INVC,, NCR,, Romaine Rolland, the famous French writer once said that if there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is ! Dipped in cultures and soaked in colours of India, 25th Surajkund Crafts Mela provided a myriad of such dreams under one umbrella. The Mela has manifested in itself a rich amalgamation of diverse sub-cultures which are spread all over the Indian sub-continent and traditions that are several millennia old. While over 500 Work Huts attempted to highlight the intricacies of such diverse arts, the cultural performances, on the other hand, attempted to showcase cultural symbols of various States and nations. The unconditional and undivided attention of each of the artist, craftsperson and day performer have immensely attributed to the success of the Mela. The soaring popularity can be gauged by the ever swelling footfall which is transgressing record numbers every day. Smt. Kiran Chaudhary, Minister of Public Health Engineering and Excise & Taxation, Haryana also visited the Mela today. She interacted with various craftspersons and learnt the intricacies of their arts and crafts. She desired that more languishing crafts of the country should be displayed in the Mela which has always strived to work as the custodian of various arts. The evening in the Natyashala was packed to its capacity for the Bhojpuri artist, Smt Malini Awasthi. Shri N.K. Chadha, Chairman and Head of Psychology Department, Delhi University presided over as the Chief Guest of the event. An ICCR approved artist, Smt Malini Awasthi has toured various countries, including the USA, UK, Holland and Mauritius. She is one of the leading singers of Banaras Gharana and has been known for her distinctive style of singing. A post graduate in Hindustani Classical Music, she is equally accomplished in Ghazal and Sufi singing. She is a disciple of Ji and is one of the favourite singers of Bharat Ratna, Lata Mangeshkar. Nonetheless, the majestic aura of the Surajkund Crafts Mela was enhanced to transcendental levels by her performances. The audience was mesmerized by some of the most spectacular performances by Malini Awasthi and her troupe. The entire Natyashala echoed with the applause on her various folk songs and famous Bollywood tunes which were done in her typical Thumari style of music. Her famous numbers included ‘Raliya barren piya ko liye jaye re’ and `Chalit musafir moh liya re’ which were an instant hit with the jam packed audience of the Natyashala.
