Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

From the genre- revitalizing first film to the exceptionally intimate "Days of Future Past," the series has definitely made its mark on the blockbuster landscape. With "Apocalypse," director Bryan Singer returns for his fourth time at the helm. Similarly to his previous outing, this movie is loosely based on one of the superhero team's most popular comic book storylines. Ten years have passed since Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and friends averted the rise of the Sentinels. However, altering the course of the "X- Men" continuity has merely replaced one disaster with another. The world's first mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), was worshipped as a god around the dawn of civilization. Thanks to abilities he has taken from other mutants, he is virtually immortal. Following thousands of years of slumber, Apocalypse wakes to find a world ruled by people who he feels are weak. Namely, humans. Dissatisfied with earth's warring nations, the near-all-powerful mutant sets out to cleanse the world with his four "horsemen." In the wake of this new threat, Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) must lead a young X-Men team comprised of familiar faces such as Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner).

  • Avengers and Its Applicability in the Swedish EFL-Classroom
Master’s Thesis Avenging the Anthropocene Green philosophy of heroes and villains in the motion picture tetralogy The Avengers and its applicability in the Swedish EFL-classroom Author: Jens Vang Supervisor: Anne Holm Examiner: Anna Thyberg Date: Spring 2019 Subject: English Level: Advanced Course code: 4ENÄ2E 2 Abstract This essay investigates the ecological values present in antagonists and protagonists in the narrative revolving the Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The analysis concludes that biocentric ideals primarily are embodied by the main antagonist of the film series, whereas the protagonists mainly represent anthropocentric perspectives. Since there is a continuum between these two ideals some variations were found within the characters themselves, but philosophical conflicts related to the environment were also found within the group of the Avengers. Excerpts from the films of the study can thus be used to discuss and highlight complex ecological issues within the EFL-classroom. Keywords Ecocriticism, anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecology, environmentalism, film, EFL, upper secondary school, Avengers, Marvel Cinematic Universe Thanks Throughout my studies at the Linneaus University of Vaxjo I have become acquainted with an incalculable number of teachers and peers whom I sincerely wish to thank gratefully. However, there are three individuals especially vital for me finally concluding my studies: My dear mother; my highly supportive girlfriend, Jenniefer; and my beloved daughter, Evie. i Vang ii Contents 1 Introduction

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier).

He also stated that what Daken needs in his life is guidance, something that Logan is struggling to offer him. But in order to achieve that they first must kill Romulus. Additionally, Way revealed that Daken's role would increase in and that by the end of Wolverine: Originshis past would intentionally remain open to provide a "fertile ground for years Daken is one of the best things to come out of Originsand what better way to piss off his father? He's an iconic and legacy character attached to a number of cool things in the Marvel Universe, but he really hasn't had a lot of face time with it. So we can really roll up our sleeves and see what we've got there and help create a character. I'm not taking anything away from Daniel Way, his creator, but I am saying once a character gets rolling it's interesting to see him interacting with different types of characters.

Covert Action and Clandestine Activities of the Intelligence Community: Framework for Congressional Oversight In Brief Updated August 9, 2019 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R45196 SUMMARY R45196 Covert Action and Clandestine Activities of the August 9, 2019 Intelligence Community: Framework for Michael E. DeVine Congressional Oversight In Brief Analyst in Intelligence and National Security Since the mid-1970s, Congress’s oversight of the Intelligence Community (IC) has been a fundamental component of ensuring that the IC’s seventeen diverse elements are held accountable for the effectiveness of their programs supporting United States national security. This has been especially true for covert action and clandestine intelligence activities because of their significant risk of compromise and potential long-term impact on U.S. foreign relations. Yet, by their very nature, these and other intelligence programs and activities are classified and shielded from the public. Congressional oversight of intelligence, therefore, is unlike its oversight of more transparent government activities with a broad public following. In the case of the Intelligence Community, congressional oversight is one of the few means by which the public can have confidence that intelligence activities are being conducted effectively, legally, and in line with American values. Covert action is defined in statute (50 U.S.C. §3093(e)) as “an activity or activities of the United States Government to influence political, economic, or military conditions abroad, where it is intended that the role of the United States Government will not be apparent or acknowledged publicly.” When informed of covert actions through Presidential findings prior to their execution—as is most often the case—Congress has a number of options: to provide additional unbiased perspective on how these activities can best support U.S.

The Asmodee Group Studio with its headquarters in Essen, Germany are the first to produce official MARVEL sleeves for the popular MARVEL CHAMPIONS card game. The sleeves are also a perfect fit for all other popular standard-sized card games on the market. Players and fans are able to look forward to card sleeves featuring their favorite MARVEL heroes. The heroes in the core set include Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and She-Hulk. Captain America will be the first hero to star in the extension set. Overall, there will be nine different design versions available from the start. More will follow. “Gamegenic is proud to partner up with MARVEL to create card sleeves for such a fantastic and popular game“, says Gamegenic Head of Studio Adrian Alonso. “Our goal is to enhance the experience of an already excellent game by creating premium card sleeves tailored to any fan’s needs.” One special feature of the sleeves is the fact that each pack contains a clear sleeve for the hero or the villain on top of the art sleeves. The products will be presented just before this year’s Gen Con and will hit the stores during holiday season 2020.
