For the next 3 years, your life will primarily revolve around the university campus – and this is where Armidale really shines. For the majority who choose to live on campus (especially in their first years of med), the college system at UNE has a lot to offer, and I strongly encourage you to read through our College Guide on pages 14-22 to help you with your choice. Our med cohort is small with less than 70 people per year, meaning by the end of your first week of lectures you’re likely to know most people’s names and even regard a few as friends – or perhaps even a girlfriend or boyfriend, it’s been known to happen! And over the next 5 years, these 70 people will become like a family to you – bonding over sleeping through ethics lectures or anatomy labs, and over a shared bar-tab at Med Ball! As a medical society, the University of New England Medical Students’ Association – or ‘UNEMSA’, is here for one main purpose: YOU! I arrived having no idea that residential colleges existed. That soon changed. In my first year, a number of fellow female students told me about their experiences of sexual assault and harassment in the college environment. I also witnessed, first- hand, hazing rituals which spilled onto campus, obscene misogynistic slogans chalked on pavements proudly badged by all male colleges and experienced sexual harassment by men who attended colleges. I returned to Sydney University in 1999, where I set up the first Media and Communications degree. To my horror, I discovered that nothing appeared to have changed in some of the colleges. A number of female students in the degree I presided over and taught into approached me for advice about the assault and harassment they had experienced at the hands of male college students.

    Reflections on Robb College in the 1980s Dr Jim Irvine, Master: January 1981-December 1990 Context of Robb College in the 1980s By the end of 1980, there were only 106 student residents in Robb, and fewer than 10 were female. At my appointment interview for the position of Master in October 1980, I was left in no doubt that Robb College would be closed if it could not attract and retain enough students to become financially sustainable. With UNE residential College numbers down for the last few years of the 1970s, it had been difficult to do much-needed repairs and refurbishing to make Robb’s accommodation attractive. At my formal appointment meeting in October 1980 with the UNE Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ron Gates, we reached an agreement to initiate a non-refundable Long-Term Maintenance Levy of $100, over and above residence fees, payable by every Robb resident, enhanced by a matching UNE grant of $25,000 per year, initially for the years 1981-1985: thereby raising an additional $50,000+ each year to fund deferred maintenance, replacements and upgrading work. This was a very generous commitment from the VC. However, this small additional fund each year would not be enough to move the College’s occupancy from half-empty to full in one year. Robb needed something dramatic – something appealing to energetic Robb students, creating high visibility for Robb College in rural communities, and show- casing the determination of Robb students to promote their College and UNE. Evolving the Tradition of an Annual Robb College Charitable Project 1 In 1981, the International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP), we knew of a prospective student, Liz Whittaker, who wanted to come into Robb College, but could not do so because she required wheel- chair accessible facilities.
