The geography of the lake Balaton

Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of it’s foremost tourist destinations.

The history of the name of the Balaton The Hungarian name derives from the Slavic Blatna, which means swamp.

The position of the lake • Lake Balaton is located in the center of the Transdanubian region, between the south-eastern edge of the Bakony mountains, the region of the Transdanubian hills and countryside of Mezőföld. The Balaton is located about 100 km southwest of Budapest

• The southern shore of the lake is flat, the north is bordered by the foothills of the Bakony mountains and vineyards of Badacsony.

The Kis-Balaton • The Kis-Balaton (it. Small Balaton) is located south-west of Lake Balaton real. Once part of the lake, until it was cut off due to the lowering of the surface of the water.

The Zala • The Zala River is with its 138 kilometers. Zala is one of the smaller rivers in Hungary, however, is the main tributary of Lake Balaton. The Sio

THE HISTORY • It was settled in the Iron Age by the Romans who called the lake Pelso. The early magyar’s thought that Lake Balaton is a reliable source of water, fish, and ice in winter.In the 16th century lake served as the divide between the turks who occupied the southern shore.

• Once there was a giant named Balaton who lived here happily with his daugheter , Halap. when her playmate left her , halap died of grief. when balaton lifted an enormous rock for her gravestone , he was buried under it. Water sponted up in the stone’s place , and the locals name is Lake Balaton.

TIHANY

• Tihany is one of th famous cities on the Balaton. Tihany is famous for the echo, existing since the 18th century. There were poems written for this echo, like by Mihály Csokonai Vitéz and Mihály Vörösmarty, but the most famous is by János Garay, summing up the legend of the place

• Between 1820-1848 there was the golden age of the hungarian writers. ther were a lot of famous writers like Berzsenyi, Pázmándi Horváth and the others. There were a lot of politicians like Lajos Kossuth, Istvan Szechenyi or Wesselenyi. lake balaton was the first place where steamer was tried by Kisfaludy .
