We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

Together with the families Anthomyiidae and Scathophagidae these constitute the superfamily Muscoidea. Overall statistics on recording activity are given by decade and hectad. Checklists are presented for each of the three Watsonian vice-counties 58, 59, and 60 detailing for each species the number of occurrences and the year of earliest and most recent record. A combined checklist showing distribution by the three vice-counties is also included, covering a total of 241 species, amounting to 68% of the current British checklist. Biodiversity metrics have been used to compare the pre-1970 and post-1970 data both in terms of the overall number of species and significant declines or increases in individual species. Abstract. The spatio-temporal variability of necrophagous fly assemblages in a linear series of habitats from central London to the rural surroundings in the south-west was studied using bottle traps between June 2001 and September 2002. A total of 3314 individuals in 20 dipteran families were identified from 127 sampling occasions. Calliphoridae accounted for 78.6% of all the dipteran speci- mens, with Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, being the most abundant spe- cies (2603 individuals, 46.9%). Using canonical correspondence analyses (CCA) on 72 fly taxa, six sampled sites and 36 environmental variables, three habitat types corresponding to three groups of flies were identified. These were an urban habitat characterized by C. vicina, Lucilia illustris (Meigen) and L. sericata (Meigen), a rural grassland habitat, characterized by L. caesar (Linnaeus) and a rural woodland habitat characterized by Calliphora vomitoria (Linnaeus), Phaonia subventa (Harris), Neuroctena anilis (Falle´n) and Tephrochlamys flavipes (Zetterstedt). Intermediate species (L. ampullacea Villeneuve and P. pallida (Fabricius), located between the three habitats, were also found. Temporal abun- dance of the 10 most abundant species showed fluctuations between seasons, having low numbers of captured individuals during winter. Correspondence analysis showed clearly seasonal patterns at Box Hill site. The species–habitat associations suggest habitat differentiation between necrophagous guilds in this area and may be of ecological value. -

Sampling took place from 2014 to 2018, and specimens are deposited in the IBI collection at CIBIO, Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources. -

Fonseca1,2* Forest habitats host enormous diversity, but little is known about the seasonal turnover of arthropod species between the above- and below ground forest layers. In this study, we used metabarcoding approaches to uncover arthropod diversity in diferent forest types and seasons. Our study shows that metabarcoding soil eDNA and Malaise trap bulk samples can provide valuable insights into the phenology and life cycles of arthropods. We found major diferences in arthropod species diversity between soil samples and Malaise traps, with only 11.8% species overlap. Higher diversity levels were found in Malaise traps in summer whereas soil samples showed a diversity peak in winter, highlighting the seasonal habitat preferences and life strategies of arthropods. We conclude that collecting time series of bulk arthropod samples and eDNA in the same locations provides a more complete picture of local arthropod diversity and turnover rates and may provide valuable information on climate induced phenological shifts for long-term monitoring. Forests are known to be one of the most diverse habitats on earth, providing a vast range of ecological niches, resulting in outstanding arthropod diversity 1. Forests can be roughly divided into two habitats: the ground and the above ground layer, with both closely linked to each other by mutual relationships of the associated abiotic and biotic environment2. Some studies have shown how biotic interactions in soil can regulate the structure and functioning of aboveground communities. -

Jan Ševčík A b s t r a c t: This work summarizes data on 188 species of Diptera belonging to 26 families reared by the author from 189 species of macrofungi and myxomycetes collected in the Czech and Slovak Republics in the years 1998 – 2006. Most species recorded belong to the family Mycetophilidae (84 species), followed by the families Phoridae (16 spp.), Drosophilidae (12 spp.), Cecidomyiidae (11 spp.), Bolitophilidae (9 spp.), Muscidae (8 spp.) and Platypezidae (8 spp.). The other families were represented by less than 5 species. For each species a list of hitherto known fungus hosts in the Czech and Slovak Republic is given, including the previous literature records. A systematic list of host fungi with associated insect species is also provided. A new species of Phoridae, Megaselia sevciki Disney sp. n., reared from the fungus Bovista pusilla, is described. First record of host fungus is given for Discobola parvispinula (Alexander, 1947), Mycetophila morosa Winnertz, 1863 and Trichonta icenica Edwards, 1925. Two species of Mycetophilidae, Mycetophila estonica Kurina, 1992 and Exechia lundstroemi Landrock, 1923, are for the first time recorded from the Czech Republic and two species, Allodia (B.) czernyi (Landrock, 1912) and Exechia repanda Johannsen, 1912, from Slovakia. -

Cheshire Wildlife Trust Heteroptera and Diptera surveys in the Delamere Forest, 2013-2017 by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] on behalf of Cheshire Wildlife Trust Version 1.0 October 2017 Page 1 of 30 Abstract This report provides the results of a series of heteroptera and diptera surveys carried out in the Delamere Forest itself and some of the satellite woodland and bogs. A full list is given of the 460 species recorded and their distribution across the surveyed area. This species list is interpreted in terms of habitat assemblages using the PANTHEON software recently made available by the Biological Records Centre. This showed a strong representation of wet woodland species in the sample. The national assemblages of peatland and decaying wood species were much less well represented but included a higher proportion of rare or scarce species. Of particular note was the find in 3 new locations of the hoverfly Orthonevra intermedia: Delamere remains the only known British location for this species following the original discovery in 2003. The Red Databook cranefly Idioptera linnei was found at Abbots Moss for the first time since 1969, only the second record in the Delamere area since then. Both these species should benefit from the restoration of the Delamere mossland. Introduction In 2003, at an early stage of the Delamere Lost Mosses project Martin Drake was commissioned to carry out an extensive survey of terrestrial invertebrates across the Delamere area1. The bulk of the records from this survey were of beetles (Coleoptera) and true flies (Diptera), but other orders were also covered. -
