Acquisition Information The collection was donated by E!Entertainment. Historical Note E! Entertainment Television, or more simply referred to as E!, is an American basic cable and satellite television network; the network is owned by NBCUniversal. As its name implies, it features programming relating to Hollywood and the entertainment world, though its programming has expanded to include reality series, feature films and some series and specials unrelated to the entertainment industry. The E! Entertainment Television Research Department began building its collection c. 1990. Over 20 years, the collection grew to include approximately 16,000 magazines, 3000 books, 4000 newspapers and 25,000 clipping/photo files covering celebrities, film, television, music and fashion. The collection primarily served the needs of the in-house production teams at E! Entertainment Television and The Style Network. Research and production staff members regularly perused the books, files and magazines in search of information to enhance or help develop the content of E! and Style programs. They also accessed the collection for visual elements (e.g., magazine covers, headlines, etc.) to include in programs. Scope and Content The collection represents the picture file collection created by the E!Entertainment Research Library, as well as select titles from the library's tabloid collection. The collection is organized into the following series: Series 1. Picture Files Series 2. Tabloids Series 1.

Shooting the Movement: Black Panther Party Photography and African American Protest Tr a di ti o n s T.N. P h u Abstract: Although the failure of the Black Panther Party has often been attributed to the violence which consumed it, the photographic record suggests otherwise. This paper argues that the movement in fact developed a striking and self-aware protest aesthetic. Moreover, this still influential self-referential visuality emphasized the spectacular forms of defiance, contributing, in doing so, to African American traditions of protest conventionally rooted in the oral tradition. A focus on Black Panther Party photography helps account for how the rhetorical violence which focused the BPP’s protest aesthetic became complexly indistinguishable from violent realization.

  • Bamcinématek Presents Joe Dante at the Movies, 18 Days of 40 Genre-Busting Films, Aug 5—24
BAMcinématek presents Joe Dante at the Movies, 18 days of 40 genre-busting films, Aug 5—24 “One of the undisputed masters of modern genre cinema.” —Tom Huddleston, Time Out London Dante to appear in person at select screenings Aug 5—Aug 7 The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Jul 18, 2016/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, August 5, through Wednesday, August 24, BAMcinématek presents Joe Dante at the Movies, a sprawling collection of Dante’s essential film and television work along with offbeat favorites hand-picked by the director. Additionally, Dante will appear in person at the August 5 screening of Gremlins (1984), August 6 screening of Matinee (1990), and the August 7 free screening of rarely seen The Movie Orgy (1968). Original and unapologetically entertaining, the films of Joe Dante both celebrate and skewer American culture. Dante got his start working for Roger Corman, and an appreciation for unpretentious, low-budget ingenuity runs throughout his films. The series kicks off with the essential box-office sensation Gremlins (1984—Aug 5, 8 & 20), with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy (Galligan) finds out the hard way what happens when you feed a Mogwai after midnight and mini terrors take over his all-American town. Continuing the necessary viewing is the “uninhibited and uproarious monster bash,” (Michael Sragow, New Yorker) Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990—Aug 6 & 20). Dante’s sequel to his commercial hit plays like a spoof of the original, with occasional bursts of horror and celebrity cameos. In The Howling (1981), a news anchor finds herself the target of a shape-shifting serial killer in Dante’s take on the werewolf genre.
