When Love Comes to Town __________________________________________________ When Love Comes To Town When love comes to town TURN: John 12 INTRO: John 3:16 is probably the most famous verse in the Bible − It’s printed on the bottom of the In-N-Out soda cups − It’s printed on the bags from Forever 21 − During the ‘80’s you couldn’t watch a nationally televised football game proudly displaying a sign that said John 3:16 − This verse has been called the “gospel in a nutshell” − It tells us of God’s love for man and what He did about it − It tells us God’s motivation for sending Jesus – For God so loved the world that He gave − It tells us His intention for sending Jesus – that we would not perish but have eternal life − It tells us how we can receive His life – whosoever believes in Him The Bible tells us that God is love and that Jesus is God in the flesh − God cared so much about making His love for us known that He couldn’t entrust such a personal message with anyone else… − So Jesus came – God in the flesh – and personally delivered the message of God’s love − Today we see the story of When Love Comes To Town − And Love Changed Everything We pick up the story in John 12:12… and we will notice five groups of people that were present on this historic day − The Multitudes − The Disciples − The People Who Witnessed The Resurrection of Lazarus − The Pharisees − The Greeks − Each had their own response to God’s revelation of love John 12:12–21 (NKJV) The Triumphal Entry 12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: When Love Comes To Town – John 12:12-21 © 2011 Holland Davis __________________________________________________ When Love Comes To Town “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ The King of Israel!” 14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.” 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. 17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!” 20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” THE FIRST GROUP: The Multitudes − I love John’s version of the Triumphal Entry of Jesus because he captures the excitement of the moment. − Jerusalem was packed with people from all over Judea who were there to celebrate Passover − They hear that Jesus is coming to town and the buzz begins − They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him crying out − Hosanna, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel − Like a FLASH MOB Scholars tell us that palm branches were used to show respect to a war hero or a victorious King When Love Comes To Town – John 12:12-21 © 2011 Holland Davis __________________________________________________ When Love Comes To Town − The Word “Hosanna” is a transliteration of the Hebrew word Hosi-a-na and it comes from Psalm 118:25 which was one of the Hallel Psalms (Psalms 113-118) − In the Hebrew Hosi-a-na is a cry for help translated “Help Now” − In the Greek it means “Save Now” − The Hallel Psalms were often recited in preparation for Passover − The people would stand around the altar of burnt offering and read the Hallel Psalms (Psalm 113-118) and as they read the Hallel Psalms they would waive Palm branches around the altar of burnt offering − While they did this, they would shout Hosanna as a shout of Jubilation – a cry for help, crying out to the Messiah – HELP US NOW Now I want you to catch what’s happening − The crowd meets Jesus on his way into the city waiving palm branches − The crowd is literally surrounding him… in front of him, beside him, behind him − The time is Passover − Jesus is entering Jerusalem knowing that He was to be the Lamb of God that would be offered on the altar of burnt offering for the sins of the world. − While the crowd is surrounding Him – the sacrificial Lamb of God − They waive their palm branches and cry out − Hosanna – Messiah Help Us, Save Us − Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel − What a scene, you would have thought that the crowd was all over Jesus… a revival was breaking out They were more interested in the idea of Jesus – not Jesus Himself − The Jews were expecting a conquering King who would overthrow the Roman Empire and liberate Israel from oppression − They thought Messiah had come to free God’s people − But the same voices that cried out HAIL HIM, HAIL HIM would one week later cry out NAIL HIM, NAIL HIM. − Why? Because He didn’t do what they expected Him to do − He didn’t come the way they expected Him to come − Love disappointed them Luke records this… Luke 19:41–44 (NKJV) When Love Comes To Town – John 12:12-21 © 2011 Holland Davis __________________________________________________ When Love Comes To Town 41 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” POINT: They liked the idea of Jesus, but they weren’t really interested in Jesus Himself − ABC News reported that 83% of the United States claims to be Christian − Of all Christians – 37% say that they’ve been born again − That means 63% of all the people who claim to be Christians have never had a face to face encounter with Jesus Christ − They like the idea of Jesus, but they don’t really want Jesus Himself THE SECOND GROUP: The Disciples − The disciples, you gotta love them, but they weren’t very bright − They lived with Jesus for three years − It says… He disciples did not understand what was going on at first − They didn’t get it until Jesus was glorified – meaning until after the resurrection − We are told that Jesus appeared to two of the disciples on the Road to Emmaus − Jesus is frustrated with them Luke 24:25–32 (NKJV) 25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. 28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them. 30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. When Love Comes To Town – John 12:12-21 © 2011 Holland Davis __________________________________________________ When Love Comes To Town 32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” − That is one Bible Study I wish could have been recorded POINT: The reason why Jesus was frustrated was because they spent a lot of time with Jesus, but they really didn’t know Jesus ILLUSTRATION: THE THIRD GROUP: The People Who Witnessed the Resurrection of Lazarus − These people loved the excitement of being around Jesus − Hey man, Jesus is appearing in Jerusalem next week… I wonder what He’s going to do there? − I heard He healed this guy who was crippled from birth − I heard He healed blind Bart − Did you hear about Lazarus… dude, back from the dead − He came out like a mummy − Hey honey, can you check out Facebook and see what Jesus’ touring schedule is – let’s follow him − John says, they only followed Jesus because He had done this sign… raising Lazarus from the dead Jesus said… Matthew 16:4 (NKJV) 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” What was the sign of the prophet Jonah? − Jonah was in the belly of a whale for three days − After three days the whale threw Him up on a beach − Some scholars believe Jonah was alive in the belly of the whale − I think they are dumb – you try surviving in the belly of a whale, underwater, no oxygen, stomach acids all around you, digested fish − Jonah was dead − When the whale threw Jonah up on the beach, God raised Jonah from the dead When Love Comes To Town – John 12:12-21 © 2011 Holland Davis __________________________________________________ When Love Comes To Town − Jesus was referring to resurrection – but not the resurrection of Lazarus, but His own resurrection POINT: They wanted what Jesus could do for them, but they really didn’t want Jesus Himself − When the show

  • PSCI 11 the Gospel According to U2 Winter Study 2008
PSCI 11 The Gospel According to U2 Winter Study 2008 Professor Darel E. Paul PSCI 11 Stetson g19 Griffin 6 597-2327 TWR 10am-noon [email protected] Office Hrs.: Mondays 2:00pm - 4:00pm and by appointment Course Description It has been said that U2 is the "world's greatest rock band" – but is it also (unknown to most) the world's greatest – and most unusual – Christian rock band? This course explores the theology, spirituality and politics of U2 expressed through the group's songs, stage performances and human right campaigns. We will travel from the band's origins in the Shalom Christian Fellowship in Dublin to their overtly Christian second album October (1981); the culmination of their superstardom in Joshua Tree (1987); through their techno and ultra-ironic 1990s marked by Zoo-TV, PopMart and Bono's "mock the devil" phase as Mr. MacPhisto; and a return to their roots in All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (2004). Along the way, we will listen to a lot of U2, watch some videos and tour footage – but it's not all fun and games. We will also read serious theological and philosophical tracts on U2 lyrics and explore the band's complicated interweaving of faith, sexuality, grace, fame, doubt, justice, and the meaning of America in a way which makes them a surprisingly popular and poignant spiritual voice in our superficial and materialistic age. We will also delve into the group's human rights and social justice work, from Band Aid in the ‘80s to (Product)RED today, and in particular explore Bono's Christian social justice moorings.

B.B. King: “I’m Just A Blues Singer” …and so much more! Come take a virtual trip through the life and times of this world-class bluesman. B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center Education Curriculum 1 A Lifetime Collector The contents of this presentation, drawn from multiple sources, simulate a visit to the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, which opened in 2008 in B.B. King’s “hometown” of Indianola, Mississippi. Almost all of the items exhibited in the museum were shipped to Indianola from B. B. King’s Las Vegas home. By sharing these artifacts with museum visitors, he has given us a glimpse of himself and what it’s like to be the King of the Blues. 2 Tennessee Birthplace Arkansas Riley B. King was born on Wednesday, September 16, 1925, Mississippi in a cabin on the bank of Bear Creek in the tiny town of Berclair, Mississippi. This map shows other places he lived during his childhood and into his Louisiana teens: Kilmichael, Lexington, Indianola, and Memphis. 3 Sharecropper’s Home Riley’s parents, Albert and Nora Ella King, were sharecroppers who lived in a simple home southeast of Berclaire along Bear Creek. After his parents separated when he was four, King lived in Kilmichael and Lexington before moving as a teen to Indianola, which he refers to as his hometown. 4 Sharecropper’s Life Growing cotton began by breaking up the ground with hand tools like this hoe. Workers stooped over the cotton plants to fill their bags, which they dragged along behind them.

The Band Believes Beautiful Day (from the album All That You Can’t Leave Behind, 2000) The heart is a bloom Shoots up through the stony ground There's no room No space to rent in this town You're out of luck And the reason that you had to care The traffic is stuck And you're not moving anywhere You thought you'd found a friend To take you out of this place Someone you could lend a hand In return for grace It's a beautiful day Sky falls, you feel like It's a beautiful day Don't let it get away You're on the road But you've got no destination You're in the mud In the maze of her imagination You love this town Even if that doesn't ring true You've been all over And it's been all over you It's a beautiful day Don't let it get away It's a beautiful day Touch me Take me to that other place Teach me I know I'm not a hopeless case See the world in green and blue See China right in front of you See the canyons broken by cloud See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out See the Bedouin fires at night See the oil fields at first light And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth After the flood all the colors came out 1 It was a beautiful day Don't let it get away Beautiful day Touch me Take me to that other place Reach me I know I'm not a hopeless case What you don't have you don't need it now What you don't know you can feel it somehow What you don't have you don't need it now Don't need it now Was a beautiful day 2 St Thomas Episcopal Church, New York, New York 3 Gloria (from the album October, 1981) I try to sing this song I...I try to stand up But I can't find my feet I try, I try to speak up But only in you I'm complete Gloria...in te domine Gloria...exultate Gloria...Gloria Oh Lord, loosen my lips I try to sing this song I...I try to get in But I can't find the door The door is open You're standing there You let me in Gloria...in te domine Gloria...exultate Oh Lord, if I had anything Anything at all I'd give it to you I'd give it to you (Listen for the tension and resolution) Gloria...Gloria..

  • Proper 7C Luke 8:26-39 Galatians 3:23-29 We Have Before Us Today In
Proper 7C Luke 8:26-39 Galatians 3:23-29 We have before us today in the Gospel of Luke the 2nd of four episodes where Jesus works wonders. A slave, then a dead man, next a prostitute, and now a madman. Luke piles one story on top of another showing how Jesus widens the circle of the people of God to include those who have been seen as contaminated and corrupting – the unclean. Two thousand years later, the mentally ill are the group we still fear, and shun. In our text Jesus pays a visit to the country of the Gerasenes, a Gentile place, on the far side of the Sea of Galilee. He comes here as he always does in Luke’s gospel, with the authority and power of God’s in-breaking reign. When Jesus is present, people and conditions are challenged, upset, transformed, and his visit to the Gerasenes makes quite an impact. 1 The meaning here is quite clear: There is no place beyond Jesus’ power to set free. Almost before he can get off the boat Jesus is met by a man described as demon possessed. Luke has placed this disturbed young man in an unclean town, in which Jewish people made their living by herding pigs. By Jewish law the pig is an unclean animal, but the town has found it profitable to raise them and sell to neighbors of other faiths who are pork eaters. The madman also is untouchable by religious law. The town, Gerasea, has decided that the young madman is good for nothing.

  • U2, N by Douglas K. Blount There Is but One Truly
RATTLE & FILM: U2, NIETZSCHE AND SALVATION IN THE BLUES by Douglas K. Blount There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy. —Albert Camus1 In this essay I will discuss two radically different answers to Camus’s fundamental question. Each of these answers, which find their motivation in what I shall call the blues of the human condition,2 maintains that life is indeed worth living. The first, put forward by the late nineteenth century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, infers from our wretchedness that God has died; surprisingly, though, Nietzsche finds in God’s death not an occasion for despair but rather an opportunity to make one’s life a thing beautiful by one’s own lights. Thus, in response to the blues, Nietzsche offers a requiem—that is, a dirge or funeral song—for God as a prelude to a reassessment of values. Such revaluing, he claims, makes possible a life worth living. The other answer to Camus’s question, put forward by a band of contemporary Irish theologians known as U2, sees our present darkness in the light of a kingdom yet to come, “a place that has to be believed to be seen.”3 On their view, the wretchedness of this life must be seen against the backdrop of God’s grace and the hope of new life which that grace provides. In response to the blues, then, U2 offers gospel. Moreover, since their most perspicuous 1“The Myth of Sisyphus” in The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays, trans.
