In an effort to ensure that all North Brunswick High School policies are aligned with Brunswick County Schools Board policies, we have taken a closer look at our policies, practices, and procedures. In doing so, we have learned that our Electronic Device Policy was not completely aligned with Board Policy 4311. Because of this we have updated our policy to be consistent with the Board policy, and this update was reviewed with all staff and students on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 and will go into full effect on Thursday, March 5, 2020. Three other policies ( Code, Tardy, & Public Display of Affection-PDA) were also discussed with students just as a reminder with the increase in warmer weather approaching. The information that was shared with staff and students can be found below.

Electronic Devices ● Per BCS Policy 4311 Electronic Devices are not to be activated, used, displayed, or visible during the instructional day in any part of the school campus. ● For the purposes of this policy, Electronic Devices at North Brunswick High School refers to (but is not limited to) cell phones, ear phones, earbuds, and airpods. ● The instructional day is 7:35 am and ends at 2:40 pm, which includes transition times between classes. ● Authorized use of electronic devices will be in the cafeteria during the student’s assigned lunch time. o Consequences for violations of this policy: o 1st Occurrence: Device(s) will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the period. o 2nd Occurrence: Device(s) will be confiscated, turned into the Main Office; a parent/guardian will be required to pick up the device(s) after school. o 3rd Occurrence: Same as 2nd Occurrence, plus 1 day of OSS o 4th Occurrence: Same as 2nd Occurrence, plus 2 days of OSS o 5th Occurrence: Same as 2nd Occurrence, plus 3 days of OSS and parent conference ● Refusal to give over Electronic Device(s) to any staff member is considered insubordination (including not leaving the Electronic Device(s) in the classroom when students go to the restroom). o Consequences: ▪ 1st Occurrence: 1 Day OSS ▪ 2nd Occurrence: 2 Days OSS ▪ 3rd Occurrence: 3 Days OSS

Dress Code – BCS Policy 4316 The Brunswick County Board of Education believes that the dress and personal appearance of students greatly affect their academic performance and their interaction with other students. The Board requests that parents outfit their children in that is conducive to learning. Generally, dress and grooming standards as determined by the student and his or her parents will be deemed acceptable. However, the Board prohibits any appearance or clothing that does the following: 1. violates a reasonable adopted and publicized by the school; 2. is substantially disruptive; 3. is provocative or obscene; or 4. endangers the health or safety of the student or others.

A. PROHIBITED ITEMS AND STYLES OF WEAR ● Age-Inappropriate Dress – Clothing must be age appropriate. ● Provocative Dress – Clothing that is disruptive to the teaching-learning process or is indecent, vulgar, or obscene. ● Overly Revealing Dress – Shorts, or shorter than four inches above the knee, tank tops, bare backs or spaghetti straps, shirts or blouses that do not cover the waist and midriff, clothing made of sheer or mesh material or that has excessive holes, or visible Tight fitting stretch pants may only be worn under skirts or dresses no shorter than four inches above the knee. ● – Including but not limited to hats, earmuffs, sweatbands, “do-rags,” or sunglasses worn inside the school buildings. (For NBHS this includes Hoodies pulled up over the head.) ● Bandanas – May not be worn inside the school building or on campus. ● Inappropriate Illustrations – Clothing which promotes alcoholic beverages, tobacco, the use of controlled substances, is of a sexual nature, depicts violence, is racist or harassing based on cultural or ethnic differences. ● Improper – Proper footwear is required for the safety and proper function of the activities or events engaged in at any given time by participating students. (For NBHS this includes bedroom slippers.) ● Improperly Worn Clothing – Inside-out, backwards, unfastened, or otherwise worn in a other than that for which the clothing was designed to be worn (examples include, for instance, unbuttoned bib overalls, unbuckled belts, etc.). ● Gang-Related Clothing or Insignia – Students are not permitted to wear, possess, use, distribute, display or sell any clothing, jewelry, emblem, badge, symbol, sign or other items with intent to convey membership or affiliation with a gang. ● Sags – No sagging pants allowed; pants cannot be worn with the waistband below the hipbone.

● Consequences for violations of the Dress Code Policy: o 1st Occurrence: Student will be asked to correct the inappropriate attire while at school or parent will be called to come to school and replace the unacceptable clothing or student will be placed in ISS for the remainder of the day. o 2nd Occurrence: Same as 1st Offense plus 2 days ISS o 3rd Occurrence: Same as 1st Offense plus 3 days ISS o 4th Occurrence: Same as 1st Offense plus 1 day OSS o 5th Occurrence: Same as 1st Offense plus 3 days OSS & parent conference Tardy Policy ● Students are considered Tardy to class if they are not in their assigned classroom ready to learn when the Tardy Bell Rings. ● Student tardiness is monitored on a weekly basis and they are cumulative for all classes. ● Consequences for being Tardy are as follows: o 3-4 Per Week: After School Detention (ASD) o 5-6 Per Week: In-School Suspension (ISS) o 7+ Per Week: Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) ● Students who are habitually Tardy will have the following consequences: o After serving 2 ASD, then ISS o After serving 2 ISS, then OSS

Public Display of Affection ● Behavior of an overly affectionate is not appropriate in the school setting. ● Consequences o 1st Occurrence: Verbal warning o 2nd Occurrence: After School Detention o 3rd Occurrence: ISS o 4th Occurrence: Students suspended until parent conference
