  • Review of the Year 2016-2017
Review of the Year 2016 of the Year Review - 2017 AN ACADEMY FOR 12-18 YEAR OLDS Guest of Honour Mrs Lucy Alexander On April 27th 2016, my beautiful 17-year-old son Felix took his own life after years of bullying. Since losing him I have felt compelled to give him the voice he did not feel he had in life to try to make things better for other young people like him. I wrote an open letter to my local paper in October last year appealing for kindness amongst our young people and this seems to have struck a chord with so many others who have been, or are at present struggling. In February this year alongside BBC Hereford and Worcester and Pershore High School we launched Felix’s Campaign of Kindness, which I have taken to schools in Worcestershire. I am talking to young people about what they can do to combat unkind behaviour and teachers to urge them to make the mental health of students a priority. I am also an ambassador for the children's mental health charity Place2Be that supports children, their families and teachers in schools, and through early intervention helps prevent future problems. Pershore High has been of enormous support to my family and me during what has been the most difficult of years and I know that enduring friendships have been formed from the saddest of circumstances. Message from the Headteacher I must confess that the closing weeks of this academic year will be an emotional time for me. They will mark the end of a fantastic 21 years for me personally, during which I hope to have made a difference to our young people and the local community of Pershore.

  • The History of Wood Norton
The History of 1939 Wood Norton 1 A Brief History Wood Norton Hall is a Grade II listed Victorian stately home near Evesham, Worcestershire. It was the last home in England of Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who claimed the throne of France. Used by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) during World War II as a station for listening to enemy radio broadcasts and an emergency broadcasting centre, it became the accommodation for the BBC's engineering training college that grew up in its grounds. The BBC retained purpose-built facilities in the grounds for technical training after selling the Hall, which became a hotel. 1872 – 1912 The site of a dwelling since medieval times, the exiled French Duc d’Aumale purchased the estate as a hunting lodge. The Duke, until his death in 1879, had shown considerable interest in the Evesham agricultural society. The Duke was keen on shooting and when at Wood Norton he hunted. He established a pack of harriers, these hunted in the area and on the Cotswolds. In 1879 the estate with its claim to the throne of France went to the Duke's great nephew, Louise- Phillippe-Robert, Duc d'Orleans who converted the hunting lodge into the hall that stands today. The Duc d'Orleans came to live at Wood Norton in 1898, and was joined by his wife (the former Princess Marie-Dorothee of Austria), his sister (Princess Louise-Francoise) and other members of his family. He used his residence as a mini Palace with liveried footmen and many servants. He was a keen sportsman at one time being president of the Evesham golf club.

Women, Work, and the BBC: How Wartime Restrictions and Recruitment Woes Reshaped the Corporation, 1939-45 Kathryn R Terkanian Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of Bournemouth University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2018 COPYRIGHT STATEMENT This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with its author and due acknowledgement must always be made of the use of any material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. 2 | P a g e Abstract Women, Work, and the BBC: How Wartime Restrictions and Recruitment Woes Reshaped the Corporation, 1939-45 Kathryn R Terkanian During the Second World War, the BBC developed and grew as an organisation. Suddenly at the centre of communications between a country and its people, and Britain and the world, the BBC concentrated all its efforts into its radio programme streams through its domestic services, Overseas Services Division, and European Services Division. Most research on the British home front references the centrality of BBC radio in the everyday life of the nation. However, apart from a few exceptional studies there has been limited exploration of the BBC as an organisation during the critical war years, and no specific research has been conducted on the role that women played in sustaining the organisation. Women’s working lives during the war have been explored, but only recently has attention been paid to women in white-collar workplaces like the BBC. Prior to the war the BBC, like many similar British organisations, was structurally gendered, although in some areas gender boundaries were more fluid.
