The Environmental Readings course has three parts. Throughout, the influence of literature on design and planning theory is explored. The first part focuses on the three most important theorists in environmental planning and landscape architecture: Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., Charles Eliot, and Ian McHarg. An arbitrary political line may divide the north from the south, but there is no such line in nature and there can be none socially” ‘Yeoman’, 1852 Frederick Law Olmsted scrawled this fleeting thought into his journal as he concluded his year-long sojourn through the Southern States preceding the Civil War. His political skills sharpened, Olmsted’s commentary on natural and social processes in this journal would go on to embody the values expressed through his design interventions. Less than a year after returning from the journey, he inauspiciously won the commission to design Central Park and irrevocably altered the worlds of planning and Landscape Architecture through his fascination with nature, public health, and social interactions. Nearly a century later, Shlomo Aronson would encounter similar political strife in the Middle East. Immersed in conflict and confronted with a nation rapidly shifting from an agrarian economy to an urbanized and technological powerhouse, Aronson found himself caught between the past and the future and, at times, unable to reconcile the tension. Like Olmsted, Aronson’s design philosophy was acutely attuned to the pressing issues of his era and his ardent work helped establish Landscape Architecture as a profession in Israel. Their experiences as young men forged their design values, and the various convergent and divergent threads between them help elucidate how and why they became iconic figures in the brief history of Landscape Architecture. The century separating their lives is transcended by their shared concerns of re-introducing urbanites to nature, and their belief that engaging public spaces have the ability to narrow the gap between social classes. Regenerative and biocentric designs fostering urban ecological habitats including food webs that provide ecosystem services for people and wildlife increasingly are being sought. However, the intentional design of urban landscapes for food webs remains in an early stage with few precedents and many challenges. In this paper, we explore the potential to design (for) urban food webs through collaborations between designers and ecologists. We start by examining the ecology and management of Jamaica Bay in New York City as a case study of an anthropogenic landscape where ecosystems are degraded and the integrity of extant food webs are intertwined with human agency.     DESIGN WITH NATURE NOW CONTRIBUTION COVER PAGE Title: Ian Lennox McHarg, Scotland and the Emergence of Green Consciousness Author: Brian Mark Evans Professor of Urbanism and Landscape Mackintosh School of Architecture The Glasgow School of Art ABSTRACT This essay seeks to place Ian Lennox McHarg and Design With Nature in contemporary and Scottish contexts. It reflects on the green consciousness of Scottish traditions and sets McHarg alongside his fellow internationally renowned and environmentally conscious Scots: John Muir and Patrick Geddes. It is suggested that the migration of dispossessed highlanders to Glasgow brought this culture to the city and this has, in turn, informed the emergence of bio-regionalism and green consciousness in Scotland. McHarg’s contribution to the early days of this movement is noted as is the significance of his work in informing the school of landscape thought (in the UK and Scotland in particular) that is rooted in regionalism, terrain, ecology and nature. Finally the text refers to the work in Scotland of graduates from McHarg’s landscape programs at the University of Pennsylvania and concludes that they in turn refreshed the Design With Nature methodology and re-invigorated subsequent generations of landscape planners and landscape architects in Scotland. McHarg was in the thick of planning for what would F become the world’s fi rst Earth Day the following spring. As chair of Penn’s Department of Landscape Archi- tecture and Regional Planning, he had committed his faculty and students to participate in what had been conceived as a national teach-in. In his 1996 auto- biography, A Quest for Life, McHarg re- called that his specifi c task was to iden- tify and invite potential speakers for the Philadelphia event. Among those who answered the call were Ralph Nader, then best known for his 1965 exposé of the auto industry, Unsafe at Any Speed; US Senator Edmund Muskie; Nobel prize-winning biochemist George Wald; poet Allen Ginsberg; and the cast of the era’s iconic Broadway musical, Hair, which, in addition to “Age of Aquarius,” featured a song called “Air” that begins: Welcome!     (Re)Defining a Literary Genre: How Italo Calvino’s Postmodern (Hyper)Novels became “Philosophical Allegories” in the USSR Ilaria Sicari Ca’ Foscari University of Venice In the Soviet era the institution of literary criticism occupied a prominent place within the complex state management of cultural production. Criticism recognized or denied the artistic value of all literary production, subjecting it to censure or ideological homologation. Thus, criticism itself was an active agent in the creation of the meaning of literary works, legitimizing through an exercise of power their aesthetic value and playing a determinant role in shaping their reception by the Soviet reader.1 The strategies used to intervene in defense of Soviet art were essentially of two kinds: first, disparaging or promoting authors; and, second, molding the content of the works according to the dictates of Socialist Realism. Both functions were exercised through reviews in the official press and critical introductions in the books edited by state publishers.2 1 Cf. LALH education director Jane Roy Brown writes about the issues involved in the construction of another museum addition, the Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing, designed by Beyer Blinder Belle for Reynolda House Museum of American Art. She discusses the architects’ efforts to minimize the impact of the building on the historic landscape of Reynolda and how an LALH book, A World of Her Own Making, provided guidance in the process.

Scott Brown discusses her family background and growing up in South Africa; her education at the University of Witwatersrand, the Architectural Association, London, a summer school in Venice, sponsored by Congres Internationale d'Architecture Moderne, and the University of Pennsylvania, recalling some of her teachers (including Arthur Korn and Louis Kahn); her first husband, Robert Scott Brown, and their travels throughout Europe and experiences in Pennsylvania; her teaching philosophy and experiences at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Harvard, UCLA, and Berkeley; the architecture program at Penn from her perspective as a student and as a member of the faculty; meeting Robert Venturi, their work together, the firm and the difficulties encountered in the 1970s and 1980s, some of their projects such as the National Gallery, London, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and planning work; publications such as "Complexity and Contradiction," "Urban concepts," "Worm's Eye View," and "Learning from Las Vegas;" postmodern architecture; critics; and her experiences as a woman in the field.
