  • Outline Xanth--Timeline 1 History of Xanth (Simplified) E. Timber Bram
Outline Xanth--Timeline 1 History of Xanth (simplified) E. Timber Bram -4000 Presumed arrival of the Demon X(A/N)th, plus or minus ten thousand years or multiple thereof, causing magic to slowly infuse the region from the trace leakage of his essence. -2200 Around this time, a colony of human folk arrives from Mundania. It grows for a while until Magicians and Sorceresses manifest. One of the early Sorceresses is the Sea Hag, mostly unknown to others because of her frequent change of bodies. She married at age 10, badly, and survives until 1077, when she is banished to Brain Coral storage. -2100 About this time, Xanth is cut off from Mundania, becoming a true island. -1900 The human colony fails, with the humans becoming assorted magic species through interbreeding or change by magic. Harpies, merfolk, naga, sphinxes, ogres, goblins, elves, fauns, nymphs, fairies, werewolves, and other crossbreeds and variants may derive from this; they tend to be close-mouthed about it, evidently preferring not to admit the debasement of their lineage by human stock. Thus this colony is unknown to history, except by the mute evidence of the surviving species. -1000 The isthmus is restored and limited contact with Mundania is resumed. * The Xanth Interface is established, imperfect. * City of Stone Hinge is deserted. -800 Centaur species begins around this time. -85 Prince Harold Harpy delivered. -73 Prince Harold Harpy exiled to Brain Coral storage. 0 First Wave of human colonization arrives in Xanth, establishing current permanent settlement. 1 Civilized Voles leave their main camp near the Gap Chasm.

University of Cape Town The magical land: ecological consciousness in fantasy romance. The modem genre of fantasy romance is a relatively recent development in popular literature, and one which is gaining increasing popularity. In its contemporary form, fantasy romance has developed from earlier fantasy and romance forms, and a generic base which includes romance, comedy and pastoral can be identified. Conventional fantasy romance is concerned with the defense of a magical land, characterised in terms of beauty, health and balance, from some destructive threat. This concern with the health of the land reflects modem ecological consciousness and awareness of potential environmental destruction. Ecological awareness can be traced through critical analysis of various works of fantasy romance. J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rin~s, as the text which marked the beginning of the modem fantasy romance form, shows the potential for ecological awareness in the genre, although Tolkien' s cultural context of post-war England in some ways inhibits ecological consciousness in the narrative.

  • Sixth Grade Reading List 2004-05
Sixth Grade Reading List 2004-05 Introduction An important goal of the reading program within the Glencoe schools, is to develop lifelong readers who read for enjoyment, understanding, and information. To accomplish this goal, students must have ample opportunity to read food literature both in school and at home. In the intermediate grades, acquiring essential reading skills is important but is only part of the total reading program. The other part involves the enjoyable application of these skills through independent reading. In order to guide students in selecting books, an independent reading list was compiled by a faculty committee. The aim of this list is to identify classic and outstanding literary selections to be read independently. The following list of books is broken into two categories. The first is a list of books taught by the reading teachers during sixth grade. We request that students do not read books from these lists before they enter sixth grade. The second is a list of the independent reading books. These books are excellent choices for students when they are looking for a good book to read.
