about, fussing over Andy and his son Opie, portrayed by Ron Howard. (Later, after starring in Happy Days, Howard went behind the camera and directed such notable films as Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and The Da Vinci Code.) But what a cute, red-headed kid little Ronnie Howard was! Somehow, his character Opie was always getting into mischief, but that only presented an opportunity for Andy to give him a wise and drawn-out lecture about how he could do better next time. -

Feminism Ain't Funny: Woman As “Fun-Killer,” Mother As Monster In

Rich2 1Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah, USA 2Department of Health Sciences, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah, USA Email: [email protected] Received February 1st, 2013; revised March 2nd, 2013; accepted March 10th, 2013 Whether America has realized President Herbert Hoover’s 20th-century vision of a “chicken in every pot”, there is a television in nearly every home. Powerful and accessible, television programs, whether explic- itly, convey values and messages to viewers and, thus, can play a role in reifying the status quo or affect- ing social change. Given comedy programming’s roots in radio and Vaudeville, it is no surprise that a re- current theme in situational comedies is the “war between the sexes”. Despite a surfeit of studies ex- amining specific programs, however, there exists no comprehensive project exploring how gender depic- tions have changed since television’s proliferation in post-WWII America. This time span is especially important because it is bisected by second wave feminism. Regarding gender, TV shows need not fortify traditional ideals. But how far has television come? Findings from a pilot study employing a Grounded Theory analysis of selected US sitcoms from 1952 to 2004 suggest that, regardless of the progressive na- ture of some programming, the most-watched sitcoms reaffirm mainstream stereotypes of women.
