Olds This reading of La Comédie humaine traces the narrative paradigm of the young hero within Balzac’s literary universe. A dynamic literary signifier in nineteenth-century literature, the young hero epitomizes the problematic existence encountered by the individual in post-revolutionary France. At the same time, he serves as a mouth-piece for an entire youthful generation burdened by historical memory. -

I Was Not Dull
What, Me Dull? Listen, one of the reasons those crazy French overthrew me, supposedly, was because I was dull and boring. I want you to know the truth. Just listen to a bit of my life and let me know if you think it was dull. I was born in Paris (never a boring city) on October 6, 1773. My father was Louis Philippe Joseph. He was a member of the younger branch of the royal family known as the Orleans branch. He was probably the richest man in France. Did you ever hear of him? Probably not, because he is better known as Philippe Egalite, which means Philip Equality. You see, he supported the French Revolution to such a great extent that he was elected to the most revolutionary body of that period, the Convention. In fact, he also voted for the execution of King Louis XVI. My father’s vote was crucial because the vote to have King Louis executed was close and passed by only one vote. So you see, he was a loyal son of the French Revolution even to the point that my father was guillotined (the revolution had a reputation of devouring its own children). Anyway, I also supported the French Revolution and fought in important battles. I liked our general, Dumouriez, so much that I followed him right down to the time he went over to the Austrians—the Revolution. I spent a lot of time in exile during the First French Republic and later while Napoleon reigned. Since you are Americans, it might interest you to know that among the places I lived was Philadelphia, where I stayed for four years. -

Life in France before the Revolution In 1789, France was one of the wealthiest and most powerful nations in the world. However, the structure of French society was essentially unchanged since the medieval period. The King, Louis XVI, was an absolute monarch, with no permanent Parliament. The aristocracy and the clergy were extremely rich, but paid no taxes. The taxes were paid by the ordinary people, many of them poor peasants doing backbreaking labour. After the American War of Independence, France sank deeply into debt, so with bankruptcy nearing and a bad harvest leading to food shortages, people started to demand change. PREFACE MUCH has been written concerning Wellington and his famous Peninsular Army in the way of formal history : this volume, however, will I think contain somewhat that is new to most stu- dents concerning its organization, its day by day life, and its psychology. To understand the ex- ploits of Wellington's men, it does not suffice to read a mere chronicle of their marches and battles. I have endeavoured to collect in these pages notices of those aspects of their life with which no strategical or tactical work can deal, though tactics and even strategy will not be found unnoticed. My special thanks are due to my friend Mr. C. T. Atkinson, Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, for allowing me to use the admirable list of the bri- gade and divisional organization of the Peninsu- lar Army which forms Appendix II. A Chronological Particular Timeline of Near East and Europe History
Introduction This compilation was begun merely to be a synthesized, occasional source for other writings, primarily for familiarization with European world development. Gradually, however, it was forced to come to grips with the elephantine amount of historical detail in certain classical sources. Recording the numbers of reported war deaths in previous history (many thousands, here and there!) initially was done with little contemplation but eventually, with the near‐exponential number of Humankind battles (not just major ones; inter‐tribal, dynastic, and inter‐regional), mind was caused to pause and ask itself, “Why?” Awed by the numbers killed in battles over recorded time, one falls subject to believing the very occupation in war was a naturally occurring ancient inclination, no longer possessed by ‘enlightened’ Humankind. In our synthesized histories, however, details are confined to generals, geography, battle strategies and formations, victories and defeats, with precious little revealed of the highly complicated and combined subjective forces that generate and fuel war. Two territories of human existence are involved: material and psychological. Material includes land, resources, and freedom to maintain a life to which one feels entitled. It fuels war by emotions arising from either deprivation or conditioned expectations. Psychological embraces Egalitarian and Egoistical arenas. Egalitarian is fueled by emotions arising from either a need to improve conditions or defend what it has. To that category also belongs the individual for whom revenge becomes an end in itself. Egoistical is fueled by emotions arising from material possessiveness and self‐aggrandizations. To that category also belongs the individual for whom worldly power is an end in itself. -

The title of this 1794 work is: Simon le cordonnier et Louis XVII au Temple (“Simon the Shoemaker and Louis XVII at the Temple”). Once his father was executed, royalists referred to the Dauphin as King Louis XVII. The illustration is maintained at the BnF and is online via Gallica (the BnF’s digitized gallery). Louis-Charles, the orphaned son of a king and—to royalists—a king (Louis XVII) himself, would have been better off had his captors simply killed him. Instead, he endured unimaginable conditions in Temple prison, existing in a room above his sister. When first imprisoned, he was a bright, good-looking child: ...his blue eyes, aquiline nose, elevated nostrils, well-defined mouth, pouting lips, chestnut hair parted in the middle and falling in thick curls on his shoulders, resembled his mother before her years of tears and torture. The social and political histories of the French frontiers are again becoming subjects for book-length studies. Lucien Febvre’s thesis on the Franche-Comté was the model study for his generation, as Georges Livet’s on Alsace was for the next. The depth of research and the range of themes in these works perhaps explains why Febvre and Livet have been left on the shelves by historians of the current generation; but these monuments to scholarship really do explore all the aspects of center and periphery history for the France of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In Boundaries; the Making of France and Spain in the Pyrenees (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1989) Peter Sahlins explores the process by which a general European peace settlement inevitably affected the village communities in the contested territories, in this instance, the Cerdagna. No major princely families, apart from the sovereigns of Spain and France, could effectively lay claim to the region, with the result that, as in some of the provinces in the south of the Spanish Netherlands, diplomats toyed with making what were quite fantastic exchanges of sovereignty, and without regard for the inhabitants. -
The Eructavit Is Generally Linked with Marie of Champagne. I Should Like
淡江人文社會學刊【第十期】 The Eructavit is generally linked with Marie of Champagne. I should like to demonstrate, however, that this Old French metrical paraphrase of Psalm XLIV (in the Vulgate edition) is inextricably linked with Marie of Brabant as well. In pursuing this link, I believe I can explain both the occasion and the content of (Paris, BN) Arsenal 3142, the manuscript generally thought to have been composed for Marie of Brabant. Furthermore, in so doing, I should like to establish a possible dating, as well as an occasion, for the Eructavit and for the Arsenal Manuscript 3142. In order to do this, I should like to introduce the setting in which the Eructavit was written, the people surrounding its production, and the familial ties connecting the existing manuscripts of the Eructavit to the Arsenal Manuscript 3142. I should then like to deal with the form of the Arsenal Manuscript in terms of the Eructavit and the 44th Psalm. Marie of France, the eldest daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and of Louis VII of France, was given in marriage in 1154 to Henry I, called the Liberal, of Champagne.(1) Henry of Champagne was a learned man, a recipient of sermons, commentaries on the Psalms, and liturgical pieces, including ten sequences (Benton, 1961, p. 556). John of Salisbury (who at the time of the Becket case was exiled from England and staying with his friend Pierre de Celle, then abbot of Saint-Remi-de Reims and friend as well of Henry) tells us of the “great pleasure which the Count Henry took in discussing literary subjects with learned men.”(2) Furthermore, Chretien de Troyes, Evrat, Gace Brule, Gautier d’Arras, and Simon Chevre d’Or, all known poets, acknowledge the personal intervention of Henry or Marie in their work.(3) The court of Champagne was well established as a center of learning and patronage.
