The review flick is set to run down a movie palace in Worcester, Massachusetts and follows three low-paid movie bailiffs, Avery, Sam and Rose (who also runs a film projector) who do the humdrum and tedious labor needed to keep it running, including working hard to clean up the spilled soda from the floors. The comedy show is mundane delivered in bits of conversation that can be considered insignificant. Sam Gold said Baker's comedy letter was clever and surprisingly understated. Gold added that the rhythm, meter and tempo of the dialogue were crucial to comedy. Running for three hours, the show received complaints about its duration. Acknowledging the dissonance, Playwrights Horizons artistic director Tim Sanford sent a letter to some subscribers, acknowledging the anxiety but finding it outweighed by the praises of others. concluded that there was no need to edit the playback down. StageGrade's critical response gives a median critical rating for the BH flick based on 22 reviews. Despite doubts about the length of the play, the characters are said to be rich and dialogue nuanced and entertaining. The lack of traditional theatrics is seen by some as a force and by others as a weakness. Charles Isherwood, writing for , described Baker as one of the most impressive playwrights from the off-Broadway scene of his generation and noted that she writes with tenderness and sharp understanding. John Del Signor, reviewing the play in Gothamist, praised Baker for capturing the stoppage-stopping, shy folk language of the cerebral but unattainable twenty-something suburban. Although Del Signor noted that the significance of some elements of Baker's presentation was difficult to take stock of, he noted that three wrong misses in each other's isolated bubbles and of them, making contact in any way, they can alleviate the oppressive severity of their tasks. Jesse Green acknowledged the need for brevity and clarity in his review for New York, and wrote: No one does anything that is generally considered theatrical. ... So what happens in the flick? Lots of sweeping and stripping floors of a grotty old movie house near Worcester, Massachusetts. It's also the most tender drama-funny, heartbreaking, quiet, and unblinking-now playing in the theater near you. ... It's supernatural; rarely has so much feeling been extracted from so little content. Something is lost in the process, of course: brevity. In a article, Robert Simonson noted that despite its long, static desperation for some viewers, the show was a great theatrical experience for serious theatergoers, who struck them with existential minutiae presented by three performers who would explore these themes. Critics of The New York Times in 2018 called The Flick the third-largest American play in 25 years. The following year, The Guardian's writers ranked fourth on the list of best theatre works since 2000. The play won the Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for drama; The Pulitzer Committee said the play is a thoughtful drama with well-designed characters that focuses on three employees of a Massachusetts art-house theater that makes life rarely seen on stage. Baker was awarded the 2013 Susan Smith Blackburn Award and the 2013 Obi Award for the play. The play received a Nomination for the for Outstanding Play, Outstanding Male Performance (Aaron Clifton Moten) and Outstanding Set Design. A Pulitzer Prize-winning drama in 2014, Flick is a rich and daring feat of hyperrealism that follows three young employees of a dilapidated movie theater. Small loves and petty crimes become epic under Baker's intensely oriented gaze as the play slowly and quietly explores issues of race, class, sexuality, capitalism and technology. More than most playwrights working today, Ms. Baker is really interested in holding the proverbial Shakespearean mirror up to nature to highlight how we treat each other and how we communicate and not communicate. - The New York Times Presented by Special Arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
