The sole bulwark against the flood of fake news. Lying at the very core of Prix Italia 2017 is thinking about the sound and crucial work to be done in order to stop incorrect, uncontrolled or altogether invented news. Doing this in Milan means exchanging views on the required commitment, professionality and responsibility in the productive heart of Italy and indeed of Europe. It is a huge concern: fake news is assailing bulletins and swamping public debate. The truth blurs in the war of ideas. Journalists versus social networks, traditional media versus internet platforms, politicians versus television and newspapers. Some search for news and some alternative facts. Not simply journalism, but the entire democratic system is in peril. Fake news has always been there, manipulating reality has always been an objective of power. Yet today there is a variant that instils even more fear, at least that is until it has been mastered. It is the latest technology which changes the way the news is used and unleashes never-ending reverberations of distorted or carefully contrived news. However, our enemy is not technology. Rather, smartphones, tablets, social networks are exceptional tools in order to be informed and understand. The war is on content, the problem is who produces it and who handles it for their own gain or so as to create consensus. One has to realise that each time we go on the Web, we leave an indelible footprint. By searching on Google, sharing on Facebook or quite simply by making a purchase on Amazon. All this information is a gold mine. Once translated into algorithms it serves to orient our purchases, although even to influence, shape our political decisions. This should not frighten us, but raise our guard, our monitoring of the quality of the information produced, offering tools facilitating insight and sharpening our critical sense. Public Service’s role is this: assuring a good quality flow of news, guaranteeing correct and reliable information addressing an audience as broad as it is accessible on various platforms. It is a firm, continuous commitment that we have come to celebrate here in Milan at Prix Italia 2017 together with our partners and the media worldwide. A memento for the news world. MONICA MAGGIONI PRESIDENTE RAI 6 PRIX ITALIA 2017 WWW.PRIXITALIA.RAI.IT WELCOME TO MILAN, WELCOME TO PRIX ITALIA It is a great privilege to have been elected to serve as President of the Prix Italia in this its 69th year. As a radio and television programme maker for more than 40 of those years, I know the warmth, affection and respect in which the Prix is held by broadcasters all over the world and I am delighted to welcome jurors, delegates and guest participants to this edition in Milan. And not only are we in Milan we are in the heart of the city with events in and around the Piazza del Duomo. A dazzling array of programmes has been entered in the competition and the juries will have some hard work to do over the coming days.

CEPS Working Document No. 148 The Future of the Caucasus after the Second Chechen War Papers from a Brainstorming Conference held at CEPS 27-28 January 2000 Edited by Michael Emerson and Nathalie Tocci July 2000 A Short Introduction to the Chechen Problem Alexandru Liono1 Abstract The problems surrounding the Chechen conflict are indeed many and difficult to tackle. This paper aims at unveiling some of the mysteries covering the issue of so-called “Islamic fundamentalism” in Chechnya. A comparison of the native Sufi branch of Islam and the imported Wahhaby ideology is made, in order to discover the contradictions and the conflicts that the spreading of the latter inflicted in the Chechen society. Furthermore, the paper investigates the main challenges President Aslan Maskhadov was facing at the beginning of his mandate, and the way he managed to cope with them. The paper does not attempt to cover all the aspects of the Chechen problem; nevertheless, a quick enumeration of other factors influencing the developments in Chechnya in the past three years is made. 1 Research assistant Danish Institute of International Affairs (DUPI) 1 1. Introduction To address the issues of stability in North Caucasus in general and in Chechnya in particular is a difficult task. The factors that have contributed to the start of the first and of the second armed conflicts in Chechnya are indeed many. History, politics, economy, traditions, religion, all of them contributed to a certain extent to the launch of what began as an anti-terrorist operation and became a full scale armed conflict. The narrow framework of this presentation does not allow for an exhaustive analysis of the Russian- Chechen relations and of the permanent tensions that existed there during the known history of that part of North Caucasus.

  • Refashioning the Sociopolitical in Spanish Modernist Literature (1902-1914)
Refashioning the Sociopolitical in Spanish Modernist Literature (1902-1914) By Ricardo Lopez A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages and Literatures and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Dru Dougherty, Chair Professor Ivonne del Valle Professor Robert Kaufman Fall 2015 Abstract Refashioning the Sociopolitical in Spanish Modernist Literature (1902-1914) by Ricardo Lopez Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages and Literatures with a Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Dru Dougherty, Chair In this dissertation I argue that the modernist breakthroughs achieved by José Martínez Ruiz’s La voluntad (1902), Ramón del Valle-Inclán’s Sonata de otoño (1902), and Miguel de Unamuno’s Niebla (1914) emerged as a response to the shortsightedness of the revolutionary politics that had taken root in Restoration Spain. I examine how these writers take the historical materials of their sociopolitical world—its tropes and uses of language—and reconstellate them as artworks in which the familiar becomes estranged and reveals truths that have been obscured by the ideological myopia of Spain’s radicalized intellectuals. Accordingly, I demonstrate that the tropes, language, and images that constitute La voluntad, Niebla, and Sonata de otoño have within them a historical sediment that turns these seemingly apolitical works into an “afterimage” of Spain’s sociopolitical reality. Thus I show how sociopolitical critiques materialize out of the dialectic between historical materials and their artistic handling. Although La voluntad, Sonata de otoño, and Niebla seem to eschew political themes, I contend that they are the product of their authors’ keen understanding of the politics of their moment.

Children play a central role in the genre of realism, from Charles Dickens, to Emily Brönte, and Henry James. Galdós follows in this tradition, but sets his work apart by placing the child at the margin of the stories he tells, rather than as protagonists. While critics have tended to view these marginalized children as either verifications of social issues contemporary to the novelist or as symbols that underscore themes, this dissertation analyzes children by considering how they socially affect adults and how characters perceive them.

  • Helena Araújo, El Devenir Afuera: De La Colonia Al Exilio, De La Confesión a La Auto-Ficción
Sánchez 1 Helena Araújo, el devenir afuera: de la Colonia al exilio, de la confesión a la auto-ficción A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School Of the University of Cincinnati In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures Of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences By María Clemencia Sánchez B.A., Education and Languages Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia, 1995 M.A., Hispanic Literature University of Cincinnati, 2008 Committee Chair: Dr. Armando Romero Sánchez 2 Abstract Divided into three chapters, my Ph.D. Dissertation, entitled “Helena Araújo, el devenir afuera: de la Colonia al exilio, de la confesión a la auto-ficción,” examines how Araújo’s work is organized around the spatial-temporal discontinuity provoked by the exile of the feminine character. Using Gilles Deleuze’s concept of ‘rhizome’, this dissertation seeks to demonstrate how the feminine character could become-other on the condition that she changes territory by moving from the Colony to the exile. The first chapter is a revision of the symbolic formation of the Colony drawn as a territory of control in a corpus of literary women’s works in Colombia from 18th to 20th centuries. The goal of this revision is to illustrate the symmetry between the confessional narrative modes and the controlling structure of the Colony. The second chapter defines and analyzes the first movement of Araújo’s work: from the Colony to the exile. In this chapter I seek to demonstrate how the exile’s distance changes the representation of a same place.
