14 October AHEPA Taverna Evening - Flamingos 17 October AHEPA Installation & Grand Ball Welcome once again to all our readers. This will be our final issue before the AGM on 25 October Aitoloakarnania Taverna November 2nd. Over the last couple of years some of our focus has shifted towards 25-27 Oct U19 National Soccer Tournament in Napier reaching out to those members of our community that are not just interested in Soccer. I believe we have had some success in this area but we can still build on it. At our AGM 28 October Greek National Holiday (OXI) two years ago, as a trial, we altered the way in which the committee was structured so 2 November GOYANZ AGM - 4pm GOYANZ Clubrooms that we would have a series of sub-committees that sit below the main GOYANZ committee. I don’t think we got the balance quite right and it probably needs some 7-9 November SAE Conference, Wellington (venues and times TBA) changes - maybe this upcoming AGM may provide some new alternatives to the 9 November St. Nectarios Church nameday - Petone structure. I would like to highlight some of the achievements obtained by GOYANZ 16 November Wellington Xmas Parade (23 Nov, Reserve day) over the last couple of years: • Increased membership to 350 financial members 30 November St. Andrews Church nameday - Broadway Miramar • Introduced an annual GOYANZ picnic December GOYANZ Xmas Party (venue and date TBA) • Introduced an annual GOYANZ Xmas Party • GOYANZ is involved with the Wellington Xmas Parade annually 6 December Aitoloakarnania Kids Xmas Party & Taverna • We have developed a home base for GOYANZ at the Apollon Clubrooms 14 December Mytilenian Kids Xmas Party • We increased the air-time of the Youth radio show on Sunday afternoons to 90mins • We have attracted a host of new radio presenters 31 December Aitoloakarnania New Years Eve dance • We have developed a closer relationship with most of our fellow Greek Associations February GOYANZ Picnic (venues and times TBA) • Junior soccer player numbers are up to 180 8 February Aitoloakarnania Picnic • Olympic netball made a come back Along with the highlights I would also like to mention some of the difficulties we 21 February Mytilenian Picnic encountered: • A shortage of members/supporters to help organise & run our events. We need GOYANZ Clubrooms: 75 Adelaide Rd, Newtown more help in this area, even if you are not a committee member you can still get involved on the organisational side of things. EVANGELISIMOS CHURCH - Hania Street Raising the finances to accommodate our annual needs as an association. The • ST. ANDREWS CHURCH - 365 Broadway, Miramar development of the Clubrooms added extra financial pressure in this area. One thing I would like to now is that we have over 350 members plus their families but ST. NECTARIOS CHURCH - 23 Bay Street, Petone we may only see about half of them attending GOYANZ organised events during one ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST - 30 Rochester Street, Palmerston North calendar year. Why is that ? How can we increase the number of those participating ? Maybe we should run a survey asking our members these types of questions? Metropolitan Joseph: 3 Hania St, ph 8016385 The AGM plus Elections is scheduled for 2nd November 2003 - start time 4pm and Office Hours for the Priest: Father George Serras Monday to Friday the location The Clubrooms at 75 Adelaide Road, Newtown. A Momentous Event in Wellington Sunday the 21st of September Sunday the 21st of September shall be a day that many Greeks in Wellington will not forget, as this is a day that His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph of New Zealand and Exarch of Korea and Japan was enthroned. As many of us know ο Σεβασµιοτατος ∆ιονυσιος has been the ∆εσποτη for the Greeks in NZ for a long time for about 33 years, consequently he has been the only ∆εσποτη most of us have known. ∆εσποτη ∆ιονυσιος has been present at many weddings and christenings and other fundamental moments not only in the Greek Community of Wellington but also in other cities within NZ and abroad. He has Representatives of various Orthodox Churches gathered as part of the helped the Greeks in New Zealand to keep their religion alive and enthronement. His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph is second from the right. preserve contact with the church. Also gathered were priests from the Rumanian and Antiochia patriarchates. However as change is inevitable a change has taken place within the Greek Church. A new Μητροπολιτη has been assigned. The new Μητροπολιτης, Σεβ. Νεας Ζηλανδιας και Εξαρχος Κορεας και Ιαπωνιας Ιωσηφ was sent to NZ and is the 2nd Μητροπολιτη who was enthroned here in NZ. Our new Spiritual Father is from Crete but his service to the Greek Orthodox church stretches out to many areas in Greece such as Λευκαδα and Ιθακη, but also in the diaspora and in specific Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. To honour this significant liturgy many Greeks came from near and far to witness this account. There were representatives from Greece and Australia and also people within Wellington who wanted to honour and show their respect to Μητροπολιτη Ιωσηφ, even the media were there. Before the enthronement of Σεβ. Ιωσηφ, the church service was unique and momentous as several priests, (representatives of the various branches of our Orthodox religion) took part. This added to the inclusive nature of the event where everyone was welcome without any segregation. The following ceremony that took place at His Excellency Ambassador to Greece, Christos Karapanos makes a speech to Ευαγγελιστρια was very official displaying a grand nature. There welcome the new metropolitan. were many priests that came from Australia and Greece to assist in such a special occasion. It must be noted at this point that Αρχιµανδριτη Μυρων played an integral part. This spiritual figure had come to Wellington prior to the event in order to make the necessary preparations; he arrived to New Zealand to enthrone our new Μητροπολιτη. Μητροπολιτη Ιωσηφ gave a beautiful speech both in English and Greek in which he promised to try to live up to our standards and expectations and assist us in our battle to accomplish our goals for our Greek Community. It was interesting to see that his support was also reflected through a symbolic gesture where our Μητροπολιτη presented a silver medal to the President of the Greek Community, Mrs Stella Bares. In addition the Wellington church Ευαγγελισµος was officially announced as The Μητροπολη (The Cathedral). At the end of the service all members of the parish received a blessing and a copy of the eikona of Παναγια Η Παντανασσα, a miracle working holy icon from the Αγιον Ορος. The Greek Committee held a reception at the Παρθενων hall next President of the Greek Community, Stella Bares, is presented with a silver door where people could get to know their new Μητροπολιτη ’απο medal from Metropolitan Joseph. κοντα’. Σεβ. Μητροπολιτης Ιωσηφ is accompanied by a group of religious officials who are here to help him accomplish his goals. One of the things that have been made clear by Μητροπολιτη Ιωσηφ much as he can. We wish the best to the new Μητροπολιτη and look is that he hopes to work with the neolaia and help the youth as forward to what he brings to the Greek Orthodox Church of Wellington.

ATHENS 2004 OLYMPIC NEWS

Olympics: On your marks, get set 15.08.2003 Formal invitations to compete in next year’s Athens Olympics were sent out yesterday to a record 201 nations, including war-torn Afghanistan, Iraq and East Timor, as the one- year countdown to the Games began. The tiny South Pacific country of Kiribati was the fourth new name on the list as Olympic invitations for the first time numbered more than 200. “All countries of the world will be represented. It is a very symbolic day,” International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said at a ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland. “It is very dear to our hearts that we will have Afghan athletes, Iraqi athletes, we will have athletes from East Timor, three countries that were affected by war in the last years,” Rogge said. National committees have until December 13 to confirm their participation. Greece celebrated the 366-day countdown - 2004 is a leap year - with banner headlines proclaiming: “One year to go before the big celebration.” 2004 targets the unemployed Kathimerini - 21 Sept 03 The Athens 2004 organizing committee yesterday said it would hire nearly 6,000 unemployed people on short-term contracts to cover personnel needs during next August’s Games, in a program co-financed by the Labor Ministry and the European Union. “The organizing committee’s salaried staff currently stands at 1,800 people,” Athens 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki told a press conference. “For the Games to take place, some 6,000 more people will have to be employed... for periods ranging from three to 11 months.” Athens 2004 officials are looking for 5,785 senior high school leavers or university graduates aged 18-40 who are registered as jobless with the state employment agency. The first hirings, on 11-month contracts, will be effective from November, while the organizing committee is offering monthly salaries ranging from 1,000-1,310 euros. The organizing committee also plans to use the services of 60,000 volunteer workers during the Games. 2004 officials say they have received over 110,000 applications so far. Opposition New Democracy immediately attacked yesterday’s announcement as a government vote-grubbing maneuver ahead of national elections due by May. Also yesterday, Angelopoulos-Daskalaki briefed Communist Party leader Aleka Papariga on the course of Greece’s preparations for next August’s Games. “We want to underline, and this is mainly addressed to the government, our great concern and anxiety regarding the high cost of the Games, which has vastly exceeded the budget,” Papariga told journalists after the meeting. “We fear the financial burden will be shifted onto workers’ shoulders after 2004.”

Greek School Olympic Games Yiorti Greek School, Hania St, 17 August 2003 Like many children all over the world, the pupils of Greek school have been learning about the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. This year the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad organised an international drawing competition with the theme ‘2004 Olympic Games’. The children of the Wellington and Petone Greek Schools also participated, and on Sunday 17 August their works were exhibited at the Greek School Hall on Hania St. This gave the proud artists the opportunity to show their even prouder parents, grandparents and other family members and friends their masterpieces.

A small event with the same theme as the exhibition was planned for the same day, and all children took part in it. Some recited poems and facts about the Olympic Games and others took part in a sketch representing the beginning of the Games in Ancient Olympia, complete Effie Christoforou, Konstandina Kosmadakis and teacher Christina Skiada, with the lighting of the Olympic Torch. The rest of the children who organised the event proceeded into the hall, some of them cheerfully waving small flags and others holding a big Olympic flag with great pride. At the end of the event first, second and third prizes were given out, but all children received a commemorative prize for their participation. The winners were: 1st Prize Elitsa Kappatos - Niki Botes (ages 12-16), Melpo Toulis (8-12), 2nd Prize Alexia Koullapis (12-16), Paraskevas Botes - Jeremy Houtas - Angelo Pantelakis (8-12), 3rd Prize Konstandina Kosmadakis (12-16), Demetri Viatos - Demetri Camberis - Cassandra Botros (8-12).

According to a recent edition of the Athens 2004 Olympic News, some of the core values of next year’s games are “participation, celebration and heritage”, and the Greek school children were definitely taught the importance of all those principles on that special day. By taking part in this exhibition and celebration they also learned about the importance of participation and effort no matter what the end result, not to mention the worldwide impact of their Greek heritage. AMARTIA BARAKI NIGHT A few weekends ago an evening of sin took place at the GOYANZ clubrooms… Don’t jump to any conclusions though; all this refers to is the ‘Amartia’ Baraki night, which took place on Saturday 9 August. Those who attended would definitely assure you that all they had was good Greek fun and that the only “amartia” committed was by those who did not show up!

The turnout was good but admittedly could have been even better, as is often the case with Greek events. Unlike previous baraki nights, the entertainment was not provided by a professional DJ, but that certainly didn’t stop the crowd from building kefi while listening and dancing to old and new Greek hits. This, combined with the fact that there was plenty of food and drink available, meant that the evening lacked nothing in comparison to the larger scale nights a good crowd turned up for an evening of dance and music. that have taken place at city venues in the past.

So for those who may still think that the clubrooms are just for sports people, here’s a reminder that they are in fact for everyone to enjoy - as was proven by the first official baraki night there! The organisers put a lot of effort into this GOYANZ evening, and we are looking forward to the next one. See you all there!

CYPRUS COMMUNITY DANCE!! On Saturday the 30th of August the Cypriots proved that they also know how to have an AMAZING xoro and can dance the night away. For those of you that took part in this event will know very well that there was a good turn out, as we were informed, tickets were sold out a couple of weeks in advance (there was only some space left on the mezzanine floor).

Like all other Greek dances the food was great and the atmosphere was buzzing with Greek music, which could be heard in the streets as we approached the Cypriot Hall. It must be noted that this music was not just a random selection of songs from CDs, which entertain us at parties at home. On the contrary the Cypriots decided to party in style and bring in a band from Australia that got young and old dancing to the great voices and music the band chose to perform. Songs were both traditional and modern to cater to the needs of all generations, as it was good to see that many of the youth in the Greek Wellington Community did support this occasion. Well done to the Cyprus Community Committee and we hope me to kalo to see more of these events in the future!
